Every morning in The Daily Notes, Jon breaks down the current goings on in the fantasy baseball world, and an automated daily report gets you up to date on key stats and trends. Become a paid subscriber at MLB Data Warehouse to get this unlocked in your inbox every morning!
It is all officially back. I spent 2.5 hours this morning getting all of the code updated so we can do all of this automation once again. So, so many “find 2025 and replace with 2026” commands sent. And a lot of you have seen that I’m back to blowing up your X timeline each morning with automated tweets that fire off after I push the button.
If you’re new here, this post will hit your inbox every morning, except for some Sundays. I reserve the right to miss Sundays. And I reserve the right to add a ton of commentary on top of the automation on days where I’m busy with other things. But I’m not busy with other things today! I took off the real job for these two days so I could get everything running somewhat smoothly again.
PAID SUBS - CHECK THE RESOURCE GLOSSARY. The dashboards are mostly back! And I’ve added links to various Google Sheets that might be helpful; they all update daily.
Paul Skenes kind of ruined my Opening Day. I had finally gotten everything under control. I had the projections and tools are running, I had my 150 DraftKings lineups locked in, and I completed the Substack live stream. It felt good to sit down and chill and try to slow my brain down. And then Brandon Lowe cracks a two-home run homer immediately and it was peak satisfaction. But the Mets ruined everything in the bottom of the first. But most of you don’t care about that, because I imagine there are very few Pirates fans reading this. Many of you are Paul Skenes owners in your fantasy leagues. And that sucks, I guess. You should have drafted better.
The Opening Day one-game victory laps are always something. They came from some very unexpected sources this year, too. Some seasoned fantasy baseball players were dropping brags about how they didn’t like Skenes this year or that they loved Wetherholt and McGonigle and whoever else. But why not, you know? If you’re going to react improperly, you might as well let it fly on Opening Day - the best day of the year.
The rookie hitters put on a show. Chase DeLauter went deep twice, JJ Wetherholt hit a super impressive homer, Carson Benge hit a homer and swiped a bag, Kevin McGongigle had four hits, and Sal Stewart had three hits. The immediate arrival. That will have those fantasy owners seeing stars, man. And check me out - I have both DeLauter and Benge on my home league team - ON THE BENCH! My team hit four homers and stole two bases; all of those homers and one of those steals were benched. Fantastic stuff.
They should all be speculatively owned in every league. The one guy that might have slipped through the cracks is DeLauter. I have an improved ownership report this year. I joined a free CBS league so I could manually download their ownerships. There are paid leagues over there, and I’ve heard that they are generally much more competitive leagues. And from what I’ve seen so far, that would seem to be true.
But as the season goes on, more and more of these free leagues get completely abandoned and the ownership starts looking really stupid. I was hoping I could find a way to download NFBC OC ADP or scrape it, but that doesn’t seem to be possible. If anybody has any ideas on that - please let me know. For now, I’m going to be using like 80% CBS.
So yeah, DeLauter is out there in more than half of CBS leagues.
If you listened to the prospect and dynasty stuff all winter with us, you already know the story. But if you didn’t - the story is pretty simple. The guy is an elite hitter (unproven in the Majors so far, obviously, but he has hit like a stud everywhere he’s ever played), but he’s one of the most ridiculously injury-prone players you’ll ever find. I’d pick him up now, but don’t be surprised at all when a muscle pull happens next week.
Two other dudes double-donged:
Dominic Canzone
Brandon Lowe
Canzone started his season off in a great matchup against the righty Tanner Bibee. We expect him to sit against lefties. He was the DH last night, because he really sucks at playing outfield. So we’ll see Rob Refsnyder in there at DH for him when the M’s face a lefty.
Isn’t that a curious thing? How can some Major League players be really bad at defense? You’d think you’d figure that crap out at some point in your 20,000 hours of playing baseball. In the outfield, it probably just comes down to how athletic you are and how well your eyes work. Oneil Cruz’s eyes don’t work very well.
We spend most of our time looking at SPs in these early week daily notes. We can’t learn anything about a hitter in just a handful of games. It takes at least three weeks to have a meaningful sample for hitters. But pitchers, we can learn a lot more quickly.
