Hey Cole Ragans is back! Just in time, right? He threw 62 pitches and lasted just 3.2 inings but did generate a nice 21% SwStr%. These are the sort of “buy lows” I’ve always liked for the next year. The ace pitcher who misses most of the year but returns healthy at the end of the year. You get to see that they’re healthy, and then they get the whole offseason to do what they need to do.
I haven’t seen much of Brandon Woodruff lately. But he pops up at the top of the lists today. He was strong last night:
5 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 9 SO, 0 BB
His season:
12 GS, 64.2 IP, 3.20 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 32.3% K%, 5.4% BB%
The profile:
A 27% K-BB% is insane, and you see the 1.91 JA ERA. The four-seamer sits at 93mph, but has been dominant with an 18.1% SwStr% and a 59% Strike! It’s surprising, but convincing. Only nine four-seamers have above a 58% Strike% on 250+ pitches this year:
Trevor Rogers also there… insane.
The Brewers are heading to the playoffs, and they might end up being a pretty tough out.
My head is moving towards the postseason now. I’m ready for some playoff baseball. Last year was a lot of fun. I’m pretty pumped to get some of those super meaningful weekday afternoon games and those beautiful four-game slates that span across the day with so much on the line.
All of this did make me realize that I don’t have a good team pitching dashboard on the main MLB dash. That is insane, what a blunder. It’s there now:
We don’t typically care about team pitching as a whole when playing fantasy. We usually just focus on the opposing starter for that day. But if we’re interested in seeing which teams will actually win games (something I usually don’t care about!), we should know what teams have nice pitching staffs as a whole. Let’s check on things since August 1st:
If I’m picking the World Series right now, I would have said Dodgers vs. Mariners even before seeing this. These teams are rolling. Whizzing. Dominating.
Since August 1st, the Dodgers are #6 in xwOBA (offense) and the Mariners are tenth. So they’re both top third in the league offensively with the two best pitching staffs in the league.
The problem is that I have literally never gotten a World Series projection right. But there’s always a first.
To further hype the Dodgers, Blake Snell struck out a dozen last night in seven innings. A 12:2 K:BB. He has a 2.98 JA ERA with a 29% K% and a 10.4% BB% this year. He might be the main reason the Dodgers walk to the World Series. He’s one of the best in the league when he’s going right. They’ve also got Yoshinobu Yamamoto absolutely rolling.
Four pitchers with a JA ERA under 2.5 in 6+ starts. Devastating stuff.
But you might not care about that right now if you’re still reading. You’re probably trying to grind through one more week in your fantasy league. Butt pucker weekend is coming. There is no higher level of butt pucker than the last couple days of a head to head fantasy baseball championship. I’ve experienced it, and honestly it’s awful. The de-pucker after you win is worth all of it, but that Sunday when you’re sweating every AB because you’re down 0.003 points in batting average or 0.10 in ERA… just brutal stuff to go through. And you get no support from your wife or girlfriend. They’ll never understand. I feel like those of us who have gone through that an come out of it should get a purple heart or something.
Here’s the SP Planner for today. It’s not a good streaming day.
But I do remind you that JT Ginn has been good lately.
He’s a landmine-type pitcher. You can get good starts, but you can also get pretty bad ones. The game being in Boston is a good thing. I don’t think the Red Sox lineup is one to be super afraid of right now. I’d go for it, but that’s easy for me to say since my butt is not puckered.
Someone asked me about starting Tanner Gordon in Coors. I don’t know about that one. This is a kid with an 8.9% SwStr% and a 3.85 JA ERA with a .498 SLG allowed. The Rockies are still a fine matchup even in Coors, but not for someone who allows this many balls in play.
Tomorrow looks gross as well. If Brandon Sproat is available, that’s where I’d be going. Mitch Keller against the Athletics at home is also nice. Those are the two I’d attack.
On Saturday:
There will be a lot to say about Chad Patrick this offseason. Maybe it will just be me saying things about him. He is one of those surprising standouts in the count dominance metric. He has a 19.4% count dominance. I never wrote a standalone article for that, so I’ll explain it again.
This is the percentage of the time you take a batter to 0-2 minus the percentage of the time you take him to 3-0. The league average is 17.3%. Here are the leaders:
Patrick’s mark is 19.4%. Well above the league average. He’s above Missy and Peralta.
Maybe Patrick will even open some eyes in the playoffs. Although I don’t know if he’ll be the SP3 or SP4 in the postseason. But I think he’s interesting.
I’m keeping the criteria pretty loose in case some people are looking for a streamer bat or two for this slate.
I will go ahead and publish this.
Reminder that if you’re into fantasy football, I’m doing a lot of unique fantasy football stuff over here, and I’ll continue to add through the season.
