Check out yesterday’s box scores here
Tristan Peters is my hero today. I am in the finals (head-to-head categories) and going up against a two-start week from Gavin Williams. That guy was cruising into the sixth, and then Tristan Peters took an 18-pitch walk to get Gavin out of there, taking away his quality start and any hope of a win. Beautiful stuff from Peters.
An 18-pitch plate appearance was the most since 2020. So that’s the most in the entire history of the sport, in my book. Baseball history begins in 2021 to me. That’s the data I use for projections; that’s as far back as the data goes on my dashboards, so to me, the world started in 2021. I moved at the end of 2020; my firstborn son was born right at the beginning of 2021. So nothing happened before 2021 to me. Except for the things I did that I’m proud of; those still happened.
Jonah Tong - 6.0IP 4H 0ER 1R 6K 1BB
Pretty nice outing from Tong against the Orioles! 13 whiffs, 15.7% SwStr%, 31.3% Ball%. Just four hits, no homers. The pitch mix stuff from last night:
Four-seamer worked, changeup was great again. And a 56% GB%! His two starts since returning now:
Really encouraging stuff from the young Mets righty. He’s someone you could start this coming weekend; there’s been a lot of good in these two starts. He’s given up just two homers in 21 MLB innings now, which was the main thing I wanted to watch from him this year.
Kade Anderson - 4.33IP 7H 5ER 5R 5K 0BB
Back to being bad, and this was against the Angels. The good news here:
15.3% SwStr%
30.6% Ball%
5:0 K:BB
But he got hit hard again (.354 xwOBA), and that’s two in a row. The K-BB% for his MLB career is now 12.1%, and he has a 3.95 JA SIERA, which is bad. Lots of work to be done for Kade.
Corbin Burnes - 4.67IP 5H 5ER 5R 4K 0BB
He threw 75 pitches and got 14 whiffs on a 36% Ball%. So there are some good things to take from this one. He’s mostly built back up and could throw 85+ pitches next time. It’s bad that he gave up five runs, but just five hits and zero walks shows that it wasn’t a disaster start.
He’s at a 14.4% SwStr%, 37% Ball%, and .299 xwOBA through two outings now. I think you could probably add the guy for the final week and a half here if you wanted, I’m surprised at how quickly he’s gotten up to a 5+ inning workload potential.
Tarik Skubal - 7.0IP 3H 0ER 0R 9K 1BB
One of the better starts from Skubal in his new uniform. 9:0 K:BB against the Reds, 15.6% SwStr%, 32.2% Ball%.
Quinn Mathews - 6.67IP 4H 1ER 1R 8K 2BB
Really, really good start from one-T Mathews. 15 whiffs, 15.2% SwStr%, 38.4% Ball%. Just the two walks and a career-high eight strikeouts. Updated stats for him:
Still struggling overall with that 12.5% K-BB% and 45.9% Strike%, but has not gotten hit hard with just a .237 xBA, .289 xwOBA, and three homers allowed.
Granted, this was a super soft matchup against the Giants. Rafael Devers is done for the year, leaving this as their lineup:
So it’s full streams ahead against San Fran for the rest of the year. They keep starting guys I’ve never heard of. Bandura, who is that?
At least the Giants are doing their best to expand our knowledge of the player pool.
Reid Detmers - 6.0IP 7H 3ER 3R 8K 1BB
95 pitches, they are not shutting him down. Not his best work but still another quality start and eight more strikeouts. 22% K-BB% now this year with a 2.68 JA SIERA.
Nick Lodolo - 7.0IP 3H 4ER 4R 4K 4BB
Better result than expected from Lodolo vs. LAD. But still, a 4:4 K:BB. He has an 18.2% K% in the Majors this year with a 9.7% BB% and 1.8 HR/9. He’s been bad, and continues to be so. Very little encouraging data in the profile for him this year. Reds fans just have to hope that he’s pitching hurt or something. The blister stuff kinda ruined the first part of his year, so maybe that’s still lingering in some regard. That’s something to cope with, at least.
Troy Melton - 2.67IP 5H 2ER 2R 3K 4BB
Melton has been awful for awhile now. His last six starts: 5.58 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, 14.6% K%, 6.9% BB%, 1.5 HR/9.
There was plenty of hype on him early when he was posting a 1.75 ERA through his first 67 innings. That was with a weaker 15% K-BB% and super low HR/FB, though. It was pretty easy to see the regression coming, but that’s hit while he’s also just pitched worse. So it’s been rough for Melton. And I guess I won’t be full-fading him next year now because he’s going to end up being pretty cheap after this horrible end to the season.
Casey Mize - 5.0IP 8H 2ER 2R 0K 2BB
Zero strikeouts in Coors. But he held it together through five to get the win as the Padres scored for him. That game did get close, but the Padres bullpen did their normal thing and preserved the big win for San Diego in their playoff push.
Mize had two whiffs and now has a 13% K% as a Padre.
Gavin Williams - 5.0IP 4H 2ER 2R 7K 3BB
Didn’t turn out great, as we talked about already, but 21 more whiffs for Gavin against the White Sox. 18.6% SwStr%, 7:3 K:BB.
Seven different swipe-and-pipes:
Javier Sanoja continues his assault. He’s been one of the best fantasy players in the league for the last month. He tripled, homered, and stole a bag last night. Since August 15th: .358/.398/.604, 1.002 OPS, 5 HR, 5 SB. Ridiculous stuff, and you can use that guy in your RP spot if you ever want to do something for the giggles.
He is #1 on my league’s RP player rater over the last 30 days:
Very funny stuff.
Kyle Tucker just needed Ohtani to get out of the way, I guess. Smacking the ball in September with four homers, three steals, an a .898 OPS. He’s still hitting just .214 but slugging .571 so he’s doing good things and looks ready to earn some of his money when it matters most this October.
PCA now has 42 homers and 37 steals. I’m sure he’ll prioritize getting to that 40-40 plateau. His stolen-base attempt rate is the highest it’s been all season in September.
You see it every year. Someone has a 30-30 or 40-40 or 50-50 in sight, and they just start stealing more bases to try to get there.
Jordan Lawlar is also on the list. He’s played sparingly, but continues to do good things for the D’Backs.
Very encouraging season for Lawlar, even though he had more injuries this year. K% is down to 27%, OPS is up to .795, he’s ready for a breakout next season if he can finally get a healthy season in.
Jakob Marsee scored 27 points. He’s been crushing again of late.
Big old 1.040 OPS in September with two homers and a steal. Not running as much in the latter part of this year with the attempt rates under 15% in each of the last three months, but he’s hitting for average and getting some balls out of the yard.
Not much I like, but if you’re looking for daily options, I’ll try to help you.
