Thomas Pannone threw a perfect game in AAA yesterday, which is an incredible thing to do. He’s not a big time prospect, his season numbers are middling, and these notes are for the Major Leagues. But I thought that deserved a shout out.
The Major League dude I want to give this award to is Emmet Sheehan. Tumultuous year for him, but he came back up and showed the Dodgers what he’s still capable of. He had dominated in AAA (not surprising), and struck out ten Reds last night in his return to the bigs.
→ 5.67IP 3H 1ER 1R 10K 1BB
18 whiffs, 22% SwStr%, 57.3% Strike%. The pitch mix was the same, he just located, kept the ball in the yard, and took advantage of a Reds lineup that is not very good outside of Elly and Sal Stewart. To show what he’s done lately:
34 strikeouts and seven walks in four starts, three of those being in the minors. That probably gives him the green light to make a few more starts in the Majors as the Dodgers coast into the playoffs. Or maybe he’ll be a long relief guy or something. We’ll have to wait to see, but you could definitely stream the guy this month. I’ll remind you ONE MORE TIME that he has a 3.52 SIERA on a 20% K-BB% in the Majors this year. Huge potential there, and he’ll be a great late-round flier pick in drafts for 2027.
But really, Jesus Luzardo had the best day on the mound. His first career complete game, and it was a shutout:
9.0IP 2H 0ER 0R 12K 1BB
Cooked the Braves. 12:1 K:BB, 27 outs on 109 pitches. His season has been terrific, and he’s gotten his ERA all the way down to 3.22 now with a 1.09 WHIP. He’s thrown 178.2 innings and has 221 strikeouts. Elite pitcher is Luzardo if you can just make it through those few blow-ups that seem to happen early in the season.
Jonah Tong came out super strong in his return to the MLB mound. I was watching that game since I had Eury Perez starting in my playoff matchup. That went horribly wrong and Eury looks totally busted, but Tong was impressive for a bit:
5.0IP 4H 4ER 4R 7K 1BB
He had a rough third inning but bounced back and put up a decent start. Seven strikeouts, 16 whiffs, fastball sat at 95.5.
The pitch mix:
The four-seamer has baffled minor league hitters for most of his career, but when he came up to the Majors last year, it didn’t work. He has a goofy delivery and release poin, and Major League hitters have seen more of that and are much better hitters.
But the changeup in this one was the money pitch. A 20% SwStr%, .124 xwOBA. Great stuff on that pitch, which was his putaway option.
Tong’s had a strange season with a 4.54 ERA in the minors. Just a 14.3% K-BB% down there:
But he’s been better lately with a 17% K-BB%, 2.00 ERA, and 1.08 WHIP in the minors over the last seven starts before he got called back up. I think we’ll see him again, and he’ll be an interesting case to look at for next year.
Logan Webb - 6.0IP 3H 1ER 1R 8K 2BB
Eight strikeouts, 19 whiffs? Where’d that come from? He threw MORE SINKERS here, which makes the opposite of sense in conjunction with whiffs.
15.8% SwStr% ont hat sinker, and the sweeper/change/4-seam were whiffing it up as well.
Eury Perez - 4.0IP 10H 5ER 7R 5K 3BB
The Mets are a tough matchup right now, and they had no issues with Eury yesterday. The strikeouts were fine, but he had no command again and got hit around bad. It’s been really rough for Eury lately. Maybe he’s just wearing down, he’s never pitched this much in a season. It’s hard to start the guy right now. Next up is the Dodgers… so he’s a fine drop in my book since we’re coming to the end here.
Joey Cantillo - 2.33IP 3H 4ER 4R 3K 5BB
Five more walks for Cantillo. He has an 18.8% BB% over the last five starts. He’s not good, and you never should have trusted him.
Nick Pivetta - 5.0IP 2H 0ER 0R 2K 0BB
Returned! Five shutout innings, 63 pitches. Just one whiff… two strikeouts. That’s a bit of a problem, but good to see him back and efficient again.
