FOUR walk-off homers last night! Wow!
Why not just take a look at each guy? That’s kind of thematic and CUTE.
The big difference this year is his 15% BB%. He has a .386 OBP. But that’s the only thing really working for him. His 2.4% HR% is the same as it was last year when he hit just 16 bombs. And he has a 5% stolen base attempt rate. The 36 runs and 37 RBI are juiced up because of the improved lineup around him, and that might have something to do with the higher walk rate as well, so he’s better this year than last year, but he’s not exactly breaking back into 25-10 territory like he was doing at his best.
This Vargas keeps mashing. A 17% K% with a 15% Brl%. He’s already set a career high in steals, and he’s 3/4ths of the way to his 16 homers from last year.
He’s got seven homers in May with a .901 OPS.
This guy was a big name prospect for the Royals. He hit 41 homers in the minors in 2021 with a 1.011 OPS. But in the Majors:
He hasn’t caught on. He’s been half-decent with the .726 OPS for the Mets, but the strikeouts are still way high and he’s not playing very much.
Two homers and a steal last night! He raised his season OPS from .571 to .614!
But he’s been pretty garbo! Maybe he can get going again. He did have a .763 OPS with 26 homers in 2024. So there’s something in there, but it hasn’t looked good for most of his career. There are plenty of options at shortstop to where you don’t have to roster this guy in standard leagues.
The Jared Jones return didn’t go great.
4.33IP 7H 5ER 5R 6K 2BB
He gave up five runs and two homers. But he threw 77 pitches and got 15 whiffs for a 19.5% SwStr% with a 6:2 K:BB.
A 31.2% Ball% is a pretty good sign. So just a couple of misplaced fastballs that got hit a long way… it could have gone a lot worse for the guy. He should be a decent strikeout pitcher if he has this sort of strike-throwing ability this year, but we haven’t seen enough of the guy in the Majors to know who he truly is yet.
I do think he’ll be a guy who gives up homers. Heavy fastballs and sliders… that’s what happens. But there was 39% usage of the changeup + curve there, which is nice to see. There’s plenty of ceiling on Jones. And we’re looking forward to his next start to see more.

Of course I’m playing against this guy this week. He went 9:0 K:BB against the Phillies in seven shutties.
So that’s really lame and not cool.
He has truly pitched better in the last four. 25 strikeouts to four walks in 26.2 innings. And his Stuff+ was up a bit last night:
His fastball was at 102, and he’s at 97 on that pitch for the year. So that’s all weird and I hate that guy.
5.0IP 6H 4ER 6R 5K 1BB
15 whiffs though! Kolek isn’t new, and just cause you throw a CGSO doesn’t mean you’re good. And he’s not good.
5.0IP 3H 3ER 3R 7K 4BB
We’ve gotta take a look at this guy. Because he’s getting into the fantasy league conversation. A 26% K% this year with a 11% BB% and a .299 xwOBA allowed.
His sweeper does the job, but the four-seamer is a liability. No good fastball to speak of. So he’s very dependent on the breaking balls and stuff to get whiffs. That creates a very volatile pitcher, but it’s worked okay so far for the Astros.
6.0IP 5H 1ER 1R 5K 3BB
Baby Soriano! Heavy sinkers, ground balls, a few strikeouts, and some walks. That’s who they are. It won’t be consistent, but they’ll mostly avoid the disaster start because it’s so hard to hit the ball in the air on these guys.
4.67IP 7H 2ER 4R 5K 1BB
The career:
This is the worst K-BB% of his career so far. The K% is down several points from where it’s always been, and there’s been no corresponding improvement in the walk rate. And he doesn’t have the .243 BABIP he had last year (.279 this year, above his career average of .266). So the ERA is MID and the WHIP is BAD. He was a bad pick this year at that cost, my guys.
But he’s still fine. He’s not doing horribly. He’s just not the SP2 you drafted him as.
6.0IP 6H 4ER 4R 3K 1BB
Still struggling for strikeouts. The fastball just isn’t as good as it was last year. I don’t know why, don’t ask me. But he’s up to a 6.84 ERA with a 1.56 WHIP. Pretty discouraging stuff.
The HR/FB is way high, I’ll give him that.
The .222 BABIP is very low, though. His .280 xBA allowed and .354 xwOBA show you a lot. Bad k-BB%, bad pitcher! That’s the rule.
6.0IP 6H 5ER 6R 6K 3BB
This guy got litty at high ownership in DFS last night and I thought I was made in the shade for not having him. But then my lineup scored 60 total points and I lost it all!
Just a bad night. That fastball got taken advantage of bad. It’s now allowed three homers on a .366 xwOBA. It’s a problem pitch for him, and it will keep resulting in bad outings from time to time like this when he can’t get away with getting outs only with the breakers.
6.33IP 4H 0ER 0R 3K 1BB
Two good starts in a row for Gore albeit without the strikeouts. I suppose this attack method has worked, but it’s been two very soft matchups, so I’m not feeling great about it as a Gore owner.
That’s from his last two. League average SwStr%, league average Ball%, but no homers allowed on a 42% GB%. That’s a crazy low 19% FB%. It means he’s getting pop-ups and line drives. I don’t think this kind of stuff is sustainable for him, but we could see the whiffs come back at any instant - he’s never had much trouble with that.
7.0IP 6H 1ER 1R 1K 1BB
ONE strikeout for Melton?
He’s thrown all of 168 pitches so far, but a 7.7% SwStr% and .346 xwOBA is pretty GROSS. Especially with the 38% Ball% and low Stuff+ marks. You’re probably liking those seven one-run innings he gave you, but I wouldn’t be holding out a ton of hope for this guy right now. But we need to see more.
6.0IP 4H 1ER 1R 3K 2BB
Fastball velo has fallen down under 94.
Just three whiffs in that one. So he was very lucky to do as well as he did.
5.33IP 5H 5ER 5R 2K 1BB
Is he hurt or something? Last three:
A 6.8% K-BB% with a 9.7% SwStr% and a 4.66 JA ERA. Really bad stuff from Imanaga lately. But you shouldn’t give up yet. He gave up three more homers last night, making for EIGHT in his last three starts. He gave up FIVE the whole season before that.
This is what happens to this guy when it gets warmer. I mean it shouldn’t be THIS bad for long, but he’s one of the easiest dudes to hit homers off of in the league.
Here’s everybody with 40+ starts and a 1.6+ HR/9 the last three seasons:
Most of these guys have lost their jobs.
Nelson Velasquez is back. He got called up with Jimmy Crooks! And Velasquez hit a homer. In the minors this year:
MEH. This dude played for the Cubs for a bit, I REMEMBER IT. And he had a huge barrel rate but a big strikeout rate and never stuck. So that’s who he is.
Jimmy Crooks has been mashing in AAA:
So he’ll get catcher reps with the Cardinals when Herrera goes to DH. But that strikeout rate sucks. He could be a decent power contributor at the catcher position for you. But more than likely he’s like a 3-4 game a week guy max. But interesting to see the Cardinals making some roster changes.
Eury Perez is out for eight weeks. It really sucks that Thomas White and Robbie Snelling got hurt. They’d both be in that rotation right now, no doubt about it. But the Marlins have had a brutal season. Brutal.
