MLB Daily Notes - September 12th

My appreciation of my kids, which I wrote about yesterday, was put to the test last night. Young Trea Baby is sick and did not sleep hardly at all and was in our bed saying “Mommy!” all night. So that was rough. Today, my appreciation vision cone shifts to my wife. She handles the kids with inhuman levels of love and patience. It is nothing short of amazing. She is like a 190 on the wMom+ scale.
I continue to improve the main MLB dashboards. I have shifted my focus to the MLB & MiLB Stats Dashboard. This is the one that has box score data from all levels dating back to 2021. I try to at least fake modesty, but I am so proud of these dashboards that it’s hard for me not to just come out and say that I think they are the greatest baseball analysis resources on the Internet. Here’s what the pitching one looks like right now, once again using the Skenesinator as the example.
You can choose years, date ranges, and what level (minors or Majors) to show, and it gives you all of that. There is a lot more to add - I’m thinking of some bar plots in the bottom right; there can’t be any white space!
The thing that is most unique is the ability to go look at minor league pitchers. You want to see what Jackson Jobe is up to this year?
Right there, on one page, you see his season stats, his stats going back to 2021, his game log, the breakdown of minors vs. Majors, and the details of each minor league level as well. It’s just such a pretty thing to look at. I might even order some prints and frame them and hang them right by my bed.
Pitcher Review
Casey Mize went for the 7:0 K:BB against the Rockies, but was poopy otherwise.
4.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 7 K, 0 BB
I streamed him in for Luis Castillo in the subscriber league semifinal here. I’m pretty sure I’m going down. My competitor has Sale & Skubal, and it’s a 16-team league, so his team is very strong - and mine is not. If I lose, I would have to call that extremely unfair and unlucky.
In case you didn’t any more proof that Bobby Miller doesn’t have it:
4.1 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 2 K, 4 BB
He has no command this year. He is one of just ten SPs with 12+ starts and a ball rate above 39%. And that is not a good list of pitchers.
Birdsong, Quintana, McKenzie, Hudson, Gibson, Miller, Gil, Munoz, Stroman, Hicks
It doesn’t matter how good your pitches are if you can’t throw them in decent locations.
Jordan Wicks gave up four dingers in the first inning to the Dodgers last night. So that was impressive.
The most interesting thing to happen yesterday was certainly Bowden Francis once again. He took a no-hitter into the ninth and lost it to a solo home run from Francisco Lindor. This is one of the wildest box score lines I’ve seen in my life.
8 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 K, 1 BB
That means Francis recorded 23 non-strikeout outs. That’s the first start since my database began in 2021, with:
→ 8+ IP
→ Less than 2 Hits
→ Less than 2 Strikeouts
Here are the details on all 24 of the balls he allowed in play yesterday:
The first 23 had an average expected batting average of .144. The soft contact was certainly there - this wasn’t the luckiest start ever made.
Francis has turned himself into an ace this year, almost out of nowhere. He has done that by ramping up the splitter usage.
We first saw the usage of the pitch spike on June 15th, since then:
71 IP, 6 W, 2.29 ERA, 0.74 WHIP, 22.6% K%, 4.5% BB%
And he really ramped up the pitch in late July. Over these last eight starts:
54 IP, 5 W, 1.83 ERA, 0.54 WHIP, 25% K%, 3.1% BB%
The splitter in these last 54 innings:
→ 11.6% SwStr%
→ 44% Strike%
→ 41% Ball%
→ 44% GB%
→ .197 xwOBA
→ .083 AVG
→ .083 SLG
It has not been much of a whiff-generator, but it has been impossible to barrel up. He has not allowed an extra-base hit on the pitch. Here’s the pitch modeling data by start, although we don’t have yesterdays data yet.
My take on Francis is to start him the rest of the year, but let somebody buy high on him in drafts next year. One of my general rules is not to put too much trust in a splitter guy. It’s a volatile pitch, and Francis doesn’t have overpowering stuff to go around it. I could see him really falling off in a hurry here.
My real-life job is absolutely killing me today; they’ve finally caught up to me - so I’ve gotta go.
