We’re going to the beach pretty soon. And my youngest kid is now three years old, so I don’t have any kids that need to be constantly watched. Going swimiming in the ocean is one of the more deranged weird things you can do in life, and I’m a normal guy with a decent head on my shoulders, so I won’t be doing that.
So what I need are books to read. Please let me know if you have any books you think I’ll like. It’s gotta be a pretty well-known book because I have to get it from the library. I’m not going to read from a screen on the beach, and it’s too late for me to buy a physical book on Amazon.
I’m thinking I’ll read Pilgrim’s Progress if I can find it. I try to read some of those classics of Western Society. But I also like books about dudes gambling and doing dumb stuff and seeing their lives completely fall apart.
Davis Martin did it again against the Twins. Six strong innings with 14 whiffs and a 16.7% SwStr%. He now has a27% K% with a 5.3% BB%.
I didn’t notice how good his slider has been this year.
The four-seamer (14.9% SwStr%) and slider (28.5% SwStr%) have both been incredible. It really does all look pretty believable. The JA ERA is at 3.42, which is in the top 25 or so in the league depending on how you’re filtering.
I’ve updated my SP grades from the little series I did earlier this month. I just did 1-10 scoring rather than ranks. But I’ve moved Davis Martin up to an EIGHT now. Which is it crazy.
Check out those grades here
Here are my tens:
My nines:
So go in there and see the rest of the dudes and let me know if I’m missing anybody. I’ll try to do some updates as the season goes on.
Spencer Arrighetti
6.0IP 3H 1ER 1R 3K 1BB
He’s probably been the luckiest pitcher in the league at this point. And yes, that’s what SIERA - ERA says:
.210 BABIP, 3.9% HR/FB, 89% LOB%. Wow.
Check out that full sheet here.
Your “unluckiest”:
You always get a list of really bad pitchers when you do this. Yes, Kyle Freeland deserves better than his 8.06 ERA. YOU CAUGHT US. But there’s some sort of ceiling on SIERA. It won’t really go above five. Although Freeland has figured out a way to do that on occasion (5.24 in 2023).
The worst SIERAs of the last five years:
2023 Adam Wainwright 5.83
2025 Erick Fedde 5.60
2021 John Gant 5.49
2025 Randy Vasquez 5.43
2023 Michael Kopech 5.41
So the ceiling is six. That means any time you have an EIGHT ERA, you’ll look pretty lucky.
We can throw on a filter to keep it above a 13% K-BB% and check again:
Jack Flaherty pitched yesterday and had another nice strikeout total against the Angels.
5.67IP 6H 3ER 3R 9K 1BB
He had 20 whiffs to tie with Paul Skenes for the lead, but six hits and three runs kept his ERA jacked way up there. The 61% LOB% isn’t helping him. The hits he allows are timed so poorly. His K-BB% keeps growing. He has a 20:1 K:BB the last three starts, looking like a total stud in that regard. But he’s given up at least five hits in six of his last seven, and he’s given up a 1.4 HR/9.
But let’s stick to our principles. We look at this last five starts and see this:
29.6% K%
4.6% BB%
32:5 K:BB
1.1 HR/9
He’s been really good, but very unfortunate. I’d call him a BUY.
13 SPs have a K-BB% above 22% in May (5 GS). Here they are, ordered by ERA.
PLAYER | K-BB% | ERA
1. Misiorowski | 39% | 0.29
2. Sanchez | 29% | 0.00
3. Cease | 28% | 3.23
4. Martin | 27% | 2.05
5. Sale | 27% | 1.69
6. Ryan | 26% | 1.73
7. Skenes | 28% | 2.87
8. Sheehan | 24% |

He gets the Rays and Twins next up, so I think you could go there. The schedule should remain pretty soft playing in that AL Central where we don’t see much offense.
Payton Tolle
4.67IP 5H 2ER 2R 7K 2BB
Sick start with a 19.1% SwStr% and a 31.9% Ball%. But the lack of efficiency and some base runners in the fifth got him pulled after 4.2. The pitch count ceiling looks to be around 95:
But the numbers have been excellent:
That’s a 22% K-BB% with whiffs and a low ball rate and no problems with barrels allowed, at least not yet. He is a fly-ball pitcher, so that stuff could catch up to him, but the guy is nasty.
He is getting back to his four-seamer a bit, throwing it 57% of the time last night. The curveball has been elite, so I’m not sure why he’s only using that 10% of the time.
That’s how he attacks lefties and righties. The curve is more for righties, but I think he should ramp up the usage a bit.
