Corbin Burnes experienced the healing power of the Road Rockies. And I hardly had any of Burnes in DFS last night while everybody else bought into it. He was the highest-owned pitcher on the slate. That was surprising to me. Burnes really has not looked good this year (prior to last night), so it was a question of which mattered more - his poor performance or the elite matchup. And the elite matchup won out.
6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 10 K, 3 BB, 20.4% SwStr%
He didn’t change anything, just threw his normal stuff, and the Rockies could do nothing with it.
It was a super weird start from MacKenzie Gore. The important stats look elite:
→ 21 whiffs
→ 20.6% SwStr%
→ 56.9% Strike%
→ 31.4% Ball%
→ 9 Strikeouts
→ 2 Walks
And yet he gave up 10 hits and lasted just 3.2 innings. The Orioles went foul-ball crazy on him. They fouled off 26 pitches. I thought that would be near the single-matchup high this year, but it’s not. The Nationals fouled off 40 balls on May 2nd against Hunter Greene.
Foul ball stuff is something I’ve never really given a close look to. I’ve wondered in the past if certain pitchers generate foul balls at a higher rate than others. It would make some sense that a foul ball is the result in between hard contact and a whiff, right? The hitter usually doesn’t want to hit a foul ball. It’s a mishit, which is a good outcome for the pitcher, but the pitch wasn’t quite so good to get a full out whiff.
Your ten highest foul ball rates allowed (fouls / pitches):
And the ten lowest:
So there’s a mixture of good and bad pitchers on both lists. My guess is that this stuff is pretty random. If we look at it by pitch type:
So four-seamers get fouled off the most. I wonder if velo matters!
So it seems to matter a bit. Four-seamers above 95mph get fouled off more than ones under 95.
But it’s Saturday morning, and I’m sitting here on the couch with my kids writing about foul ball rates. Who cares!
Shane Smith update after his decent start against the Cubs:
The K-BB% is still in the problem area, but the 14.2% SwStr%, 1.73 WHIP+, .608 OPS allowed, 46% GB%, and .303 xwOBA are good signs. He has an 18.8% K-BB% in May. The four-seamer and changeup are both pretty good. His command isn’t anything special, but he has pretty decent stuff and he’s worthy of a roster spot in plenty of leagues.
Tylor Megill has stopped being good. He’s given up four earned runs in three straight.
His first five starts:
→ 24.7 IP, 1.09 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 27.8% K%, 10.2% BB%, 0 HR
His last four starts:
→ 18.2 IP, 7.23 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, 30.6% K%, 12.9% BB%, 3 HR
The true Megill is between those two marks. I was calling him a sell-high during that run of five starts, so this shouldn’t be surprising. But the 30.6% K% over these last four starts is really nice, and it makes me think he can have plenty of very useful outings the rest of the way out. And that should turn into wins as well since he’s on a good team. But he does look like a WHIP killer who will just have brutal outings from time to time like we saw last night.
We have now seen 156 MLB pitches from Cade Horton, and it’s not super encouraging.
→ 9.6% SwStr%, 35% Ball%
Here’s the arsenal:
It’s too early to judge, but there were those who were suspicious about his four-seamer not working against Major Leaguers. The pitch shape bros don’t like it. I say “pitch shape bros” and that can sound condescending, but it’s not. I do value those guys’ input in specific situations like we have here, when a guy is coming from the minors to the Majors for the first time. So I’m down on Horton, and I think you should be to!
Miguel Vargas has made some nice improvements this year. And that’s good, because he was really awful last year. He banged two out in Wrigley yesterday.
What was funny is that I saw him pop up on the home run props bet recommendations as an under. And I never see under there. But MGM was juicing up all of the homer lines there to the point where my model was like “okay that’s way too much”. He was like -450 to not homer or something. I don’t know, I wasn’t going to actually put money on something like that - but it was interesting to me. And then it was really funny that he hit two homers after all of that.
His last two seasons:
The numbers still aren’t impressive this year, but he’s at least cleared the .700 OPS mark down with an xwOBA above .300. He’s hitting the ball harder, finding the sweet spot more often, and he shook off that .177 BABIP from last year.
So he might be somewhat useful for deep leagues.
Daulton Varsho now leads the Blue Jays in homers. And that’s quite a stat since Varsho showed up like five minutes ago.
Six dingers in 49 PAs. I don’t need to tell anybody that that is an elite, elite rate of homers. But completely unsustainable. He has 27 balls in play and six homers, that’s 22%. The league average is 4%.
Let’s check out some low BABIPs of May.
