Week Two NFL DFS Breakdown Is Live! Tons of new tools and data available for fantasy football bro’s over there at FTM FF.
The Streamers post is just going right here. Let’s do that. In my home league (weekly H2H), we always say the week doesn’t start until Friday, which isn’t true at all. The week starts on Monday. But it means something. Is there a word for a phrase that isn’t true but that gets at a truth?
The point is that the score of your matchup (in categories leagues, at least) doesn’t tell you much about what the final score will be. The Friday-Sunday sample is three days, but probably 50% of the total week, since every team plays all three of those days. Here’s what it looks like right now:
The #1 seed is my friend Paul, who is a cop in Virginia. But he traded in his nightstick for a keyboard, and now he pushes paper while the rest of the country goes to the pits. Thanks a lot, Paul. He did have a fantastic fantasy season, though. I think it was one of the best of all time. If it were me having that season, I’d know exactly where it ranks all-time. But it’s not me, so I don’t care enough to look. But I will look eventually. I have a reminder on my phone hitting me every afternoon that says update the league history file. I have this Google Sheet with the result of every matchup we’ve played back to 2008. I update it once a year, and I need to do it this year. When I do that, I’ll know how good Paul’s season was. But for now, we don’t care.
The #4 seed is my guy Colin. I roomed with him in college. He won the football league last year, shout out to him. And last year in baseball,
he got bounced in the first round by the eventual champion (shout out to ME). I think that’s going to happen again to Colin.
The #3 seed is the famous stupid ass Clint, and he’s up against Producer Lee. You loyal readers know these names well. Lee has been in every single football and baseball league we have played since 2007 and he has never won a championship. We’ll hit 40 total seasons soon, and the guy has never won. It’s unbelievable. I mean you could play this life over 1,000 times and I’m not sure Lee ever goes 0/37 or whatever he’s done again. In some ways, you really want him to get one. But in other ways (and much more strong ways in my heart), you want this streak to continue so we can keep talking about it. But Producer Lee did have a beautiful baby boy last December, which turns a page in life. So it would be fitting to get him on the board this year. I don’t know who I’m rooting for, I’ll let you know when I figure it out.
All of that is to say that this is a monumental weekend in the head-to-head fantasy baseball scene. And I feel like I haven’t been there for it. I’ve been so freakin’ busy with my main job, helping at the school, and with some travel stuff. Last weekend I went to Pittsburgh to meet new babies, and this weekend I go back for a funeral. My grandfather passed. He was 98! It’s almost a bit poetic to see new life and to see the end of life in back-to-back weekends like that. You can celebrate both, I think. Seeing new life is obviously one of the most spiritual experiences you have. I don’t know if that’s the right way to say it. But you know what I mean. We tend to kind of veer away from dealing with death in our culture. Fortunately, we don’t get exposed to it very often. I mean, in ancient times, it was just normal. You’d be seeing people die all the time for all kinds of reasons, and it’d be right in your face because they just didn’t have the things we have now that keep death as pleasant and clean as possible.
I think that’s had a negative effect on us. If you don’t have to face death, you’re less likely to ask yourself those big questions. Do you think about your own death? Or do you just ignore it and let one of the bajillion distractions we have in our lives help you out of the discomfort that thought produces? Death isn’t something you have to fear. There’s a way to defeat it. And I think you know what I believe that is! But let’s get to these weekend streaming options for those of you who don’t plan to die today and still want to win a fantasy baseball championship.
JT Ginn vs. CIN
Shane Baz at CHC
Mitch Keller at WSH
Ginn and Tonic has 20 strikeouts in his last three starts with a 2.16 JA ERA. He has that really nice sinker, and that makes me like him for what he’s worth as a streamer. I don’t think he’ll ever be an SP3 or SP4 for fantasy, but the sinker can play. And this matchup is nice. The Reds are downright poopy with a .688 road OPS this year (.651 in the second half).
The Cubs aren’t a very tough matchup right now. Tucker is on the IL, PCA had his blue hair powers run out months ago. This is a club with a .690 OPS in the second half. You can fire up Baz. But never trust him.
And then Mitch Keller gets a very nice matchup with the Nats. He’s in fine form with a 3.56 JA ERA and a 14.7% K-BB% in his last 12 starts. That’s what I’ve got for tonight.
Yu Darvish vs. COL
Max Scherzer vs. BAL
Parker Messick vs. CWS
Bubba Chandler vs. WSH
Darvish is kinda mid. But a non-awful 16% K-BB% and 3.44 JA ERA on the year. And you know well what these home matchups with the Rockies can do for you!
The Scherzinator has a 3.14 JA ERA on the year with a 16.7% K-BB%. The slider is still good (20% SwStr%), bu the fastball gets bombed (.374 xwOBA). But look. If he pitches well tomorrow, he’ll pitch well tomorrow.
