Alright, so I want to do this a little bit differently and see how it goes. Usually, I would write some extra stuff at the top and then do the automated report from there.

Since most of my writing prompts would come from stuff in the notes, today I want to do my extra writing in between the different sections of the notes. So we’ll look at each little part and add some commentary where I think something of value can be added. Let me know what you think, I know many people read these, but I don’t get much feedback - and that would be appreciated!

Best start of the year for Blake Snell. All things considered, he’s been pretty good since his awful start to the year in those first five starts.

Last 7 stats:

We got another rookie debut last night as Reds lefty Andrew Abbott threw six scoreless to beat the Brewers. He racked up six strikeouts but also walked four. Here’s the pitch mix:

That’s a mediocre SwStr% but a healthy 49% Strike%. The four-seam usage was up there at 61%, and in the minors he had been around 50% with that, so this might have just been an “ease into things” approach. He doesn’t have an overwhelming fastball, so yeah the SwStr% will be low if he’s throwing it a ton.

I think you’ll see fewer fastballs and more whiffs next time, and the walk rate wasn’t really an issue in the minors (8.1%), so there’s good news there too.

The bad news is that he gives up a ton of fly balls, which is a really bad thing to do in Cincinnati. He’ll need a 25%+ K% and a sub-10% BB% to stay relevant in shallow fantasy leagues, but you’re happy with what you got last night and you’re probably starting him again next weekend against the Cardinals. We’ll keep a close eye on him like we are with the rest of this huge class of rookie SPs.

Johan Oviedo survived a tough start to the game against the Athletics and gritted through seven innings to get the win. He really fooled us early on with his elite start to the year, even the advanced metrics looked awesome - but now he’s below 20% with the K% and above 10% with the BB% - so he’s an easy avoid for now.

JP Sears had six strikeouts and a season-high five walks. I watched that Pirates/A’s game and man it was a mess. Worst played game I’ve seen in a long time, neither team deserved to win - but the Athletics walked 10 Pirates so they earned the loss more than the Pirates did, and I’m officially back on the Buccos bandwagon again #FirstPlaceBucs.

Aaron Nola has increased the velocity on his four-seamer the last two times out, and this time he racked up a bunch of whiffs on the pitch - taking advantage of the Tigers’ bad lineup.

He just has so many different pitch mixes to use, and he’s been mixing it up a bunch this year. Gotta love that guy, he’s just a start every time in any matchup - you can stomach the bad starts, I believe in you.

Brayan Bello is still trying different things. He’s thrown more four-seamers than sinkers three times in a row now, and this time the slider and changeup usage dropped. I really like his sinker, but apparently the Red Sox don’t, and he allowed a season-high eight fly balls yesterday.

It’s a good problem to have, having four different pitches and two solid fastball variations - but I think it’s going to be a bumpy ride for Bello in the near future.

Michael Kopech is really putting us through it this year. He’s been barreled up a ton all season long, and even now in these last few great starts he’s given up a ton of hard contact when they are hitting it.

His first 7 starts: 10.7% SwStr%, 44.3% Strike%, 40.2% Ball%, 12 HR, 22 Brls
His last 4 starts: 16.7% SwStr%, 51.3% Strike%, 35.4% Ball%, 3 HR, 6 Brls

It’s really hard to go above a 15% SwStr% and a 50% Strike%, only these names have done that this year:

I’m happy to take the hard contact along with that SwStr% and Strike% combo, but it’s not like we can actually trust Kopech to stay this way. Weird guy, but he’s a must-start for now.

Very good to see Trea Turner have a big game there, but I won’t really feel good about him being #back until he goes a few weeks with a sub-20% K% and a bunch of line drives. He’s not really a home run guy, so a double-dinger night doesn’t show us much about him being back to normal.

Luke Raley has now maintained a 20%+ Brl% over 151 PAs. He is striking out a ton and playing sparingly, but he’s an interesting DFS play or streamer hitter - the power seems to be for real.

I really think Seiya Suzuki is one of the better hitters in the league, and the numbers are going to come in bunches. He’s very skilled up there with the power and contact combination.

Jose Altuve is whiffing a bunch since his return from injury, and the Brett Baty thing has turned around in a hurry. He had his K% well below 20% for awhile but now it’s up to 25% and he’s struck out 36% of the time in his last 50 PAs.

Randy Arozarena has also slowed.

No minor league games get played on Mondays, so nothing to update there.
