Introduction / Explanation For New Readers

I am writing this on my brand new MacBook. I have long been a Mac guy, but for the last few years, I’ve been doing everything on a Windows PC. The keyboard shortcuts are still in my head, but I have to use a little bit of mental effort to call them to my fingertips. On Windows, if you hit control+backspace, it erases the previous word, but when I do that on the Mac it wipes out my whole freaking sentence - so that’s been a little bit frustrating so far - lol.

So now I’ll be going back and forth between Mac and Windows throughout the days, and I have no idea how that’s going to go in terms of keyboard shortcuts and stuff. The scroll bar on a mouse even works in inverse ways between Mac and Windows - so I’ll have to change that on one of these computers.

But anyways, Macs are just so slick, man. Everything is so smooth and clear and good-looking, and the plug-and-play is just incredible. Whatever you plug into this bad boy, it just works.

I have this older projector that I got from my work in 2019, so I’ve used it to watch TV outside in the summers and falls. I wasn’t able to do that this year until now since the old Mac just couldn’t handle it anymore. But last night I watched a little Dodgers/Brewers while my wife was exercising (5 months pregnant and still working out - shout out to her!), and then she came out and we watched the first episode of that Manti T’eo documentary on Netflix.

Image

It was quite beautiful. That documentary is pretty wild - I’m sure most of you remember that story but a lot of interesting stuff in the doc that I don’t remember.

Nick Lodolo had his best outing of the year after I had given up on him in my home league. He went for a 36.7% CSW% and a 16.3% SwStr%. It was his first scoreless outing of more than five innings this year, and it came against a tough Phillies lineup at home.

Fo the year his arsenal breakdown looks like this:

He gets a bunch of swinging strikes on the curveball, and a good amount on the sinker as well since the league average there is something like 6%.

The problem is the walks. He has walked at least two batters in his last six starts, and has a 10.4% BB% on the year. That makes him pretty risky start-to-start, but the upside is huge. If he can bring that walk rate down to 8% or so, he is going to be a very, very good pitcher and I would really like to have this guy in keeper/dynasty leagues.

Ross Stripling was also very good as he returned from a brief IL stint. He took a perfect game into the sixth inning and put up some really solid numbers with his 72 pitches. He has been quite effective since joining the rotation, and he showed no signs of lingering injury yesterday. The K% is low at 21%, but it comes with a really low 4% BB% - so that kinda works.

Tony Gonsolin did it again, throwing seven scoreless against the Brewers. He actually had a good strikeout total (8) in this one, but he continues to put up elite ERA and WHIP despite a mediocre K%-BB% of 17.3%.

His xwOBA against is really good at .266, but it’s still not even top 10 in the league among pitchers with 15+ GS.

Lowest xwOBA against, 15+ GS

  1. McClanahan .248

  2. Javier .249

  3. Kershaw .249

  4. Scherzer .251

  5. Burnes .251

  6. Nola .256

  7. Cease .256

  8. Alcantara .256

  9. Urias .258

  10. Kirby .258

  11. Cortes .259

  12. Rodon .259

  13. Ohtani .260

  14. Fried .261

  15. Verlander .263

  16. Gonsolin .266

I would rather have a pitcher with a good K-BB and a bad xwOBA rather than the reverse, but it’s becoming very hard to argue with the results Gonsolin is getting.

I guess there are five ways to be a good pitcher:

  1. Stuff

  2. Command

  3. Pitch Mix

  4. Deception

  5. Luck

Pitch mix and deception kind of go together. The best pitchers have all five of these things, but if you have two of them you’ll probably do fine. Gonsolin I think has command, and must have deception, and he certainly has some luck. There’s nothing to do here at this point rather than just continue to start the guy every day.

Two seemingly bad SPs had good starts in tough matchups yesterday, which I’ll admit it’s pretty freaking annoying. If you’re Adam Oller going up against the Rangers and I stack the Rangers on DraftKings, you’re just supposed to get thrashed. I mean c’mon man.

Oller vs. TEX: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 1 BB
Voth vs. TOR: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 K, 1 BB

Here are their numbers for the year

I don’t see Oller as actually being good, I think he was just lucky yesterday. I do thing Voth probably has some of the control and deception that we talked about above, I certainly don’t want to start that guy in fantasy but maybe we shouldn’t play a ton of hitters against him in DFS.

So who are the “gas cans” of 2022? That’s what we need to know, and now!

Let’s see which pitchers have

  • Low K%

  • High xwOBA against

I would include high BB% in there, but for DFS purposes we don’t even really like that. I would rather have someone throw a really bad strike to my hitter than to walk him twice.

So here is a list. I looked at pitchers with 10+ GS, a K% below 20%, and then I sorted by xwOBA.

  1. Patrick Corbin: 18.9% K%, .373 xwOBA

  2. Jonathan Heasley: 16.5%, .371 xwOBA

  3. Michael Pineda: 12.8%, .369 xwOBA

  4. Joan Adon: 17.8%, .365 xwOBA

  5. Ryan Feltner: 19.2%, .365 xwOBA

  6. Adam Oller: 13.9%, .364 xwOBA

  7. Kris Bubic: 19.4%, .360 xwOBA

  8. Alex Faedo: 18.5%, .357 xwOBA

  9. Beau Brieske: 15.9%, .356 xwOBA

  10. Bryse Wilson: 15.0%, .354 xwOBA

The pitchers with the worst home run rates:

  1. Pineda 16.4 PA/HR

  2. Minor 17.1 PA/HR

  3. Smeltzer 19.7 PA/HR

  4. Oller 21.0 PA/HR

  5. Heaslsey 21.4 PA/HR

  6. Espino 21.6 PA/HR

  7. Hendricks 23.7 PA/HR

  8. Brieske 24.2 PA/HR

  9. Wilson 24.6 PA/HR

  10. Thompson 24.8 PA/HR

Sean Murphy had the biggest hitter game of the night with three barrels and two homers. He has a .286/.394/.595 line with seven homers, a 16.2% Brl%, and a .403 xwOBA since the All-Star Break.

Interesting names in the hot hitters below, so check that out. Let’s get to the report.
