Wyatt Langford had a big day. A swipe and a pipe for the young Rangers outfield. He scored 25 fantasy points and was one of the top performers. It wasn’t a massive game, but I felt he deserves a look as the player of the day because we haven’t heard much from him this year.
We thought he could quickly turn into a top two-round pick after he was drafted and got to the Majors very quickly. He is a super talented player.
But he doesn’t look all that impressive anymore. His bat speed is just 56th percentile and his sprint speed is 73rd. Some of this could just be from all of the injuries he’s had.
I thought he’d be an easy 20-20 player if he could play 140+ games. And that would probably be true this year:
93 games, 16 homers, 12 steals. But that’s not a world-beating pace. And the batting average is now in the .240s the lats two years. His K% has improved from last year, down to 20.7% where he was in his rookie debut, but a .277 BABIP has held him down a bit. That said, his xBA is .237, so he’s not deserving of some .260 batting average or anything like that.
He’s just not hitting the ball all that hard this year:
His barrel rate is 6.6% despite a high FB% and pretty good air pull rate.
It looks to me like a guy who just isn’t playing at 100%. If he can ever have a 100% healthy season, I think he’s a 25-25 guy with .260 batting average upside, but the muscle issues keep popping up. He’ll get to 110 games or so this year, meaning he’ll have missed an average of around 40 games in his three-year career.
Probably still more of a buy than a sell long-term, but maybe we just overestimated his actual skills the last few years.
Elly De La Cruz should probably get the player of the day award. Yet another homer, this time off of Skubal. And he allegedly threw a dude out at home on a 105mph throw. I’m not sure I believe that, but what do I know? I suppose it’s not a crazy number since you can crow-hop into it or whatever. But color me a little bit skeptical about that.
25 bombs now for Elly, tying his career high from 2024. He has 25 steals as well and now a .283 batting average. So yeah, he’s a first rounder next year - little doubt about that.
Pete Alonso hit his 34th homer of the year. He’s right in line with what he did last year. He’s the picture of consistency in homers and run production.
He went through that weird 2023-2024 stretch hitting .218 and .237, but every other year he’s been between .260 and .270, so that’s probably who he is.
He did get a sort of late start to his career, and he’ll be 32 for next year. So this is the peak for Alonso, we’d think. But there could and should be 3-4 more years of 30+ bombs. Maybe that’s an aggressive thing to say, but he hasn’t slowed down at all and has been one of the most consistent hitters in baseball.
He’s #4 in baseball in homers since 2021.

Let’s look at the pitching side.
Cam Schlittler - 7.0IP 3H 1ER 1R 10K 0BB
Jacob Misiorowski - 6.33IP 4H 1ER 1R 9K 2BB
Tarik Skubal - 7.33IP 4H 2ER 2R 5K 2BB
Business as usual for those Cy Young caliber arms. Skubal’s strikeout performance was underwhelming against the Reds, but 7.1 innings of two-run ball and a win, you’re not complaining about that.
Reid Detmers - 6.0IP 1H 0ER 0R 9K 1BB
We should consider Detmers an ace, clearly. One of his best outings here against the Red Sox. 14 whiffs, a 56.3% Strike%, a 34.8% Ball%, .197 xwOBA. Brilliant stuff from the lefty.
His K-BB% is elite, and so his his quality of contact allowed. So that’s basically all you’re looking for in a pitcher.
Can he hold up next year after this massive innings jump? That’s the question that might keep his draft price down a little bit, but he’s as good as anybody right now with a 0.69 ERA and 0.82 WHIP in his last six starts (right around the time that coaching staff changed).
Bubba Chandler - 6.0IP 4H 2ER 2R 8K 0BB
This was the big surprise of the night. Eight strikeouts, no walks against the White Sox. Six strong for Chandler, who hasn’t had a very good season. But at least he’s stayed super healthy. He’s had a second half you can feel decent about:
You want more than 23% K% for a guy throwing 101, but a 3.40 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 15% K-BB%, and 0.57 HR/9 make him a pretty good SP3 in the Majors.
