Bad starts from Joe Ryan and Garrett Whitlock last night. Maybe there is a lesson to be learned there about the risk of throwing so many strikes. They both had good starts by the SwStr% and Strike%, but nothing else went well.

You can see below with Whitlock, he posted a great 14.1% SwStr%, a great 50% Strike%, and even a beautiful 56% GB%, but he gave up two homers and a bunch of hits and that turned into a bad outing in the box score.

Obviously, you’re starting Joe Ryan going forward, but I’m also going to keep going on Whitlock, nothing here to worry about, if you’re going to post a high SwStr% and a low Ball% at the same time - you’re going to be good over the full sample.

Andrew Abbott had another good outing, posting another quality start and giving up just one run and even going for eight strikeouts. The bad news

• 3 walks

• 39% Ball%

• 12.3% SwStr%

• 0% GB%

You don’t see too many starts without a single ground ball being generated, lol. I stand by my idea that this guy is going to have some really bad outings given his lack of whiffs (so far) and super high FB% (that’s probably here to stay), but he’s done enough to hang around in the fantasy discussion.

Disaster start from Taj Bradley in Arizona. That’s a tough offense to take down, but everything was really bad for him.

After a few starts of just sheer dominance, he reverted to a 7.3% SwStr% and a 39% Strike%, awful.

I’m still going to start him given the upside, but there might be some big-time inconsistency issues here with the rookie.

Gavin Williams had a much better start this time. Maybe he took advantage of the Royals, but he had a scoreless start with a beautiful 60% Strike%. The 12% SwStr% is average, but it was still up from last time.

The fastball velo was still down, but he threw a lot of strikes and very few balls - so that was good. I imagine he’ll stay in the rotation.
