I’m reading this book about Martin Luther while at the beach. I didn’t know a ton about the guy other than the basics before picking it up. But I’ve wanted to learn a lot more about the Reformation and protestantism, so I started with a big old biography on Luther. And it’s funny that when you learn something new, you can immediately become pompous about it. Almost looking down on people who don’t know what you know. And obviously that’s insane and stupid, so hopefully you realize it right away and knock it off.
I guess self-awareness is the first step in not becoming an unlikeable person. You can’t stop doing the unlikeable things until you realize you’re doing things that are unlikeable.
It’s very, very easy to start viewing yourself more highly than you ought. And we should all basically view ourselves as trash in need of redemption, so it’s a pretty low bar that you clear before you’re viewing yourself much too favorably. That has always been a struggle for me. Where is the line between being happy to be the person you are and being an arrogant d-bag?
But anyways, Martin Luther was a freaking hero. One of the most important figures in human history.
Ben Brown has been the primary focus of all things at MLB DW for the last ten days or so. The spotlight has been on him, and he has looked very nice under its light.
7 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 7 K, 1 BB, 16.3% SwStr%, 30.4%
I am going to make a decision as I write this about whether or not I should drop Will Warren for him on my home league team. So let’s take another look.
The main issue with Brown is his two-pitchedness. Let’s take a look at the numbers since May began. He’s thrown three pitches.
→ FF 59%
→ CU 36%
→ CH 5%
I would put a pie chart on the main dashboard for pitch mix stuff, except for one time in grad school, I had this Data Science professor who basically said that anybody who ever uses a pie chart is an unredeemable loser who should be imprisoned. That guy really hated pie charts. And it’s possible that he was wrong and dumb for having such a strong opinion, but to this day, I still don’t use pie charts. Playing it safe, you know.
That changeup usage came up to 10% yesterday, the highest of the season. That’s a positive development for sure, but 10% still isn’t quite significant. The pitch has an 18% SwStr% and a 50% Strike% since May 1st. So it’s been good.
The curveball has been untouchable as always:
→ 25.2% SwStr%
→ 48% Strike%
→ .227 xwOBA
It’s one of just five curveballs (250+ pitches) over a 20% SwStr%.
The thing might deserve its own classification. It doesn’t really look like a curveball when you see it. But whatever, it’s a fantastic pitch.
If I thought the guy had a good fastball, I’d have made up my mind on him already and added him for good everywhere I could. But the fastball is questionable. The good news is that he throws strikes with it (54% Strike%, 27% Ball%). The bad news is that it gets crushed quite a bit (.402 xwOBA, .443 SLG, 4 HR). Hitters can sit on that pitch, and that’s led to some really bad outings for Brown.
The velo on the four-seamer has been climbing:
He ramped it up on May 13th. But that hasn’t helped the results (53% Strike%, 27% Ball%, .476 xwOBA, .553 SLG on the last 237 pitches). More velo is objectionably a good thing, so you would think the results would improve if the velo stays up there, but the velo does not guarantee anything if you’re not locating or if you’re too predictable with when the heater will come.
Let’s zoom back out.
→ 21% K-BB%
→ 14% SwStr%
→ 33.5% Ball%
Look at me here, forsaking my own main rule. Five starts or more with a 20% K-BB% is auto-add, right!? Isn’t that what I said all the time? Am I over-complicating things here like a nincompoop?
He has a very shiny 2.85 JA ERA. And let’s not make my ERA indicator the standard. Let’s point out the strong 3.18 SIERA and 3.22 xFIP. The indicators love him, and his bad luck this year has been well established.
I think Brown is very good. He’ll get the Phillies next time if the Cubs stay on the normal schedule. But they don’t have an off-day here, so it’s possible they throw in a bullpen game or something to get people some rest.
So we have elite underlying numbers along with some changes in the profile, which make him even more enticing (the changeup usage and fastball velo coming up). I’m putting the MLB DW stamp on him.
Michael Soroka had a fantastic outing against the Rangers.
6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 7 K, 1 BB
This was the first time all year he had not allowed multiple earnies. Bad pitchers can put up good outings. But is Soroka a bad pitcher? That’s what I’ve been trying to figure out.
The Good
18.3% K-BB%
51% GB%
33% Ball%
.235 xBA
.285 xwOBA
20% HR/FB (bad luck)
The Bad
He has great command, and he keeps the ball on the ground. When we look for pitchers under 24% K%, under a 6% BB%, and above a 50% GB%, we get just Soroka and Drew Rasmussen. Make it a 48% GB% and you get Spencer Schwellenbach in there too. Not bad company. Not walking guys and generating ground balls is a good way to have success. You just wish you could get a few more strikeouts.
Soroka is a good target in deep leagues, I think. It’s not always going to be great, but he is very capable of strong outings.
Five walks from Hayden Birdsong yesterday ruined his outing. He looks pretty close to a league-average pitcher when you’re checking the numbers since he’s entered the rotation.
14.4% K-BB%, 12.6% SwStr%, 9.3% BB% - all very close to the league average. He did throw a season-high 93 pitches, so the Giants aren’t restricting him too much. I’d view him like a league average pitcher with some strikeout upside. You can stream him in good matchups, but there’s not going to be much safety with him. The fastball is mediocre, and the command has never been great.
It’s funny to see Kyle Hendricks on the velocity changes leaderboard going DOWN.
You can probably go to any large high school in your area and find a guy throwing harder than Kyle Hendricks.
Another dinger for Addison Barger! He hit his first MLB homer of the year on May 11th. Since then, he has hit .301/.363/.614 with seven homers. That’s tied for 9th-most in the league.
He is on top of our new favorite daily notes hitter leadboard.
So there you go, things continue to look good for the ultra-jacked Blue Jays lefty.
And now I have to go.
