Went to another South Bend Cubs game last night. Got to see first-round pick Vahn Lackey, who walked and struck out before we left. It was $3 beer night, so half the student population of Notre Dame was there getting rowdy. Although it did take them until the 3rd inning to get there, so that was nice. I’ve never made it past the fifth inning of one of those games with having three kids with me.
I once again used my cute little seven year old daughter to get a baseball tossed to me. That one works every single time. We got ice creams for the kids, the lady was very generous with the helping. My boys ate the whole thing so fast. So the progression of the night was wild to see.
My three year old crushed it all and then looked super sick. I was pretty sure he was going to throw up all over the people in front of us. But he got through it, then we went out to the little grass hill and they ran around and rolled all over the place. So it seemed like we survived it. But then my OTHER son (5 years old) ended up throwing up like three times in the middle of the night. Did not see that switcheroo coming. Minor league baseball is great, I just wish I could watch a few innings of the game while I’m there. Someday I will.
What I’ve learned through these years is that baseball is a really confusing game. It is hard to help a kid understand how it works and what the players are trying to do. And it’s hard to be interesting in something you don’t understand. So I’ve got a lot of work to do to get these boys interested in watching the games intently.
At least they know now that the batters are trying to hit the ball. But they think just hitting the ball is a win. They don’t really understand that you can hit the ball and still get out and then have to go sit down. And I cannot for the life of me get them to understand that left-handed hitters have a hard time hitting left-handed pitchers.
I guess Lackey did end up with a hit and two steals last night! Would’ve been nice if he could’ve done that in the first three innings!
Kevin Gausman will take it.

It’s about time for Gausman to really get going. It’s been up-and-down during the regular season for many years now, but he came up big in the postseason last year and the Cubs are hoping he can be that guy again this year.
He struck out nine Brewers last night on 14 whiffs. The splitter was there. There’s no real puzzle to figure out with Gausman. If he has the splitter command, he’s good. If he doesn’t, he’s bad.
Pretty impressive outings from Clay Holmes and Kevin Gausman this week against the Brewers in a pretty high profile series. It was a wild one.

Cal Quantrill - 7.0IP 2H 0ER 0R 5K 2BB
Things are silly right now. Quantrill has four straight quality starts and a 1.18 ERA in his last six starts. His WHIP is freakin’ 0.79 since August began.

If you’ve been starting Quantrill, Martin Perez, Kyle Leahy, Brandon Pfaadt, and Jacob Lopez in the second half, you’re rolling. Baseball, man!
Quinn Mathews - 5.0IP 4H 1ER 1R 4K 4BB
He survived it, but four walks… 12 outs on 99 pitches, and the Cardinals lost 3-2.
The Dodgers scratched out those three runs thanks to Tommy Edman and Teoscar Hernandez, who had all six of the hits.
Edman is a smash against lefties, and with Ohtani DTD, he’ll be the lead-off man.
The Cardinals put up ten hits on Tarik Skubal and 12 overall, but lost. So they doubled the Dodgers in hits and lost.
Skubal: 5.67IP 10H 2ER 2R 6K 1BB
Not too impressive. Just a 12.7% SwStr% and 35.3% Ball% for Skubal. Did not have his best stuff and the Cardinals did a good job. But they couldn’t get the big hit when they needed it.

Logan Henderson - 7.0IP 3H 2ER 2R 7K 0BB
He figured out the Cubs. He’s had a terrific season:

He’s very good. Fastball, changeup, cutter - all very good pitches. He might end up being a top 20 SP pick next year if he can stay healthy through the last two months here (including the playoffs). That’s really been the only question with Henderson.
He has a 2.32 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 108.2 MLB innings for his career now. And it’s a 25.4% K-BB%, ridiculously good stuff from a guy that doesn’t have the natural advantages of his teammate, Jacob Misiorowski.
That’s a really good 1-2 punch for the Brewers as they head into the playoffs. But can the offense score enough runs with so little home run power in the lineup? Can the bullpen hold up? It will be a fun postseason.
Hunter Brown - 6.0IP 6H 2ER 2R 7K 2BB
Looking better now. In his last two starts he has a 17:3 K:BB in 12.2 innings against the Mets and White Sox.
His Ball% is 36% over these two, which is average, but it’s a big improvement for Brown. The Astros are in first place in the division with a two game lead over the Rangers. So they’ll need Hunter Brown bad if they want to clinch that division and do anything useful in the playoffs. But I don’t see them being a big threat, that’s a pretty bad roster in my opinion.
Jake Bennett - 6.0IP 5H 3ER 3R 7K 0BB
The Orioles are struggling offensively. They nine runs in three games in Coors, and Jake Bennett looked pretty good against them last night despite a couple of homers given up. A 7:0 K:BB and 18 outs in 68 pitches. Quick hook there, I guess.
Bennett’s season now:
3.34 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 16% K-BB%, 0.81 HR/9. He’s like an Andrew Abbott type, except I guess he’s the good version of Abbott right now. But he’s not trustworthy as a guy without much in the stuff department.
And now we have to talk about Kade Anderson again, who I have given up on for redraft leagues. This was the best matchup you can get right now in Seattle against the Athletics. And he failed.

