Check out yesterday’s box scores here
I really jacked something up with some of the data this morning. There was an unknown player name or something and it caused my box score data to delete every day of hitter data this year except for yesterday. So I’m fixing that with urgency and doing work meetings and that stuff. So these notes might be abbreviated today.
It would be hard not to pick someone from the Cubs. They beat the Brewers 17-3, outhitting them 20-9.
Alex Bregman hit three more homers. His second three-homer game of the year. Conforto, Suzuki, Tyrone Taylor, and Hoerner all added homers as well. The winds were in their favor, but I can’t give some wind credit for nine homers hit. Kyle Harrison gave up five homers, an incredible number.
It would be easier to forgive that for Harrison is Clay Holmes didn’t have one of his better starts of the year with six scoreless inning and eight strikeouts.
The difference between those two, as we mentioned in the slate preview, is that Harrison is a fly ball pitcher and Holmes is a ground ball pitcher. The Cubs seemed to have acquired pitching at the deadline that suits their environment. They have an elite infield defense and a ballpark that can turn into a launching pads with the wind situation. So they went and got David Peterson (earlier than the deadline but still), Holmes, and Kevin Gausman. Ground ball guys. Very smart stuff, and this is a pretty sweet example of that for me.
Holmes went for a 61.5% GB% yesterday and it worked out marvelously. The eight strikeouts is super uncommon, but it was an added bonus. Kyle Harrison had a 26% GB% yesterday and almost all of those fly balls turned into homers.
What Bregman did in August is astounding. His monthly numbers here from FanGraphs since my box score dashboard is all jacked up:
30 RBI from March through June, and 30 in August. He tripled his home run total from July, which had been his best monrth in that regard, and now the dude sits here with 23 homers with a month to play. This season is going to end up looking pretty good for Bregman.
His line now: .258/.345/.440, 23 HR, 80 R, 73 RBI. He’ll end up scoring 90+ runs, driving 80+, and probably getting over 25 homers. The Cubs look pretty sharp with all of the moves they’ve made lately. I’m sure I’m forgetting some bad ones, but that’s a very good baseball team right now.
Clay Holmes now has a 1.55 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 16.2% K%, and 8.1% BB% with the Cubs. A 0.31 HR/9 has helped the cause, but he has leaned directly into his ground ball ways. Throw a hard sinker, let the ball get hit at Bregman/Hoerner/Ramirez/whoever else, and profit. He’s given up one run in his four starts.
Anthony Molina (Giants) led the day with a 24% SwStr% against the Braves.
→ 5.0IP 6H 3ER 3R 6K 0BB
A pretty impressive start there. It was his first real start for the Giants in the Majors. The fastball at 92.2 put up a 20.5% SwStr%, 57% Strike%, .192 xwOBA. The changeup/slider/curve were all nasty as well.
Molina in the minors this year:
63.1 IP, 3.55 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 24.6% K%, 8.3% BB%, 0.99 HR/9
He’s a 24 year old without much prospect buzz in his past. So this was probably nothing. The Giants got him for Tyler Mahle, so this was extra interesting. A sort of revenge game! But he’s someone to keep an eye on, I guess, it looks like he has some pretty nasty stuff.
Jacob deGrom did what you thought he would against the Athletics.
7.0IP 1H 0ER 0R 8K 0BB
19 whiffs, 22.4% SwStr%. Dominant stuff.
On the other side of that was my worst DFS decision of the night, and a guy I doubled down on by streaming in my league. I used a lot of Gage Jump, who got trucked by the Rangers.
4.1 IP, 6 H, 7 ER, 2 K, 3 BB, -6 fantasy points
He’s been a mixed bag. It’s either been very good or very bad. I thought he would have a nice week this time facing the Rangers and Mariners on the road, but that’s not going to happen now.
I watched most of the start because I’m in max pucker mode in a huge H2H matchup in the home league. He was touching 97-98 with the fastball, which is a ton of velo from a lefty. But it didn’t work. He doesn’t have great secondaries and the command is clearly very bad. So bad choices were made by me.
Another big SP outing came from Taj Bradley against the Tigers.
