Kevin Gausman, Jacob deGrom, and Corbin Burnes led the day. It was like we were back in 2021 or something!
→ Gausman: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 9 K, 0 BB, 20.7% SwStr%, 30.4% Ball%
→ deGrom: 7 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 9 K, 1 BB, 19.4% SwStr%, 34% Ball%
→ Burnes: 7 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 8 K, 1 BB, 17.7% SwStr%, 30.2% Ball%
It has been a bumpy ride for Gausman this year. He has mixed really bad outings with gems.
That’s three elite starts, two good starts, two kind of “whatever” starts, and three very bad ones.
The season long numbers are pretty encouraging, and that’s the most important thing we have to look at.
→ 4.03 ERA
→ 0.98 WHIP
→ 24.4% K%
→ 5.3% BB%
→ 19.1% K-BB%
→ 13.8% SwStr%
→ 32.1% Ball%
His fastball continues to be fantastic (59% Strike%, 23% Ball%, 12.0% SwStr%), and the splitter has been pretty good in its own right (17.9% SwStr%, 42% Ball%, 53% GB%). Gausman looks like a top 30 or so SP to me! He has a 3.51 SIERA, which is way down from 4.24 last year. With the reliance on an inconsistent splitter, you will have some bad outings, but I do think overall the results are going to be pretty nice as you move forward.
As for Corbin Burnes, we should be feeling a lot better about him now after he had a very nice outing against the Dodgers. I wasn’t buying back in fully on him after the Rockies start, but this was impressive against the loaded LA lineup.
First 7 starts: 19.9% K%, 10.8% BB%, 10.4% SwStr%, 44.2% Strike%, 2.07 WHIP+
Last 2 starts: 36.7% K%, 8.2% BB%, 19.0% SwStr%, 54.5% Strike%, 1.00 WHIP+
The cutter has been back to business in these last two (15.9% SwStr%, 63% Strike%), and the curveball has been great as well with a 37.8% SwStr% on 37 pitches. He does throw that cutter a ton. He’s using it 54% of the time this year, and overall the marks on it aren’t very good:
→ .376 xwOBA
→ .430 SLG
→ 10.7% SwStr
I do think throwing that many cutters will keep the K% lower, around the range that we’ve seen in 2023-2024. He was so good last year because yes, hitters could contact the pitch, but they couldn’t do anything good with it.
Let’s do a quick comparison on the cutter from the last two years.
→ 2024: 45% Usage, 9.9% SwStr%, .308 xwOBA, .362 SLG
→ 2025: 54% Usage, 10.7% SwStr%, .372 xwOBA, .430 SLG
Expecting another .308 xwOBA on the pitch was too optimistic, but .372 is probably inflated this year. The truth is in the middle somewhere. But anyways, you were always stuck with Burnes. It wasn’t like you could trade him for a great return, and you certainly weren’t going to bench or drop him during his rough start. So you’re happy with these last two starts, and I’m guessing that things will be pretty good for him as we move forward. But I don’t think he’s an SP1 in a standrad fantasy elague, the strikeout rate just hasn’t been good enough for that kind of expectation.
And we should take a look at the Jacob deGrom velo.
The AVERAGE:
The MAX:
Both are trending up. And you can see the stark difference if you draw a line after that third start.
But the velo is up particularly these last two starts. He’s averaged 97.8 on the fastball these last two starts and the pitch has a 14.6% SwStr%, a 57% Strike%, and a 21% Ball%. He’s been deGrom again. And that’s good news for you deGrom owners out there, or at least it’s good news provided he can do this and have his elbow not blow up again.
But the deGrom draft pick looks like a massive WINNER right now.
Dustin May had a great outing with his second-straight eight strikeout game. He had not crossed seven strikeouts before these last two. So things are moving upward for him as well. The velo was up last night:
And it was his second-best SwStr% of the year (15.9%). And against a tough opponent no less! Here’s how May has attacked either side of the plate:
So it’s a pretty similar approach. The four-seamer comes more into play against lefties. And that has helped him strike lefties out at a much higher rate.
→ May vs. RHB: 19.3% K%, 8.3% SwStr%, .379 xwOBA
→ May vs. LHB: 25.4% K%, 11.9% SwStr%, .319 xwOBA
Since the four-seamer is the more strikeout-prone fastball, it makes sense that he would strike out lefties a bit more. There is a lot of small sampleness in this, we’re only a couple of months into the season and then I’m splitting that sample in half to find the splits.
But here are your pitchers who are striking out opposite-hand hitters at least five points in K% than the same-hand.
In the case of Dustin May, it’s making me once again wonder why he doesn’t throw the four-seamer more. He’s only thrown it 23 times against righties this year. It works well against lefties (17.5% SwStr% on 97 pitches), so why wouldn’t it work well against righties? Maybe there’s a reason, there probably is.
