Ethan Salas hit the first two homers of his career last night. He’s a 20 year old Padres catcher who has been on prospects list since he was a teenager. People were talking about this guy as a 16-year-old, which is always wild. But it might seem like the prospect window is closing since we’ve known about him so long without seeing him. But he turned 20 in June, and he should get a full shot to be the Padres catcher next year.
So far in the bigs: .143/.143/.524, 2 HR, 3 R, 3 RBI
So he’s played sparingly behind Luis Campusano, but showed some of that power he’s added this year in Coors last night.
The only things we can really look at in 21 PAs worth of data is maybe his bat speed, which isn’t good. He’s probably a defense-first catcher for now while he develops. And by develops, we might even mean like natural physical development. It’s crazy to be a professional athlete at the highest level when you’re 20. You know what I was doing when I was 20? I was an acne-faced Waynesburg University computer science student playing tennis and writing a Pirates blog. It was awesome.
Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his 43rd and 44th homers of the year. He and Bregman smashed together again. Bregman was a single shy of the cycle and the Cubs added 12 hits and eight runs to their tally.
Ridiculous season for PCA, who is going to be your consensus #1 pick next year.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand, aka Pete Alonso lite, hit a bomb and added three runs and two RBI to his interesting season. He’s up to .277/.326/.520 with an .846 OPS. Ten homers, a steal, a 27.3% K%.
The Orioles need some left-handed bats if this is going to come together. CES has most of his power against lefties, Coby Mayo is the best hitter in the league against lefties, but the busto seasons from Gunnar and Holliday have them being without much thump against righties. Great season for CES who might have just hit himself into a real MLB contract, so I’m happy for that guy.
Two steals from Josh Naylor! There were 31 steals last night, which seems like a lot to me. I’m not sure if that is a lot, though. There were a lot in my head to head semifinal match, and that’s the lens I am looking at baseball through this week.
Naylor has THIRTY steals again.
So last year he decided to run a bunch, and since then he has a near 90% success rate and 60 steals.
2025-2026 60 Steals Club
Simpson 86
Caballero 81
Witt Jr. 80
Jose Ramirez 77
Crow-Armstrong 72
Chisholm Jr. 71
Tatis Jr. 67
Oneil Cruz 65
Elly De La Cruz 63
Josh Naylor 60
One of those names is not like the others! But Naylor has hit just ten homers this year and slugged .365. So his best attribute for fantasy leagues is steals, and who could’ve seen that coming?
Tommy White hit his third homer. We thought he’d be kind of a homer-or-bust guy, but that’s not been the case. He’s hit for a decent .259 average and struck out just 16% of the time. But he doesn’t take walks (2.3%) and has a .275 OBP with a .343 SLG. So not great signs there for White. He also has a 101.3 EV90 on fly balls, which is terrible. So I don’t think the “Tommy Tanks” nickname was the proper one. His bat speed is below average. Maybe I just had a misconception of him when he was coming up.
Jakob Marsee hit another bomb and stole a base, he’s been a game-changer lately as we’ve mentioned. Since August:
→ .308/.416/.515, 5 HR, 4 SB, 15.5% K%, 12.3% BB%
Pretty, pretty good for Jakob after a really bad first few months.
Jonah Cox stole two bases, he’s been very good for that since coming up. He’s swiped 13 bags in 53 games with a 50% attempt rate and a 76% success rate. He’s hit .294/.333/.445 to boot, so he’s someone to consider if you’re looking or late-season desperation steals. He’s playing every day.
Samuel Basallo hit his 18th homer. He’s hit .227/.292/.417 in this rookie campaign, so another underwhelming showing for a top Orioles prospect. A 26.6% K% is fine, though. It’s a 12.5% Brl% with plenty of bat speed and EV. Good buy-low next year as he’s gotten through this rookie year. We’re always looking for those 2nd or 3rd year breakout former top prospects, he’ll certainly be on that list next year. But the Orioles now have a pretty checkered past of developing these guys.
The best thing that happened to Basallo this year was probably the Adley Rutschman trade; that was a vote of confidence for Basallo in some regards, and he’ll get a long look the rest of this year and next to see if he can do enough against MLB pitching for that power to manifest.
The best story of yesterday was Tommy Pham allegedly talking to the White Sox brass in an elevator and convincing them to activate him for the game. They listened to him, hit him clean-up, and he hit a three-run homer, which was just funny. BUT the White Sox lost a very important game as the bullpen struggled. Pham’s played 11 games and has hit .056/.105/.222. That was his first hit of the year, but it was at a good time, I guess, and another funny story to add to Pham’s very interesting career.
Not many 38-year-olds who haven’t gone for an OPS above .775 in the last six years keep getting playing time. This guy is an excellent example of finding a way to get jobs you don’t seem to deserve.
The highlights from yesterday:
Logan Henderson: 5.0IP 6H 3ER 3R 8K 1BB
Parker Messick: 6.0IP 7H 3ER 3R 8K 0BB
Shota Imanaga: 6.0IP 4H 1ER 1R 8K 0BB
Jared Jones: 5.0IP 7H 3ER 3R 9K 1BB
Carlos Rodon: 6.0IP 4H 2ER 2R 5K 3BB
Zebby Matthews: 6.0IP 2H 0ER 0R 8K 2BB
Matthew Liberatore: 6.0IP 6H 1ER 1R 2K 3BB
Jared Jones has now struck out 26 in his last three outings with four walks. He got lit up seven starts ago, but has found a real groove since then. Six starts, 2.56 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 33.6% K%, 9.2% BB%. That looks like a potential breakout ace next year. The most important thing for anybody coming off Tommy John is just making starts on schedule and showing improvement as they build back up. Jones still has a 3.95 ERA for his season but a 21.2% K-BB% and 1.1 HR/9. So I’m fully on board for next year. His stuff is among the best in the league and it’s playing very well for the last 1.5 months.
Matthew Liberatore has had a bunch of outings with a high strikeout total but a bunch of hits and runs allowed. Last night it was the opposite. A quality start with two strikeouts and three walks. Probably the most annoying pitcher for fantasy this year.
Blake Snell got hurt. It was groin tightness, so something bad has happened to the Dodgers this month. I guess that’s the second thing since Ohtani is also on the IL for the first time in forever. It might be nothing, obviously they were going to be very careful with any injury stuff popping up with him and Glasnow. But you don’t love to see it if you’re a Dodgers fan, and that early exit probably crushed some fantasy teams in their championship match.
There are no streamers I can recommend for today on a lighter slate of MLB action. If you’re super desperate, though, maybe Seth Lugo vs. HOU? Maybe Jeffrey Springs in Tampa? Pretty gross options, but that’s what I have for you.
Tomorrow:
That’s the runaway top option, and probably one of the better streams of the weekend.
Saturday: Christian Scott vs. PHI, Robert Gasser vs. BAL
Sunday: Dean Kremer vs. LAA, Corbin Burnes vs. NYY, David Peterson vs. CIN, Jonah Tong vs. PHI, Quinn Mathews vs. WSH
