Four big SP outings yesterday:
→ Crochet: 7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 12 K, 2 BB
→ Paddack: 8 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 10 K, 1 BB
→ Bradley: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 10 K, 2 BB
And then getting pretty close to that:
→ Bubic: IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 9 K, 2 BB
→ Williams: 6.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 6 K, 2 BB
→ Morton: 6.2 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 7 K, 1 BB
Taj Bradley was a big surprise there. That was his first time over seven strikeouts this year, and it boosted his season K% from 20.5% to 22.0%. The fastball velo was (back) up:
Good signs. Remember, this was a guy with a 26.5% K% last year on a 13.9% SwStr%. It was tough to figure out why the K% had declined so much. He’s still throwing a 96mph fastball and a 91mph splitter. It’s just that neither pitch has worked as well.
He didn’t throw the splitter much yesterday; he was doing very well with the four-seamer and cutter, and he went up a bit on the curveball usage. Good stuff to see Bradley have a big outing again. That was something he was capable of in the past, the problem being that it would be mixed in with bad outings because of his home run problem.
Gavin Williams’ week went about as expected. He had a bad outing against the Dodgers, but then a nice one against the Angels. Let’s just look at this season:
25.7% K%, 13.2% BB%, 13.7% SwStr%, 39.1% Ball%, 3.77 JA ERA, 2.05 WHIP+
Plenty of strikeouts, but way too many walks. He walked just two yesterday, so that was a little bit of improvement. Even in his much better month of May, the walk rate was awful at 16%. It’s tough to handle that. That ball rate has been pretty steady at 39% all year. Your most similar pitchers to Williams by this Ball% and SwStr% combination:
Good to see Freddy Peralta there, but the other names show you the inconsistencies that come with throwing a lot of balls.
The Ryan Yarbrough thing kept going.
6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 0 BB
Since joining the rotation:
5 GS, 24.7% K%, 5.2% BB%, 2.98 JA ERA, 1.32 WHIP+
We looked at him pretty closely last time. This had to be the most encouraging start to date since it was against the Dodgers. The pitch mix data since he got into the rotation:
Not very good numbers on the cutter, but the changeup and sweeper have been good. So he’s looking like one of those classic cases of a guy who can get by as long as the fastball isn’t getting smashed. So far he’s held it together with the cutter with a .417 SLG on a .377 xwOBA. But I can’t help but think there will be bad starts ahead. And his long history of being mediocre at best makes me not really want to buy in on this.
Hayden Birdsong since getting into the rotation:
25% K%, 3.3% BB%, 21.7% K-BB%, 13.3% SwStr%, 35.9% Ball%, 2.75 JA ERA, 1.36 WHIP+
Great stuff. I did not expect that low of a walk rate. It’s not going to stay that low with the 35.9% Ball%, but that ball rate would suggest an 8% or so BB% - which would be fine as long as the strikeouts stay at least in the mid-20% range.
His fastball has not been good on 98 pitches (9.2% SwStr%, 45% Strike%), so that would also be something to worry about. I’m not bought into Birdsong yet, but at least the early results have been positive.
And there went the Kevin Gausman crater. Although at least he struck out seven.
4.2 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 7 K, 2 BB
Ups and downs from the Gaus-daddy
Yainer Diaz has been solid of late, but pretty unlucky.
Since May 12th:
.215 average, .316 xBA
.283 wOBA, .408 xwOBA
Huge differences there. You should have some good weeks ahead for Yainer.
Jac Caglianone is getting called up for the Royals. He’s a first baseman on fantasy sites, and I guess he’ll play there and DH in some sort of split with Vinnie P and others. His time in the minors since getting drafted last year:
355 PA, .292/.358/.517, 20% K%, 8.7% BB%, 17 HR, 4 SB
In this recent stint in AAA:
54 PA, .319/.370/.723, 6 HR, 17% K%, 9% BB%
The advanced stuff (although at what point do we stop calling this “advanced”?):
79% Contact%, 55% Swing%, 110.5 EV90, 17.5 Brl%
Big, big power, and he didn’t have trouble lifting the ball (32% GB%) or hitting lefties (.569 SLG). He checked all of the minor league boxes.
But, of course, there is likely to be an adjustment period. We just saw it with Nick Kurtz, so it’s fresh in everybody’s mind.
Caglianone swings more than Kurtz (49% in AA, 55% in AAA, 50% overall). That is neither a good nor a bad thing in a vacuum. But he’s likely to whiff a good bit in the Majors, so you’d rather him not be taking too many strikes.
I’d say Cag should be rostered in most all leagues. That said, I think it’s fine to let someone spend the big resources on him. The most likely thing, I think, is that it takes him 100 or so PAs to really adjust. He could be pretty awful for a couple of months, and that would take you to late July or August. That would be tough to take in a redraft league. But you’re going to do what you’re going to do!
Cal Raleigh now leads the league in homers.
A dinger every 11 PAs - pretty incredible stuff. He’s been a key to winning fantasy baseball so far. It feels like he’s lapping the field at the catcher position. The K% is still high, but it’s improved down to 27.5%. And that will work, especially since you’re getting the high walk rate with it.
Brandon Lowe has a .323/.373/.677 slash line in his last 67 PAs. He’s one of just six hitters with at least six homers since May 15th. So he’s gotten going!
Max Muncy is also wicked hot. Since May 14th:
64 PA, .320/.422/.700, 11% K%, 15.6% BB%, 6 HR
That was quite a turnaround. If we look prior to 5/14:
150 PA, .190/.313/.286, 29% K%, 14% BB%, 1 HR
During this stretch, his zone contact rate is up to 85%. That’s a nice number, and it’s a huge improvement from Muncy. I don’t think he’s really an 11% K% guy, or anything close to it, but I’d say he’s tough to leave on waivers right now. The 3B position hasn’t been great this year. Muncy seems to have figured something out and is showing that he’s got plenty of gas left in the tank.
We have Bryan Reynolds leading the league in xwOBA since May 15th.
xwOBA Since May 15
Bryan Reynolds .486
Ben Rice .475
Josh Bell .475
Seiya Suzuki .462
Alejandro Kirk .461
Ryan O’Hearn .459
Ketel Marte .459
Will Benson .457
Max Muncy .456
Addison Barger .452
Michael Busch .452
Kyle Schwarber .452
It’s feeling like another big month of June from Reynolds. That list is a pretty interesting one. No Judge or Ohtani - and you don’t often see that over any sample size.
That’ll do it for the daily notes. I’ll do everything I can to get some slate preview stuff out. But I am off work this week, so I’ll have to do it in defiance of vacation. My version of a vacation would be doing even more baseball writing and stuff since I don’t have to spend time on the real job business. But I don’t think the wife and kids would appreciate that all that much. So there’s a balance to be struck here.
