You probably already noticed, but Woodruff got hurt yesterday. He came out averaging 84.5 on the fastball and was swiftly removed in the second inning.
Something was wrong there! They said it was something with his ARM, no kidding! I’m guessing it’s another shoulder thing, or maybe just an elbow thing that stems from his bum shoulder.
Crazier things have happened, I guess, but I’d be prepared for an IL stint, and perhaps a lengthy one.
That means the Brewers might have to do the thing they hate the most - let Logan Henderson pitch in the Major Leagues. Down in AAA for Henderson:
Built up to five innings in that last start on the 26th with a 9:1 K:BB. His lower-velo fastball continues to be great. I’m not a full believer, but the guy does have 27.1 innings pitched in the Majors with a 2.31 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, a 33.3% K%, and an 8.3% BB%. He has more than earned a spot in the MLB rotation, but they continue to slow roll him.
They don’t have much choice now! So if you need some pitching help, I’d go out and grab him.
There he is! 21 whiffs yesterday in six strong innings against the Braves. He threw fewer sinkers and more curves and changeups.
That’s near a perfectly even distribution of those three pitches, that will make him awfully tough to hit.
Much needed six strong for McCullers in the double header. Sometimes the guy has it. Most of the time, he doesn’t.
It’s been a lot more bad than good, as usual.
It was still a really bad 42% Ball% yesterday, but the whiffs were there, and that bailed him out a bit.
I would not want to start McCullers next time or any time.
He gave up a couple of homers right away and the Cardinals were just all over him for eight hits. But the 9:0 K:BB makes you feel a bit better about it. That was the most hits he’s ever given up in the Majors.
If you’re worried at all, I wouldn’t be.
2024-2025: 31% K%, 5.9% BB%, 0.59 HR/9
………..2026: 29% K%, 5.3% BB%, 1.06 HR/9
All looks mostly the same.
But it’s been tough sledding at the top of the SP ranks. Only Skubal is really giving you the numbers you expected, and even his strikeout rate is down. Crochet is on the IL, and that could end up being a season-wrecker. I guess we’ll see.
The best teams are probably the ones who drafted a bunch of hitters early. That doesn’t mean it will stay that way. As always, be looking to buy low on any of the league’s best players who haven’t had the starts that their owners expected.
Like Valdez, Webb also gave you what you’d normally expect. No problems with Webb, just keep starting him confidently.
Seven strikeouts for Ober. He’s won three in a row and has looked half-decent in the box score for these last three.
The underlying stuff looks awful:
A 9.6% SwStr% and an 18.5% K%. Not going to work, especially from a fly ball pitcher.
He has been throwing the changeup as his primary pitch. So he’s abandoned ship on the fastball. That’s probably wise, but I’m not sure he can be a changeup dude with success.
It’s not a good changeup:
I think we should just continue to stack hitters against Ober. He has looked busted since last year. His fastball is averaging 88.6mph, still way down from what he was doing when he was actually good in 2024.
The first start was a total mirage, it seems.
The K% has fallen to 26% and he’s gotten hit hard, which we predicted would happen this year (.356 xwOBA). I’d absolutely be cutting Soroka for anybody with decent upside (Henderson for example).
Shoutouts are due to Bassitt! He took advantage of a heavy right handed lineup for his best start of the year. That was his first time above ten fantasy points.
And everything looks so, so bad through six starts.
No thanks on Bassitt, but maybe he can claw his way back to being a league-average starter for the rest of the season. I doubt it, but I can’t say it can’t happen.
They both took Skenes deep in the first.
Walker’s K% is high (31.5%), but he’s still with a 21% Brl% and a 39% GB%. I don’t think I’d be cutting the guy until we see an extended period of him doing this 30% K% thing with a high GB% again.
But maybe that extended period is already going. When he was fully crushing it, his launch angle was in the mid-teens. Recently it’s been down to 9-12 degrees.
Last year:
He was around 10-15 all year. It’s not looking great. But the power and speed (he has five steals on an 18% attempt rate) with him still cleaning things up for the Cardinals makes him someone to hold onto for a bit longer at least. I think we’ll end up with at least a couple more big-time hot power streaks.
Wetherholt has really turned it on. Seven bombs now!
The 17% K%, 12% B%, 9.6% Brl% is great to see. The EVs aren’t marvelous (103.7 EV90), but he has a nice 19% Air Pull%, so his power will play up a bit for that. I’m not thinking he has another 6+ homer month, but the guy is probably a top five 2B for the rest of the year.
Your lowest OPS hitters above 110 PAs:
Nasim Nunez has 14 steals to lead the league, but everything else has been a killer on your fantasy team. I guess the .303 OBP isn’t as bad as you’d think with the .191 BA, but no homers and just ten RBI. As long as the Nats keep playing him, he’ll be valuable for the steals, but how long can even a bad team keep a .190 hitter in the lineup? His xBA is .214. Enjoy it while it lasts, I guess.
Trevor Story has been one of the reasons for the Red Sox bad start. His .214 xBA and .251 xwOBA are awful. He’s striking out a lot as usual (30%), but this time he’s not hitting the ball hard when he does get to it (3.6% Brl%). After what he did last year, I think you have to keep him. But it’s been brutal. A .237 OBP! Only seven hitters are below a .250 OBP this year in those 110+ PAs:
If you can, in an OBP/points league, I’d just sit all of these guys until they get going, if they ever do. But I don’t think it’s crazy to drop any of them in a ten-team league, besides Devers, who I think has earned a pretty long leash even with all of the bad news in the profile (it truly is only bad news).
We’ve got some podcasting to do and a slate breakdown to write in detail! So I’m gonna get moving.
