Tomorrow we take off for vacation. A 12-hour car trip to the beach. A true mental test for a mom and a dad. But we are experts, and it will be fine. The destination is much sweeter when the travel is long.
So I won’t have daily notes tomorrow, I don’t think. I will get a run of the projections done before we leave, and then I’ll get them running again, automated like usual, by noon. And then we’ll get back to normal by Monday - but the projections and resources will always be updated daily no matter what’s going. And maybe my wife will drive for a bit in the first leg of the trip, and I’ll be tempted enough to do some daily notes-ing in the car. But last time I did that, I felt really sick, and it was not worth it at all. So we’ll see.
We go to the beach every year, and this will be the first time since the summer of 2018 that we haven’t had a kid under two years old. So it’s going to be nice. For the last six years, there has always been a kid who needs full-time attention so they won’t eat sand and/or die. But 2.5-year-olds are basically adults, so we’re just going to let them go and see what happens. I’m not even a beach guy, personally. I think it’s insane that people actually go into the ocean. But I do love getting the long boardwalk run in each morning and then having a chair and a book when we go to the beach. Watching the kids play and being really excited is fun, too.
Not much happened yesterday in baseball. MacKenzie Gore continued his mega-breakout season.
6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 8 K, 0 BB, 18 whiffs, 18.9% SwStr%
The improvements this year have been pretty surprising.
Needless to say, you do not often see a guy increase his strikeout rate by more than ten points, but that’s what Gore has done. I don’t think he keeps up a 35%+ K% all year, but there is a ton of wiggle room in that 29% K-BB%. You have to be feeling like you have an SP1 on your team with Gore the rest of the way.
His batted ball profile is kind of weird, I’ll say that.
→ 10.3% Brl%
→ .361 BABIP
→ .224 xBA
→ .299 xwOBA
→ 47% Hard Hit%
He’s not allowing many balls in play with that 36% K%; that’s the main point. But when hitters are getting to it - they’re hitting it hard. But honestly, those two numbers (10.3% Brl%, .361 BABIP) are more likely to improve than anything else - so it’s even better news for Gore in my book.
He has been as consistent this year as anybody in delivering strikeouts. He has at least six strikeouts in 11 of his 12 starts (91.7%). Only Zack Wheeler has matched that rate.
If we do 7+ strikeouts, only Logan Gilbert matches his ratio, but that was in half of the sample:
Great stuff from Gore, I’m not sure what else to say about him!
Shane Baz had another not so great start.
5.2 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 0 BB
It’s starting to get really confusing as to how he started the year so well.
First 3 GS: 1.42 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, 38% K%, 5.6% BB%
Last 8 GS: 6.53 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, 15.1% K%, 5.4% BB%
He is poopy. The K-BB% is under 13%, and that’s the main thing you need to know. He hasn’t been without some bad luck, though.
The GB% is good at 50% - and that’s what you want to see in that ballpark. But he has been given no grace on his fly balls with a 27% HR/FB and a 12.4% Brl%. Hitters have crushed his mistakes. He’ll be better than a 6.53 ERA moving forward (obviously), but I still don’t think you can put him on a fantasy team right now. Weird pitcher.
The offensive standout of the day was James Wood. He’s on a five-game hitting streak right now with three homers and three doubles in that time. That has his season line up to this:
.288/.385/.571, .955 OPS, 27% K%, 13% BB%, 15 HR, 9 SB
Great stuff. The K% is high, but 27% is acceptable for someone with these tools. His EV90 is at 111.6, so he absolutely murders the ball on contact. The GB% is still a touch high as well, but it’s improved since last year. Those are the two things we wanted to see from Wood (improvement in K% and GB%), and we’ve gotten them.
2024 K%: 29%
2025 K%: 27%
2024 GB%: 55%
2025 GB%: 52%
The quality of contact has improved as well. Add on the steals ability and you have a guy that I think would be a first-round consideration right now if drafting today.