Parker Messick now has a 3.27 JA ERA in his four big league starts. The K% has fallen down to 19%, but he throws a lot of strikes with a 3.1% BB% and 33.5% Ball%.
The White Sox are not the auto-stream matchup they used to be, but I think Messick can have some success in this spot.
And then Bubba Chandler, oh Bubba Chandler. He got whacked in his last start, giving up nine earnies on nine hits on a 3:3 K:BB in 2.2 innings against the Brewers. He has a 7.36 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP in his 14.2 big league innings. If he wasn’t a highly touted prospect, we would be running for the hills. But we do know that he has the stuff to succeed. So maybe he’ll luck into a good command day and take advantage of the Nats. But I wouldn’t feel very good about it.
Cade Cavalli vs. PIT
Luis Morales vs. CIN
Will Warren at BOS
Caden Dana at SEA
Slade Cecconi vs. CWS
Yoendrys Gomez at CLE
Decent options on Sunday! To think that your fantasy season might come down to streaming Luis Morales and Cade Cavalli. Oh boy, what a game.
Cavalli has a 13.1% SwStr% and 34% Ball% this year. I like what he’s doing. He adds a 49% GB%. The JA ERA comes in at a “not great but not awful” 3.65. He can beat the Pirates, though.
Luis Morales is the second guy. He sports a 24% K% and a 9% BB%. That gets to the 15% K-BB% threshold we sometimes require. The 3.48 JA ERA is fine. The 33% GB% pitching in Sacramento makes you nervous, but we have already mentioned the poor hitting of the Reds. They really don’t have much power.
Hope that all helps! I guess we’ll know on Sunday. The proof of the pudding is in the tasting. The proof of the streaming is in the box scoresing.
I was strucketh by seeing that Jackson Merrill hit his 11th homer of the year last night. He was a second-round pick this year, and we have him with 11 homers and one steal this year. Super duper yikes!
Maybe he’s hurt. I mean he has been hurt this year. Maybe he’s never been healthy. And/or, maybe he just way over-performed last year.
To think he can almost won the ROY over Paul Skenes! Maybe he didn’t almost win, but they were somewhat neck-and-neck. The HR% has dropped 1.4 points and the SB Attempt% has dropped 12 points. What’s he doing bro!
And Elly De La Cruz has just 19 homers. That’s in 635 PAs. You can’t blame injury in this case. And only 34 steals to boot!
Bobby Witt Jr. is another somewhat disappointing first round pick. This guy went #2 in almost all drafts.
Not that a 21-35 season (and counting) with a .294 batting average is anything to sneeze at. I don’t understand that saying. Why would you sneeze at something just because it’s underwhelming or disappointing? You don’t really control your own sneezes. Is that even a real saying or did I make it up?
Only four players have gone 20-20 with a .270+ average this year.
→ Witt 21-35-.294
→ J Ram 28-37-.283
→ Buxton 31-22-.275
→ Tucker 22-25-.270
Some of these surprising names that weren’t far off that elite trio:
→ Jeremy Pena 15-20-.300
→ George Springer 28-16-.297
→ Maikel Garcia 16-22-.290
→ Brice Turang 18-8-.289
→ Geraldo Perdomo 18-25-.284
The Brice Turang power surge will be talked about for decades. Or at a few months as we prep for 2026.
Let’s take a look at some more recent power+speed surgers. We can use the beautiful HR% vs. SB Att% plot on the MLB & MiLB Stats Dashboard v5, which I have just gone ahead and improved!
To show that in table form
→ Since August 1
→ 100+ PA
→ SB Att > 20%
→ PA/HR < 26
WHOOPS I left Simpson, Teodoslo, and Mangum there. They haven’t homered, which leaves their PA/HR blank, so it doesn’t filter out. Let’s fix it:
Look at Dansby Swanson having a sneaky season. Lil 22-15 with a .245/.298/.418 slash line. Nothing great, but probably a nice value for how you acquired him.
Austin Martin is all over the place in these notes today. He’s now hitting .290/.381/.380 with a homer in 118 PAs. Not much POP, but he’s piling up hits.
Mookie Betts has a +.155 xwOBA OE in the last 15 days. He’s your hottest hitter by that metric on the Streamlit app.
Remember when he got sick in Japan and lost 190 pounds? Maybe it just took him five months to kick it. I’ve said it before, but it feels like it’s all coming together just in time for the Dodgers. Things were looking questionable in early August, but this could be a team to cruise to another World Series. The hitters are hitting, and the pitchers are standing upright and breathing normally.
How about the season Kevin Gausman has put up!
He has been big time in the second half. He leads the league in innings pitched with a 2.25 ERA and a 0.74 WHIP.
He is an SP2 by the player rater’s grading. He ranks #13 in the 5x5 roto player rater I have running.
And he’s #1 over the last 30 days.
And there you go! That was an actually decent edition of the daily notes.