Grayson Rodriguez
5.0IP 2H 1ER 1R 5K 2BB
It was a matchup with the Tigers. And they are now the second-worst offense in the league by OPS over the last month (.619), so it was a soft one for Grayson. But he got the job done.
I don’t think it will continue. But if you added him for that start, you’ll want to keep him for his next one - which should be at home against the Rockies. And after that, he gets the Astros. So you could ride this out for a little bit.
If you have access to the app as a paid subscriber, I hope you’re using the SP Planner page. You can do stuff like this:

Under 50% ownership, next three days, sort by Start Grade descending:
Not much coming up to like. Zebby is probably fine with the Pirates lineup pretty banged up and beatable right now. Maybe Kai-Wei Teng or Coleman Crow. But I don’t feel good about anybody there.
Chris Sale
5.0IP 6H 2ER 2R 8K 3BB
Sale is starting to throw harder. He’s had high-90s in his bag all season long, often reaching for it. But he averaged 97 last night.
And he had another great start. Although he was a little wild and inefficient, unable to pitch into the sixth.
Guy is elite. I say the same thing every time he pitches. Definitely wish I would have drafted him.
Here’s Semien’s plot:
He has a .271 xBA and a .327 xwOBA in May with an 8.1% Brl% and a 20% K%. But he’s hitting .207/.250/.326. A .225 BABIP. He’s a .250 BABIP guy in each of the last two years. That’s what you get when you’re hitting a lot of weak fly balls. But .225 is 25 points below that, so he should get a little better.
Brandon Nimmo:
He’s at a .340 wOBA and a .385 xwOBA on the year.
Here are the biggest wOBA to xwOBA gaps of the season:
You can buy low on plenty of these guys, except for probably Yordan Alvarez. Wild to see a dude with a .450 wOBA being unlucky.
Bo Bichette and Fernando Tatis are the ones I’d be going after. I think their owners could actually be sick enough of them to give you a good deal. You probably can’t pull it off for a guy like Acuna Jr. because that 2023 season is still in people’s minds.
Brandon Nimmo hits in this bad lineup in a terrible ballpark for hitting. And he doesn’t steal bags, so he’s a tough guy to roster in standard roto leagues, even though he should get the extra base hits falling pretty soon.
The other way around here:
Mickey Moniak has some wild gaps going on. He’s on the IL, so it doesn’t really matter that much in the short term. But a .324 xwOBA with a .403 wOBA is wild. A 52 point gap in the batting average! Coors helps, these xStats do not consider Coors Field. So maybe you cut the gaps in half in your mind or something like that, but yeah Moniak certainly isn’t one of the top ten hitters in the league like a lot of the stats would suggest.
It looks to me like the Zack Gelof thing is/was fake.
That .291 xwOBA tells you a lot. His K% is still not a huge problem when you consider it used to be like 35%. But 25% still ain’t great.
Josh Jung is for real, though:
Still not a ton of barrels, which means not a ton of homers, but he’s consistently getting quality batted balls into play and that has him with a .308 xBA.
Only seven hitters have 200+ PAs and an xBA above .300
Yordan Alvarez .345
Ketel Marte .310
Bobby Witt Jr. .309
Josh Jung .308
Vlad Guerrero Jr. .305
Drake Baldwin .305
Michael Harris II .303
Let’s go down to .290:
Nick Gonzales .298
Yandy Diaz .296
Bryce Harper .293
William Contreras .293
Otto Lopez .291
Brandon Nimmo .291
Shea Langeliers .290
Ben Rice
Ben Rice has gone a little cold, hasn’t he?
Okay nothing that bad. An .822 OPS and six bombs in May. That’s still pretty good.
Here are some horrible OPS marks of May for hitters you probably have on your fantasy teams. I’ll give you CUT/KEEP in brackets with my mind on like a 12-team roto league.
Adolis Garcia .423 [CUT]
Dansby Swanson .446 [CUT]
Nasim Nunez .467 [CUT unless you absolutely need the SB]
Machado .477 [KEEP]
Cole Young .509 [CUT]
Matt Chapman .511 [CUT]
Andres Gimenez .512 [CUT]
Sal Frelick .522 [CUT]
Carter Jensen .529 [CUT unless the other option is a bad catcher with no upside]
Vaughn Grissom .529 [never should have owned him in the first place]
Vlad Guerrero Jr .539 [KEEP/BUY]
Masyn Winn .541 [CUT]
Xander Bogaerts .545 [CUT]
Trea Turner .552 [KEEP/BUY]
Seiya Suzuki .552 [KEEP]