Your top fantasy hitters right now have to be..
Pretty clear top two there. And this clump:
Bobby Witt Jr.
Kyle Tucker
Corbin Carroll
And after that, I think you start thinking about James Wood.
Elly De La Cruz
Jose Ramirez
James Wood
Fernando Tatis Jr.
Don’t yell at me for that list, I did it quickly. There are plenty more guys that would be in the conversation, but that goes to show, I think, Wood as a late-first or early-second round bat for next year, at least if things finish this year the way they currently are.
Since I’ll be out a bit this weekend, let’s look ahead to some weekend SPs of interest.
David Peterson (NYM) vs. COL: I suspect he’s owned in most of the leagues my readers are in. But he gets the Rockies tonight, and he is under 50% owned on Yahoo. So there you go. Peterson has never convinced me that he’s good, but he has a 3.10 ERA this year in ten starts. His strikeout rate is about average (22%), and the walks are nothing special (9%), but his sinker keeps the ball in the yard (67% GB% on 29% usage), and he usually posts low quality of contact against. Certainly, you want to start him against the Rockies tonight.
Zebby Matthews (MIN) vs. SEA: Matthews is not who we thought he was last year when he came up to the bigs sporting a minor league BB% of like 2-3%. He has an 11.4% BB% and a 34.9% Ball% in his two Major League outings so far. But he is striking dudes out (14 in two outings). His SwStr% is 13.2%, his fastball is averaging 96.6, and his slider has been nasty (22% SwStr%). The trouble is that he’s a heavy, heavy fly ball pitcher. He gave up 11 homers in nine starts last year (2.6 HR/9), and that wrecked his ERA (6.69). He has not allowed a dinger in his two starts this year, but his 29% GB% would suggest that he’s going to be giving those up. So far, the “air balls” have been line drives rather than homers. And it’s not like that’s a good thing. Line drives are bad. But certainly some of those line drives will bleed into fly balls, and that will turn into homers. But if he can keep up a high K%, he’ll be fine. I’d probably start him against the M’s, but I can’t say it’s safe.
Luis L. Ortiz (CLE) vs. LAA: Great spot here, even with Trout returning. Getting Trout back doesn’t even help the Angels strikeout problem, since he’s quite a high K% guy at this point in his career. Ortiz has been getting the whiff this year (14.4% SwStr%, 25.3% K%), so he is in a great spot to push above 6-7 strikeouts here. Nothing else about him makes you like the idea of starting him very much (12% BB%, .361 xwOBA allowed), but there’s always huge fantasy upside if you’re projecting a 27%+ K% for a given start - and that’s where we’re at tonight.
Casey Mize (DET) vs. KC: Mize will make his second start after returning from an IL stint. He’s probably owned in your league, I guess. He has a 2.42 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP on the year. I don’t believe in it much (16.5% K-BB%), but he’s clearly improved and is at least a decent pitcher in a nice matchup tonight.
Slade Cecconi (CLE) vs. LAA: He was supposed to start against the Dodgers on Wednesday, but a groin thing pushed him back to this great matchup with the Angels. I’m not convinced by Cecconi yet, but the 18% SwStr%, 31% K%, and 32.9% Ball% have certainly caught our attention in his first two starts. It’s all of just 161 pitches, but it’s certainly good enough for me to grab him for this Angels matchup and then see where we’re at with him afterwards.
Ben Brown (CHC) vs. Reds: He has gotten trucked two times in a row now, including by this same Reds team in his last outing. We talked a lot about his bad luck earlier this week in the notes. He has a very nice 19% K-BB% and a 13.6% SwStr% + 34% Ball% for the year. That turns into a 3.03 JA ERA, very good. But things have gone haywire for him on contact (.393 BABIP), and he has one of the lowest strand rates in the league. I’m buying Brown in deeper leagues, but it’s not without some level of doubt, given his two-pitch dependency.
