Two dingers
Dillon Dingler
Jac Caglianone
Matt Olson
Homers five and six for Jac Caglianone, a very popular breakout pick for this year who has not come through. He hits the ball very, very hard.
→ 110.9 EV90 (108.9 on fly balls)
And that keeps his xwOBA’s decent:
But the launch angle histogram is the problem
Just 24% of his batted balls have been fly balls. That’s low, but it’s not insanely low. The EVs turn a lot of line drives into barrels for him, but those aren’t barrels that don’t ever really have a chance to get out of the yard. His barrel analysis:
That’s a very low 30% HR/Brl. His average barrel launch angle is one of the lowest in the game:
Junior Caminero 21
Giancarlo Stanton 22
Vlad Guerrero Jr. 22
Dominic Canzone 22
Jac Caglianone 22
Some great news here, though:
I went and added a rolling launch angle plot to the Hitter Profile pages on the main Tableau.
We’ll see if it lasts, but the two dingers and recently higher launch angles might be a sign that he’s figuring out how to lift the ball in the Majors, which he desperately needs to figure out given the kind of power he has in the bat.
Dillon Dingler is a very good hitter. 16 bombs now with an .857 OPS.
Matt Olson went cold for a bit there, but he’s back on it.
As we get more and more into the data revolution and more and more people get wise to the numbers and start using AI to code stuff and whatnot, people are more and more thinking that we can actually predict what will happen in baseball games. You see this with the betting guys all the time, or at least the bad ones. There’s not a proper appreciation for daily and weekly randomness in their thought processes.