7.0IP 4H 1ER 1R 9K 3BB
It’s been a successfull season from Bradley, and this was some of his best work. The Tigers are a pretty good matchup with Riley Greene on the shelf. Bradley had 15 whiffs, averaged 97.3 on the fastball. His command wasn’t great (three walks, 36.5% Ball%), but they weren’t able to hit him and it was a big win for Bradley owners.
Walbert Urena also kept his breakout season going.
7.0IP 5H 1ER 1R 8K 0BB
He’s had some bad ones, but this was his third start with 6+ scoreless innings in August. He has a 2.85 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 10.7% K-BB%, and 0.58 HR/9.
The easiest way to say it is that Walbert Urena is just Jose Soriano. That’s who he is. Lower strikeouts, a bad walk rate, but a guy who is nearly impossible to hit out of the ballpark. That turns into some very efficient, great outings, but also a bad WHIP and some really bad starts.
In case you weren’t already convinced, Jackson Jobe is not good at this moment.
5.0IP 6H 4ER 5R 4K 2BB
The season numbers:
The 4.63 JA ERA and 4.18 JA SIERA tell you a lot. We like to get things down to as few numbers as possible here, and those two do a good job giving you a quick idea about if a guy is any good or not.
JA ERA = SwStr% and Ball%
JA SIERA = K% and BB%
So I like looking at JA ERA in smaller samples. Jobe’s 9.0% SwStr% and 38.9% Ball% is an awful combination. He’s in the bottom left quadrant of the SwStr% vs. Ball% plot:
Not where you want to be.
Payton Tolle got hit around by Randy Arozarena. Randy pretty much ruined his day all by himself.
5.67IP 6H 4ER 4R 6K 2BB
He threw 96 pitches, which was good to see. Still a good 14.6% SwStr% and 33.3% Ball%, but Randy was all over him and the result was not good at the end of the night.
We should give Elmer Rodriguez another look. It wasn’t a good result against the Angels:
3.67IP 4H 4ER 4R 5K 3BB
Elmer has 21 strikeouts and 16 walks in 26.2 big league innings. So he doesn’t look to be ready for prime time, either. He’s just throwing too many sinkers.
46% sinker usage rarely works for fantasy leagues. Guys like Walbert Urena can make it work, but most of these guys end up just being sub-20% K% guys. The plus side is that you typically don’t give up many homers. So if you have really good command and a low walk rate, you can make it work and end up with a pretty good ERA and good efficiency. But Elmer’s 12.8% BB% shows you he has a lot of work to do.
General terms here - you shouldn’t be too into prospect pitchers that throw a lot of sinkers (otherwise called two-seamers).
Aaron Nola - 5.0IP 5H 1ER 1R 4K 2BB
He got the win and gave up one run, so we’ll take that for fantasy league. It was a tough matchup with Arizona. I suppose it’s another good outing for Nola who now has a 2.50 ERA over his last seven starts.
Daylen Lile kept his hot second half going with two more dongs. His July-August were elite. 12 bombs, six steals:
Lile is coming alive after a pretty disappointing first three months. He’s a splits guy. He’s been crushing righties but doing nothing against lefties, so it would seem that he’d be a platoon bat in an ideal world for the Nats.
Ryan Jeffers also hit two bombs. He hasn’t made a ton of noise since coming back from his long IL stint, but he’s had a nice season offensively:
That’s a 25-homer pace with a .267 average, very useful for a catcher.
The Twins have had some big games in August. It’s a pretty great division to hit in. Not many good arms in that NL Central. Some Twins player stats since the second half began:
Keaschall has been a stud, Culpepper has been pretty good, Brooks Lee has managed eight homers. All of this without many games played from Buxton. That’s a pretty solid young lineup.
The data is all fixed now, and everything should be back to normal. Sorry about the relatively lame Daily Notes today, I’ll try to do better tomorrow… but I can’t promise that becaaauuuseee I stupidly scheduled a dentist appointment for the morning. It’ll be my first time at the dentist since 2018, so I expect that blood will be shed.
Big Tuesday in baseball! I’ll be back with another DFS preview.