Colton Gordon (HOU) vs. Rays: This is a home start for Gordon, and that will always be preferable against the Rays. The thing to know about this guy is that he’s a strike-thrower. His minor league BB% was 4.7% before getting the call-up, and so far, he has just two walks in 14.2 MLB innings (no walks in his last two starts). The ball rate is 28.6%, which is elite - and it will turn into some very good starts when the batted balls go at his fielders. However, the K% doesn’t seem to be legitimate. He has just a 7.1% SwStr% on his 252 pitches thrown. His fastball is at 91mph with a 5.9% SwStr%, and he doesn’t have a single pitch with a double-digit SwStr%. Not good there. But the lack of walks always gives you some chance of a good start. If variance goes in his direction, this is a guy who can sail through six innings.
Michael Soroka (WSH) vs. ARI: Tough matchup for Soroka, but I want to keep an eye on him. Firstly, he’s RP eligible - and that helps quite a bit in some fantasy leagues. Secondly, he’s been good this year so far. The JA ERA checks in at 3.04. His BB% is under 5%, and the K% is actually above the league average at 23%. That’s an 18.5% K-BB% - very good. I doubt the K% stays above 20% for long (9.9% SwStr%), but he does have excellent command a little more fastball velo this year (94.1), so who knows - maybe he’ll be a Logan Webb Lite type pitcher. That’s overly optimistic, I guess, but he’s an interesting target in deep leagues.
Will Warren (NYY) vs. LAD: Tough, tough test for Warren here. I’m not sure I’d start him in this matchup, but I do think he should be close to universally owned at this point. He’s second in the league in K-BB% in May. So that’s worth a roster spot. And this matchup with the Dodgers will teach us a lot, I think.
Ryan Weathers (MIA) vs. SF: I’m pretty sure that Weathers is like an SP3 at worst in fantasy leagues. The early schedule has been brutal for him (CHC, CHC, SD), but he’s passed the test each time and has put up a 16.3% K-BB% with a 3.40 JA ERA in those three outings. Now things start to lighten up for him in this matchup with the Giants. After that, he’ll get the Rays and the Nationals. So, even in some weird, like eight-team league, I’d be adding him immediately if available. Don’t wait!
Gavin Williams (CLE) vs. LAA: We’re streaming all the Guardians this weekend against LAA! It’s a great spot for Williams after his rough start to the week in that Dodgers matchup. If you aren’t using him here, you aren’t using him anywhere.
Hayden Birdsong (SF) vs. MIA: He has a 25.6% K% and a 5.1% BB% in his two outings since joining the rotation. The SwStr% is nice at 13.1%, and the command issues haven’t been an issue so far. The 36.3% Ball% does suggest the walks are coming, but that number is not out of control. And obviously, this is a must-start matchup.
One guy I’m trying to add ahead of next week is Richard Fitts. I’m guessing he’ll be a popular “two-start streamer pick” since his first matchup is against the Angels. If the Red Sox stick to a five-man rotation next week, the second one will be against the Yankees. But if they push him back one day (I’d say somewhat likely given his abbreviated rehab), he’d get a two-start week the following week against the Rays and then those Yankees. So he’s got the Yankees at least twice in his next four starts. After that, it’s a nice schedule. And the real reason for this is that I think Fitts might be very good.
He is one of the five-check starters on the checklist:
It’s a four-star sample, so we need more data, but a good start, no doubt - especially since this is a guy who a lot of smart people were pretty interested in coming into the season.
He has a very deep pitch mix with a 95mph fastball that has returned good marks on 107 offerings so far. The slider/sweeper combo behind it seems to work well, and he just has a lot of other options to throw at people if things aren’t going super well.
Time will tell, but I’m pretty interested in Fitts right now. I’d say him and Cecconi are the guys I’d be most interested in grabbing right now if we’re thinking about super low-owned guys with potential long-term value.
That will do it. I’ll get some Friday night slate analysis out later today - but remember, no Daily Notes after this until probably Monday. God bless you all!
