Noah Cameron proved me wrong from what I wrote in the slate preview. He has now put down three very good starts for the Royals.
Three quality starts and a 0.67 WHIP. The standout number is the 11.3% K-BB%. That’s not good. He has just 14 strikeouts in 19.1 innings, and he’s walked a mediocre number of batters as well.
He does have a decent 12.8% SwStr% and a 34.7% Ball%. So that’s a positive sign.
The four-seamer is super light and he has a very slow changeup and slider as well. The secondaries have worked pretty nicely so far, but that fastball seems like it’s going to be a problem. The .102 BABIP shows that he’s been lucky, at least to some extent. He hasn’t been hit hard outside of the two homers (.281 xwOBA).
Maybe there’s more to it. Maybe he has a deceptive delivery and his stuff plays above what the numbers suggest. But I’m not going to be recommending anybody add a guy with an 11% K-BB%. Rules are rules!
For what it’s worth, he put up a 28.6% K% and a 9.8% BB% in AAA before getting the call to fill Ragans’ spot. I’m not sure how he sticks in the rotation once Ragans does return, and I don’t think we’re very far off of that. So don’t spend too much on this guy this weekend.
Rafael Devers had himself a game. He hit two homers and drove in eight. The grand slam was off of Emmanuel Rivera, an infielder, but okay. The point is to say that all of those worries about Devers after the first few weeks have proved ridiculous. He’s up to a .299/.415/.557 line with 12 homers. He leads the league in RBIs. Since April 15th, he has the second-highest OPS in the league (Judge).
So there you go. Another lesson about not changing your mind on stud players over a short sample, no matter what the underlying numbers say in those short samples. Everything looked terrible for Devers during that time, it wasn’t like he was just unlucky. But now he’s right back to the stud hitter he’s always been. Imagine that!
Nick Kurtz hit his fourth homer of the week. He’s now up to a .440 SLG and a .730 OPS for the year - pretty respectable marks. Since May 13th:
44 PA, .179/.250/.590, 27% K%, 9% BB%, 5 HR, 8.6 PA/HR
He is still basically only hitting homers. He has seven hits in this sample, and five of them are homers. But you’ll take homers, right?
Isaac Paredes has had himself a nice week as well. He’s matched Kurtz and Ward with four homers this week. Let’s check that Illustrator on his 11 homers.
When did they rename it “Daikin Park”? That’s awful. Here are Paredes homers since 2023:
So yeah, he only pulls them. I wonder if his teammates ever make fun of him. I feel like if I were Yordan Alvarez I’d definitely make fun of him for not being able to homer to center field or opposite field. I imagine that does happen. Guys are guys in any language.
Paredes has seven homers in May now and is slashing .289/.393/.605.
Here’s where he is on the HR/PA vs. Brl/PA plot:
A true outlier having an elite month and a solid season in his new Astros uniform in … Daikin Park. What is Daikin? Is that like Dunkin’ Donuts, but they spelled it wrong?
How much money do these organizations make from selling the naming rights? I’m still bitter about it not being Heinz Field anymore, although even that was an advertisement so it doesn’t really make sense for me to be mad about it. But Ketchup and Orange Juice are kind of funny things to name a stadium after, you know? Way cooler to sell your soul to a ketchup company than an insurance company, in my opinion.
Ronald Acuna Jr. homered on the first pitch. I can’t deny that being one of the coolest moments of the season so far. Especially cause I’m a Braves fan now. I think that’s the most recent team I said I’m now a fan of, right?
But he hasn’t attempted a steal all year so I’d probably just cut him or trade him for Bryan Reynolds or something like that.
Two dingjobs for Oneil Cruz. That was his first career multi-homer game. Another thing that I imagine a teammate making fun of him for. Even Adam Frazier has done that before! There are just so many opportunities to make fun jokes in life. Imagine Frazier being like “Yo Oneil my max EV is like seven miles per hour and even I’ve had a two homer game you little bitch!”
An Oneil Cruz homer is a very pretty thing to watch. Lots of aura. That’s the word that has replaced “swag”, right? When I was a young pup we’d say “swag” a lot. Like way, way too much. It’s really embarrassing thinking about it.
So your current 10-10 club is:
I wrote extensively yesterday about the case to sell high on Pete Crow-Armstrong. I hope nobody did it yesterday, because he hit two homers and drove in six. He’s now a .287/.319/.589 hitters with the 14-14 you see above. Total stud numbers, but I’d still take a package like Julio Rodriguez + Jack Flaherty for him, just as a hypothetical. That’s easier for me to type out as a hypothetical than to actually click “accept” on, but I won’t have to make such a decision because I drafted PCA precisely zero times.
Slade Cecconi! I said we’d keep an eye on him, so here’s my eye being kept on him.
5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 K, 0 BB, 14 whiffs, 16.7% SwStr%, 33.3% Ball%
You know I like that SwStr%+Ball% combination. That gets a little something going in my loins. But it’s a small 161-pitch sample so far.
But look at all of that! Six pitches, fastball strikes, slider strikes, curveball strikes, low ball rate, high swinging strike rate. Do you know where I’m going with this?
✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅
But, there is bad news. His next two starts are against the Dodgers and Yankees. So, maybe don’t add him yet.
Ryan Gusto threw 79 pitches. That was surprising. And he looked really good through the first few innings, but the end line wasn’t good:
4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 3 BB, 6.3% SwStr%, 50.6% Strike%
Good Strike%, but nothing else. He lost his “SwStr% + MFQ” checkmark. Sad. But I won’t stop talking about Ryan Gusto. Not yet.
Drew Rasmussen ripped off another six scoreless, this time on 76 pitches. That was his second straight start of six scoreless innings under 82 pitches. He is super efficient and now has a 2.60 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP on his 21% K% and 6% BB%.
All he has to do to have success is not give up homers. That’s true for any pitcher who doesn’t have a big walk issue. And it’s easier said than done! But I still want to be starting Rasmussen most times out. The WHIP is so nice.
Here’s your list of pitchers with 7+ starts and a WHIP <= 1.
One more thing to touch on - Ezequiel Tovar. He has missed a lot of this season to injury, but he has been incredible when on the field.
His .385 xwOBA is very high and he spots a .322 xBA with a .298/.337/.468 actual slash line. The K% is down to 18%, and he’s even walking a little bit (5%). That’s high for him.
The key to unlock Tovar’s potential has always been in the realm of plate discipline.
We have seen him swinging a little bit less this year (62% → 60%), and also chasing a little bit less (44% → 41%). Both numbers are still very high. The in-zone contact rate has shot way up, though (78% → 87%). So that’s a very good thing to see. I’m sure he’ll still have some slumps, as any high swing rate hitter will. His EV90 is up from 103 to 105.3 this year, so that’s another good sign.
I’ve long liked Tovar for roto fantasy leagues, and I like him a whole lot right now. There are many good signs here, and I bet you can go get him for cheap in your fantasy leagues. Nobody wants to touch Rockies players right now, but I think Tovar and Beck are guys who should be owned in most leagues.
My kids are watching me type all of this right now. And I think they’re very impressed with my typing abilities. My daughter can even read the words! She’s reading the words as I type this, although I’m typing them way faster than she’s reading them. So she’s catching up, but I think she wants me to get off the computer so we can go get a donut. So let’s do that. Goodbye, people!
