All I have for you today is a new Tableau dashboard that I whipped up this morning to show team win percentages by date. I did this because of this insane collapse we’ve seen from the Tigers.
The Tigers went from a double-digit lead in the division not long ago to potentially missing the playoffs. Skubal just pitched last night, so they ahve a few tougher games to win ahead. That does set up Skubal for a Sunday start if they need it, but things are rough in Tiger land right now.
Since August 1st, Tigers hitters:
Nobody is even near an .800 OPS. This isn’t exactly shocking. We here never thought the Tigers offense was good. But it’s a bit surprising to see Greene slugging just .407. And nobody else has picked up the slack.
Tigers pitchers:
Skubal is pretty much all alone on this team. None of the other usual starters for them have kept an ERA under 4.50. Rough stuff. This is a bad team.
It’s not as though the Guardians are a ton better roster-wise, but they’re playing good ball right now.
Gavin Williams has been their ace with a 2.10 ERA over their last nine starts, but it’s a mediocre 14.8% K-BB% along with it.
Messick has been their best pitcher in a smaller sample size with a beautiful 2.08 ERA. The 1.30 WHIP is shocking to see with his 18.3% K-BB%. So you could say he’s even been a bit unlucky.
If you check the pitcher luck tab on the dashboard, you can see some of the luck metrics. There you will see that Messick has given up a .371 BABIP since August 1st, but he’s survived the damage with a lower 17.5% RISP H%.
That’s the second-highest BABIP allowed since 8/1 (5 GS minimum).
So it will be an interesting finish to the AL Central race. Personally, I don’t think any of those teams should be in the playoffs! But I’m pumped up for some three-game Wild Card series next week.
I got back into DFS yesterday and I tried to win $50,000 but I ended up not winning $50,000. So I wanted to go ahead and let you guys know about that. Maybe I’ll try it again today.
The big baseball news yesterday was that the ABS system is coming to the game next year. Teams will be able to challenge balls and strikes until they’ve lost two challenges. So that’s fine. But if everybody agrees that it’s a good thing, why not make that like five? It doesn’t take long to check it right?
I just don’t like it when people stand in the middle of the road. Everybody in our world is always trying to play both sides and get the best of both worlds, and that’s impossible. If you stand in the middle of the road, you’ll get hit by a truck.
But maybe I’m being too idealistic. Maybe the right way is to slowly move toward your ultimate goal so as not to create too big of shockwaves. There’s an umpires union that needs to be catered too and whatnot. And who knows, maybe there are some unforeseen circumstances coming.
The more I think about it, the more I realize my initial reaction was wrong. Don’t you hate that?
It did remind me of that screwed K thing I came up with early on this year. There’s this BAD CALL ANALYSIS tab on the main dashboard. This looks at the times where an umpire called a ball a strike and it does some calculating to find out which hitters have been most affected by that.
A “screwed K” is any strikeout that happens while one of the there strikes should not have been a strike. There are two players tied for the most this year with 26. Wyatt Langford and Carlos Correa.
There’s also a column for “stolen strikes”. This is how many strikes they’ve taken that should have been called balls:
I can’t really see a common thread running through those names. There are some short players on there, but I think this is all pretty close to completely random.
The only way this could be close to useful for us in fantasy is to see which hitters could expect fewer strikeouts next year if they get fewer bad calls. The way I’ve decided to quantify that is by dividing the “true strikeouts” by the “actual strikeouts”. So that takes the number of strikeouts minus the number of screwed strikeouts and divides it by the number of actual strikeouts they have on their stat sheet this year. Here’s the result:
So it’s Correa at the top, and then a mixture of younger or weaker hitters. Maybe umpires are less afraid of getting punched in the face or something with Chase Meidroth and Adam Frazier are at the plate, so they’re more likely to lean towards the pitcher.
But you could maybe project a lower K% next year for these names because they’re likely to not have the same bad call luck (especially being able to challenge now).
Flip it around the other way:
Mickey Moniak was on that weird poll earlier this year about what player other players would most want to play with. It was like Ohtani, Judge, Trout, Witt Jr., Skenes, and then Moniak.
And it turns out that umpires like Mickey Moniak quite a bit, too. Maybe he just has dirt on everybody.
You could also note that the top three players here are all WWWHHHHHHIIIIITE GUYS! So if that fits your cultural narrative, I encourage you to use it.
But I mean, remember that the guys on the other side were Chase, Eric, Adam, and Steven. Pretty white on both sides.
But that’s today’s daily notes! We’re just six days away from the playoffs beginning, so I’m doing my best to get re-juiced for it. Talk to you later.
for now, check out my fantasy football stuff here.