Corbin Burnes - 3.0IP 2H 0ER 0R 2K 2BB
He is back! The pitch mix:
So the 92.7mph is low on the primary pitch, but as a cutter, that’s not bad at all. That’s a pretty hard cutter, and it’s his bread-and-butter pitch. He has more velo on the sinker at 94.1.
The whiffs weren’t there (8.8% SwStr%), but that’s kinda who he was before the injury.
I’m not sure what happened with the guy since he had a 35.6% K% in 2021 in his best season. Dude posted a 30.4% K-BB% that year. Followed it up with a 30.5% K% and 6.4% BB% in 2022. Since then, though, he’s been mid-20s for the strikeout rate and has been getting the job done more with weak contact powered by that cutter instead of gaudy strikeout numbers.
But he’s back and will be an interesting pitcher to rank/draft next year.
Quinn Mathews - 6.0IP 5H 2ER 2R 4K 2BB
Good result from Mathews. The main thing we’re looking for is the walks. He threw a 37.4% Ball% last night, which is still high, but not out of control. Getting through six innings is a win. But the 10.1% SwStr% was disappointing.
Let’s just look at the pitch mix update for him:
Four-seamer doesn’t look impressive so far. The secondaries have been pretty good. Slider, changeup, curveball. But he seems like one of these guys who will be frustrating and inconsistent until he can figure out how to get more strikes with the fastball.
Overall, it’s bad news. The 45% Strike% and 39% Ball% are really bad, it’s tough to get results with that going on. He can fix it, he’s only 591 pitches into his big league career, but there’s a lot of work to do.
Two guys who were probably started in most leagues last night got tanked:
Andrew Painter - 5.0IP 10H 5ER 5R 6K 2BB
Deflating one here since Painter was looking like a huge breakout late. The pitch mix from yesterday:
He wasn’t wild, and he dids till get a 14.3% SwStr% while the changeup dominated. But he gave up two ill-timed homers and got hit hard most of the night. It’s not that bad. Sometimes you just get hit around and give up homers at the wrong time. I’d still probably start him next time if you started him this time.
Sean Burke - 1.33IP 8H 7ER 7R 2K 2BB
An .800 BABIP! But a .589 xwOBA and .481 xBA. He got hit to death by the Pirates. At least he didn’t walk eight guys again, I guess?
The game log:
So he’s been bad in the last five.
17 walks, 17 strikeouts, three homers given up. I’d cut my losses here.
Freddy Peralta - 6.0IP 5H 1ER 1R 2K 1BB
The Rays are figuring something out with Freddy, but the strikeouts are still gone.
This one just looks like good luck. He gave up a .329 xwOBA and a .282 xBA, but got through six innings without much damage done.
Not much has changed since he went to Tampa:
Dead on the league averages at a 12% SwStr% and 36% Ball%, and just below the league average with a .314 xwOBA.
But the fastball isn’t what it used to be, and he’s really never had great secondary pitches.
He’ll be a free agent after this one, and I don’t think he’s going to get very big bucks after this career-worst season.
Some streamers for today and tomorrow.
Today:
Zebby Matthews vs. DET
Davis Martin vs. PIT
That’s the best we’ve got. Zebby has been pretty good lately with a 3.19 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and 15.6% K-BB% over his last four starts. But it’s risky since his season has been so poor and he can always go out there and give up a few dingers. But if you need someone, he’s the guy.
Tomorrow:
Jared Jones vs. CWS
Luis Castillo vs. PIT
Cristian Javier vs. PHI
I would start Jones if you’re in a strikeouts league. His ceiling is high and he had a great outing last time. And it’s a fine matchup with Chicago.
Cristian Javier is getting a ton of whiffs lately. 16, 21, 13, and 19 in his last four starts. But he’s not getting into the sixth inning and has been pulled after getting through the lineup twice in each of his last four. So that will probably happen again tomorrow. Plus having to see Harper and Schwarber twice.. I think the risk outweighs the reward.
