Check out yesterday’s box scores here
What a ridiculous season it’s been for Rafael Devers.
He’s up to 34 homers now after hitting two in March-April. Since May began, he’s hit .270/.362/.577 with a .939 OPS and 32 bombs. That’s the third-highest OPS in the game since May (PCA and Yordan).
Devers will end up with a 35+ homer season. Only Jeff Kent, Rich Aurilia, and Barry Bonds have done that this century as a Giant. Shout out to Devers. He’s a bad defender, not a very likeable personality, but a darn good hitter.
Cal Raleigh hit his 21st homer of the season and has ten since August began. Baseball… who can understand it?
Brayan Rocchio scored 53 fantasy points in the double header. He hit a grand slam, added a second homer, drove in five, and stole two bases. So basically an entire season’s worth of Nicky Lopez’s production in one day.
Rocchio has 12 bombs and 18 steals this year now. The slash line isn’t anything special (.682 OPS):
But his home run rate has blown up this year. He hit 13 homers in his previous two seasons (158 games), and he’ll probably outdo that this year. He doesn’t hit the ball hard but he plays a lot with the ability to play at different positions, makes a ton of contact, and he air pulls it enough to sneak a ball or two out over a fence a couple times a month.
Travis Bazzana also had a nice day with a homer, two runs, and four RBI. But it’s been rough sledding for him since his initial good production when he first got the call-up.
He will be an interesting name to evaluate for next year. A former #1 overall pick. Not a ton of bat speed or EVs, but a solid plate discipline foundation and and speed to build on.
We think he can end up being a 20-20 guy, but he’s got some work to do.
T.J. Rumfield got back on the horse. He was good, and then bad, and then hurt, but he’s been pretty good again lately.
It was a 13-run game in Coors with the Cardinals winning it 7-6.
Cardinals side:
Herrera homered, Walker, Saggese, and Church stole bags. Leo Bernal hit 5th and got on base three times.
Rockies side:
Goodman-Rumfield-Carrigg-Veen give this club a core to build on for next year. Maybe we’ll see Ethan Holliday get into the mix the next couple of years, and we could have a pretty competitive offense in the future again. The pitching is a lost cause, but that’s the game they’re playing.
The 2027 Rockies Preview will be longer this time! Lots more to look at with some of these pop-up hitters from 2026.
Two bombs from Francisco Alvarez as the Mets had a nice game against the Giants and their bad pitching.
Alvarez has posted strong HR% in his career. Above 4% the last two years, but he gets hurt every year and that really limits his playing time as a catcher. The K% is also up this year, so it’s just a .731 OPS. He’s a one-category dude, I guess. The big offensive breakout might not happen for him, but he’s still not even 25 years old.
Eugenio Suarez got his American citizenship this week, changed his walk-up song to God Bless the USA, and homered. That’s a nice story. You get the warm-and-fuzzies about a guy who does it the right way and appreciates living in this great country.
The Reds didn’t treat him as well as the USA did. They waived him in late August, but nobody claimed him, so he just stayed on the team.
Since he got waived: .250/.400/.700, 1.100 OPS, 3 HR.
The guy doesn’t hold a grudge! The things you can do when you have a positive attitude.
On the pitching side, Jared Jones led the day with nine strikeouts of the Angels in a 1-0 Pirates win. 21 whiffs, 30.8% Ball%. He was cooking, finally taking advantage of a good home matchup.
It was a one-pitch show. The slider was ridiculous last night. 71% Strike%, 42.2% SwStr%. 19 of his 21 whiffs on that slider. Crazy stuff there.
I think Jones will qualify as a solid buy-low next year. His numbers this year are not good in his return from Tommy John. That can happen, and the full normal offseason should do him some good. The pitch mix:
15.4% SwStr%, 36% Ball%, .295 xwOBA. That’s good stuff. The JA SIERA is 3.01, so yeah, we like him for the future still.
The Athletics gave Logan Gilbert the business.
→ 4.67IP 8H 7ER 7R 10K 2BB
Sooo attacking this A’s matchup has been a bust. You can’t trust the Mariners, I guess.
Gelof, McNeil, and Muncy did most of the damage there.
A healthy Athletics lineup next year could be a really good unit. Kurtz + Langeliers + Soderstrom + Bolte + Gelof + Butler + McNeil (if they use their team option) is very strong.
Blake Snell - 6.0IP 5H 0ER 0R 7K 2BB
Carved ‘em up again. Since returning:
15 hits, 38 strikeouts, 12 walks, zero homer in 29 innings. He’s one of the toughest dudes to hit in the league, and he looks to be on top of his game. We’ll see Tyler Glasnow tonight. If the Dodgers can get both of those guys to the postseason healthy… we could have a postseason that the country outside of Los Angeles does not like very much.
Ryan Johnson - 6.0IP 4H 1ER 1R 6K 2BB
The Angels pitching in August has been one of the most surprising stories of the season. Johnson has a 1.67 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 16.4% K%, and 14.1% BB% in his last six starts. So that K-BB% does not match up with his run prevention.
But his delivery is super weird and probably confusing for hitters. So that’s how he’s gotten the job done. I would not count on it continuing, of course.
The cutter is pretty good, the splitter is fine, and he mixes the pitches well. Four pitches between 20% and 40% usage, there’s a path to something there, but the 44% Strike% and 38% Ball%… very ugly.
The Angels pitching since they changed their coaching staff:
They have a team 2.94 ERA since changing the coaches. Second-best in the league to the Padres. And the fourth-best K-BB%. It was that simple, I guess! Just fire the old heads and get some fresh eyes on it.
But no, there’s definitely some good luck in here. Coincidences abound, correlation is not causation! But it’s hard to believe the coaching has had nothing to do with it.
That’s all the time I have! Enjoy your college football Saturday!