Just a 10.1% SwStr%, 34.2% Ball%, and a .353 xwOBA given up. His season marks now:
6.3% K-BB%, 11% SwStr%, 35.1% Ball%, 4.70 JA SIERA, 4.26 JA ERA.
The one thing he’s been good at is not getting hit hard. .197 xBA, .277 xwOBA, 31% Hard Hit%. That gives us some hope, but he’s not getting strikes at a good rate.
Righties have no trouble getting the ball in play against him:
As a left-handed pitcher, you’re going to to face 6+ righties almost every single time, and fastball and changeup aren’t working against them at the highest level.
Maybe he’ll get there, I’m guessing he’ll have a very nice career with the talent he has, but it’s just a dude who doesn’t have the raw stuff to compensate when he’s not hitting his spots. It turns out that it’s way harder to get MLB hitters out compared to AA. All of us fantasy analysts look pretty dumb on Kade right now, and I am among the leaders there. I hyped this dude up hugely, and I just don’t see it for the rest of this year. Very sad. I was WRONG.
Carter Jensen had the biggest day. Another homer, his third in two games. Plus a double and a triple, so that’s a big day. He’s scored 65 fantasy points in the last two days now, and his OPS is up to .758 with 22 bombs. Maybe he’s figuring it out, but that weather in KC has probably helped him a lot this week.
Adley Rutschman hit two homers against his former team. But he’s hitting .173/.270/.368 with Boston with three homers including those two from last night.
He has a .741 OPS this season (.240/.320/.421) with 11 homers. More of a defense catcher than an offensive one like we thought he’d be! He’s going to have some trouble finding DH reps in the future, and that was his main appeal for fantasy leagues over the last few years.
Julio Rodriguez cashed my DFS lineup last night with three steals and two RBI. That eclipsed another 20-20 season for J-Rod. He’s done that in all five seasons of his career now.
But his home run rate is down to 3.5% this year (4.5% last year) and he has the worst batting average of his career by far.
But 20-20 is nice! That bolsters your fantasy floor a whole bunch, and you’re very happy getting three steals in one game if you have the guy.
Zack Gelof homered off of Kade Anderson. He has had a very, very nice season for the Athletics.
.261/.328/.465 this year with 16 bombs. His K% is down to 25% after that was a major problem for him early on. So the plate discipline has gotten there and his tools are playing.
He has played just 90 games and has those 16 bombs with 11 steals.
He will be 27 soon, and we’ll see what the new Athletics ballpark does to these guys home run rates. But it’s a major win for Gelof this year who has established himself as a big leaguer.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand homered again. He has eight of those in just 140 PAs with a .269/.307/.508 slash line. A 16.8% Brl% and an 84.5% Z-Contact%.
Six of his eight homers are off lefties. He has hit .232/.256/.368 against righties, so that’s pretty tough to take. It’s tough to get good season from guys who can’t hit right-handed pitching.
Randy Arozarena is now the #6 outfielder on my player rater. He’s hit .270 this year with 22 homers and 20 steals. Such a good fantasy player, and his K% has plummeted this year.
He’s the man, I guess! But he’s subject to the home/road stuff like many Mariners are:
→ at home: .241/.349/.417, 9 HR, 19% K%
→ on road: .300/.388/.509, 13 HR, 24% K%
The huge second half for Jeff McNeil continues. He has hit .353/.381/.504 in the second half with four homers (36.5 PA/HR) and seven steals. Very good fantasy player especially with the position eligibility he has.