May has been mostly mediocre this year with a 4.09 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. He’s given up six homers, and at least one homer in his last four starts. There’s only been three times he’s exceeded 20 fantasy points. So I’m not saying he’s a must-own guy in a standard league, but it’s good to see him piling up some strikeouts in these last two starts.
Only six whiffs for Garrett Crochet against the Mets. But he still had a fine (but short) outing. That velo drop a few starts back seems to have been nothing to worry about.
Weird dip there, but he’s been back to his normal velo for three straight outings since then. For the year:
→ 28.7% K%
→ 8.1% BB%
→ 1.41 WHIP+
→ 14.7% SwStr%
→ 33.5% Ball%
Very good numbers, but you have to say that they are significantly worse than last year. But you should have expected that. I don’t think anybody can maintain a 35% K% and a 5.5% BB%. Or at least not 95% of people can.
There’s some Tomoyuki Sugano hype going on. He went six strong innings against the Brewers. He now has a 3.07 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP. And those numbers are despite really poor numbers under the hood:
→ 13.8% K%
→ 1.5 HR/9
He doesn’t walk batters (4.3%), so that helps keep the WHIP down. But man, how do you put up an ERA around three and a WHIP around one with a strikeout rate under 14%. What in the world! I’ll show you how you do it:
SP LOB% Leaders
deGrom 91.3%
Mahle 87.9%
Bubic 87.6%
Sugano 87.5%
Peralta 85.8%
SP BABIP Leaders
Rodon .205
G Holmes .205
T Anderson .210
Mahle .222
Sugano .225
So there you go, he’s in the top five of the two main luck metrics for pitchers. LOB% is something you can control to some extent. You would expect deGrom to have a high LOB%, because he’s very hard to hit. You shouldn’t expect 90%+, but you shouldn’t expect league average, either. But with Sugano, you would expect a league average mark or maybe even worse since he allows so, so many balls in play.
Sugano has given up ten homers this year. Eight of them have been solo jobs, and the other two were two-run dingers. That’s pretty fortunate.
All all pitchers with 8+ homers allowed this year, he’s tied for eighth with the highest solo home run rate in the league. Here’s that leaderboard:
Michael Lorenzen has given up nine homers, all solo jobs. Very lucky there. Bowden Francis might take the take with 12/14 being solo jobs. And giving up 14 homers already is a ton. Scary stuff.
On the flip side of it:
Ten pitchers have a 50% or lower solo home run rate.
So anyways, SUgano has been very, very lucky and I would not want to be starting him ion any fantasy teams. A 13% K% just isn’t going to work.
One more pitcher to highlight ahead of today’s slate. Mike Burrows will start for the Pirates today. He’s been great in AAA:
→ 7 GS, 32.1 IP, 2.51 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 31.5% K%, 8.5% BB%
He’s been over 85 pitches in his last two outings, so he’s fully built up. The pitch mix:
The 15.1% SwStr% is nice, and he’s thrown a good number of strikes. I sort of doubt the fastball works well enough against Major Leaguers for him to matter for fantasy purposes, but he’s a sneaky guy to watch today.
Nick Kurtz now has three homers in his last two games. It took matchups against Kyle Hendricks and Jack Kochanowicz to make it happen, but yeah - we Kurtz has a lot better over the last couple of weeks.
He hit his first career dinger on May 13th. So let’s look at the numbers since that day:
35 PA, 4 HR, .176/.200/.559, 28.8% K%, 2.9% BB%, 25% Brl%, 73% Cont%, .394 xwOBA
I suppose we should say that almost all of the good results have come on those four home runs. The .200 OBP is still pretty impossible to stomach. His swing rate is high (55%), and that has turned into a high chase rate. His zone contact rate has improved dramatically from the first couple of weeks, but it’s still bad at 79.7% in this recent sample.
When Kurtz get to the ball, though, he blasts it. His EV90 on the year is 108.9 and the barrel rate is 12.7%. His season xwOBA has gotten to a non-awful point at .321. That’s impressive honestly given the 35% K% that is putting so many zeroes into the xwOBA calculation.
But it’s good news. The raw power is undeniable, and he’s improving as time moves on - which is just what you want from a rookie like like this. I still don’t think he’s a total must-start in like a ten team redraft league, but he’s probably worth rostering just for the upside. If he can get the K% down into the mid-20s, he’ll be a stud.
One thing that won’t happen, I don’t think, is that he’ll have much success (or even playing time) against lefties. He has a 38% K% and an 0/16 result against the lefties he’s seen so far. He could and would certainly improve on that if given the reps, but I doubt he’s going to get the reps.
