Took my three kids and their bikes to a skatepark yesterday, and it was great. There was the big bowl thing on one side, but half of it was just a “street skating” park with manageable bumps, rails, and stuff. So they could cruise around that. I think that’s the right terminology, but I’ll admit that I haven’t been in the skateboarding scene since like 2015, when Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater was all the rage. That’s one of the better video games of all time, and I won’t hear any disagreement on it.
My four-year-old boy especially loves being on the bike, and he is impressive on that thing. He’s already doing those sweet skid stops when you jam on the brakes real quick and it makes that noise. He’s sick. No fear at all, he was just ripping around the hills and ramps and stuff. I’m not saying he was catching air or doing tailwhips or anything, but it was awesome to watch. And nobody got hurt.
There was this other kid there trying to do a 360 on his bike in the bigger bowl. So he’d go down the steep part of the bowl, and launch off the other side, trying to spin and land on the flat part above. And for the first like dozen tries I saw he was barely turning at all. He was hardly even doing a “90”. But at the end, this kid nutted up and did it. A full 360, and he landed it. He screams “I DID IT!! DID YOU SEE THAT!?”. And there was nobody else there, so I guessed he was talking to me. So I said “YEAH BUDDY THAT WAS SICK!”. I’ve never seen a young man be so proud of himself; it was touching. I didn’t actually see the 360, I just lied so I could participate in the joy. And then my daughter called me on it she was like “you didn’t really see him, were you just being nice?”. So she learned a lesson about it being okay to lie as long as you’re being nice, I guess.
Most of my best friends in high school were skaters. So I spent a lot of time following them around on my bike and watching them to do kickflips and stuff for hours. I think that’s a pretty great way to spend your teenage years. It’s a ton of work, it’s hard, it takes a lot of time and dedication and blood and often some broken bones, but eventually you master it and you get that feeling of pride.
The funny thing is that it’s way, way, way harder to do a kickflip than it looks. Someone doing a kickflip is not very impressive at all. You wouldn’t look at that and be like “wow that kid must have practiced for 200 hours to get that down". You’re more or less just like “okay”. But that makes it even more endearing, I think.
So if my kids want to do BMX or skateboarding or something, I’ll be all about it. Might even have to try it myself. Might buy a BMX bike myself and try to go full Dave Mirra next time we go to that park.
Nick Lodolo took the Reds one game above the Diamondbacks. The Mets also won, so the Reds stay one game out of the playoffs. I did check it, and the Reds have the tiebreak over the Mets. So it’s a real close race here. The Reds have to play Milwaukee while the Mets get the Marlins. But if the Reds sweep and the Mets lose a game, the Reds are in. Too bad they’ve burned Hunter Greene and Nick Lodolo in the last two games. Lodolo was insanely good yesterday:
6.1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 12 SO, 1 BB
Lodolo has a 26.2% K-BB% in his last 11 starts. He has a 2.95 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP in that time. He’s been one of the best pitchers in the league. If the Reds can sneak into the playoffs, they’ll line up with Greene and Lodolo for the first two Wild Card games. That’s assuming they don’t throw Greene on Sunday in a must-win situation, but he would be on three days’ rest there. Chase Burns is also back from the IL and pitching out of the bullpen.
The Reds can pitch! They just don’t have a great offense. they have a bottom-12 OPS in the league, around .705. They’ve hit only 164 homers (10th-lowest).
Yoshinobu Yamamoto dominated once again. The Dodgers are a juggernaut again. Roki Sasaki was throwing gas out of the bullpen the other day, Ohtani and Snell are healthy and rolling in the rotation. Betts and Freeman have put their slumps way in the rearview. This is going to be an extremely tough team to beat, and they have to be the large favorite to win the World Series right now.

Framber Valdez had a big start.

The Astros are now five games behind the Mariners, so the division is long gone. But the Astros are chasing down whoever doesn’t win the AL Central right now. They’re a game back on the Tigers.
The problem for Houston is that both the Tigers and the Guardians have the tiebreaker over them. So they are actually two games behind, and it doesn’t matter to them who wins the division. They’ll just need whoever doesn’t win the division to lose at least two games this weekend.
But we’ve reached the final series of the year. Here are the ones relevant to the playoff picture:
Orioles vs. Yankees (AL East division race)
Rays vs. Blue Jays (AL East division race)
Tigers vs. Red Sox (AL central & wild card)
Rangers vs. Guardians (AL central & wild card)
Mets vs. Marlins (NL wild card)
Reds vs. Brewers (NL wild ard)
Astros vs. Angels (AL wild card)
D’Backs vs. Padres (NL wild card, but Arizona needs a miracle)
Should be a fun weekend, talk to you all later!