Here’s the YESTERDAYS SP DATA TABLE:
You can bookmark that here. It should be updating before 8am eastern daily.
It was the predictable huge day from THE MIZZ.
The White Sox didn’t offer much resistance, but it’s tough to do anything against this guy when he’s on his game. A 98.3mph fastball piled up a stupid 19 whiffs and a 31.1% SwStr%. I said during the offseason that secondaries matter, but they matter less so when your fastball is this ridiculous. Almost nobody else has a fastball like Misiorowski with the velo plus extension.
But he absolutely will run into some clunker starts. Don’t start thinking you have a runaway SP1 here. The 39% Ball% was not good yesterday, and he’s not always going to get away with that. But a banger start from Mis.
And I should interject a brag here, right? Because I took 7th place out of 47,562 entries into the $1 MINI-MAX on DraftKings yesterday.
That sounds a lot less impressive after I tell you it was one of my 150 lineups. But that’s how you win at DFS. You’ve gotta get the bankroll up, learn how to use projections and an optimizer, and INJECT as many lineups into these tournaments as they’ll allow. And that’s what I’m doing.
!! NOTE FOR PRO MEMBERS !!
It’s not saving your settings right now, I know that. I absolutely will be figuring that out eventually. Maybe today, maybe next week.
I’m thinking that I’m going to have to take it into its own app. Which might be better. A standalone app with dedicated resources and probably user logins to manage the load and save your settings. But don’t abandon me yet!
We want to spend more time on pitchers who are available in fantasy leagues in these early weeks. And Jose Soriano is one of those. There’s a case that be made that Soriano still has true breakout potential. Here’s what it looked like yesterday:
We’re looking for differences to facilitate breakouts. The difference here is a lower ball rate (37%). Still not a good one, but if he could live in the 35-37% range, that would help. The bigger difference is the slider being nearly 92mph. That’s up multiple ticks from last year, and two ticks on a slider is a big deal. It’s just a 7% usage pitch, though, so it can’t take him all that far.
More likely, this is just Soriano starting his year with one of the spikes on his inevitable plot of spikes and.. whatever the opposite of spikes are. Stalagmites and stalagtites. Soriano hit a TITE. Or maybe it was a MITE. Who cares!
Not a good start for the MLB DW breakout SP picks.
Rasmussen, Smith, Cavalli, and Liberatore all at the bottom of the list.
Just an 8% SwStr% from Cavalli, although you did like to see the 67% GB%. It wasn’t an easy matchup against the Cubs. If you were committed to Cavalli before yesterday, I wouldn’t be changing anything today. His fastball averaged 96.5mph, which is high, but it might even come up - because it was higher than that last year.
Matthew Liberatore, I think, just duped us in the spring. And I think Eno Sarris might be to blame. He talked about how Liberatore was leading the spring in Stuff+. But if we look at our favorite stuff model here, Pitch Profiler, his Stuff sucks.
His next two starts are scheduled to be against the Mets and the Nationals. I wouldn’t even consider starting him against the Mets.
Cade Cavalli, by the way, gets the Phillies next. So not an easy start for these guys.
Shane Smith threw just 54 pitches. He got trucked, not escaping the second. Same story with CAVALLI though, if you liked him before, don’t cut him now. He still has a good fastball and a good changeup, I think. Wait and see!
That will do it for my part of the notes. Below, we get rolling on the automated reports. Most of them are useless now, because most rely on having at least a couple weeks worth of data to be useful.
John Allen and I will be recording a waiver wire adds podcast each Friday, and I’ll be putting a quick written version of that (without all the detail) along with it. Be on the lookout for that.
And feel free to drop a comment if you have ideas on what I should cover or what I should add. There will be a lot more of the automated parts popping up after we’re into mid-April and can truly start looking at trends.
This one is free, and I think every Friday might remain free. But the vast majority of the daily notes this year will be behind the paywall. So get in here now for just $14.99 a month or $85 for the season. Or go the full way to get the daily projections, DFS, and betting stuff as an MLB DW Pro subscribe.