It’s hard to judge his season on just five starts and 21 innings, but hopefully we get a healthy end of the season from Pivetta so we can have something to evaluate him for next year. He’ll be 34 coming off an injury-plagued season, so the downside will be pretty rough. But it’s not too late for Pivetta, I could see him having a very nice season again next year since he’s been very good for the last few years when on the mound.
Troy Melton - 5.67IP 7H 4ER 4R 3K 1BB
He’s not finishing up well. Last five starts:
9.4% K-BB%, 5.46 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, 1.6 HR/9. The homer issues are showing up and the strikeout rate has been down again.
Noah Cameron - 6.0IP 3H 0ER 0R 7K 2BB
Six more shutties for Cameron. Down to 3.93 ERA and 1.20 WHIP on the year. He’s kind of just “fine”. You get some good, you get some bad. Overall the K% being at 21.7% makes it tough to get consistent results. I don’t think we’ll love him for next year, but he’s certainly done enough to be a fixture in the Royals rotation for years to come. Low ceiling, decent floor guy. Just the type the Royals seem to like. At least these types seem to stay healthy at a higher rate.
Three innings and 44 pitches for Chase Burns against the Dodgers. He had no trouble with them, but three innings per week from now on can’t help a fantasy team very much.
3.0IP 0H 0ER 0R 5K 1BB
Henry Bolte had a homer, THREE walks, and THREE steals. Massive game even getting just one ball into play (and out of the yard). He’s been fantastic and could be a “league winner” type since all of the games this week are in Sacramento. I want that guy on my teams next year, no doubt about it. He could be a first round pick someday, I think.
Teoscar Hernandez has really turned it on. Hitting .432/.516/.654 in September, hit a three-run bomb last night after Burns got out of the way. Weird season for Teoscar and a tough click next year as an older guy, but he’s still capable as we’re seeing now:
The stats by year:
So a .740 OPS the last two years, and his home run rate has dipped down to 3.1% this year. That’s pretty disqualifying, he’s always been a one-trick pony with the homers, so he has to hit mid-20s of those to matter, and he’s not quite playing at that pace this year, bu tit’s not too late for him to catch up on that I guess with 18 games to play.
Coby Mayo homered twice.
He has seven bombs since August began. Since July 1st:
Elite home run pace, .916 OPS. We must check the splits, though, because this guy has been a lefty masher who can do nothing against righties in his career. Since July 1st, we’re seeing that remain true:
But he’s turbo-smashing lefties. He’ll have to really improve against righties if he wants to play, and not playing or hitting righties makes you almost irrelevant in fantasy leagues. Great DFS play against lefties, though. He’s been the best hitter in the league against lefties this year:
Elly has been awesome of late. Three straight games with homers. .890 OPS in the second half:
The homers are coming now and he has 11 steals in the second half. So you’re getting your first-round production from Elly. It’s a two-man show in Cincinnati unlike many other spots you’ve ever seen.
Moises Ballesteros hit a homer. He’s been awful this year, and extra awful since going to the Angels. With LA:
.195/.242/.283 with his new team. He hit .231/.303/.385 with the Cubs. But that was mostly from his April when he crushed to the tune of a 1.172 OPS. Since May 1st, he’s been one of the worst players in baseball.
But it’s a good time to buy low, I guess. He was a touted prospect who was supposed to hit well in the MAJORS. And at age 22, there’s plenty of time.
He has the problem of being a man without a position though. He’s a bad catcher, so his natural spot is DH, but he hasn’t hit anywhere near deserving starts there.
That’ll do it! I’ve gotta gas up the football scripts, we have a game tomorrow and the week one DFS slate this weekend.
If you’re into the football stuff, just know that my first week or two here won’t be as good. I’ll talk more about that today or tomorrow on the fantasy football section here. I need to finish baseball strong, and I need current-season football data to do the things I can do. So week one will be light, but by October we’ll be really doing some good stuff here for football bros (especially DFS). Gotta run!
