Introduction / Explanations for New Readers

Baseball-Reference still hasn’t loaded box scores from yesterday, and Baseball Savant doesn’t have anything from the CWS/LAA game last night, so we’re in real trouble here. The below notes don’t have anything for that game, which is just awful because Ohtani pitched and had 24 whiffs or something again.

Hopefully, they all get that fixed and we can keep rolling, but this will automatically be the worst Daily Notes of the year since it’s incomplete.

We saw the first really good start of the year from Mike Clevinger last night, as he threw six scoreless with a beautiful 16.3% SwStr% and a strong 32.6% CSW%. It’s tough to look at his numbers for the year since he’s been bouncing on and off the IL with different problems, but we know the talent he possesses so it will be interesting to see what he can do moving forward. If I had to pick a lane, I would probably be looking to trade him if someone will give you a nice return for it - but maybe you can cross your fingers and hope he puts up another nice start next time and then try to move him. It just seems unlikely that he’ll stay on the field here, but we only have three months left to cover so it wouldn’t be crazy if he stays in the rotation and pitches really well.

Bryan Reynolds was easily the hitter of the day with three barrel daddies, and they were all just murked (101, 102.8, 105.1). All three of those were BLASTS, and I know that because I have added the blast calculation to the Tableau dashboard.

If you don’t know what a blast is, you can read about it here. They are a subset of barrels, and this plot is really all you need to see to understand the concept:

The reds are blasts and the blues are barrels. So all blasts are barrels, but not all barrels are blasts. You can find blast rate and total blasts on my MLB Tableau Dashboard. The inventor of the stat is Alex Chamberlain, who is quite a great follow for baseball purposes. He’s a fellow data guy who has his own MLB Tableau dashboard, so check him out if you’re not familiar. I hope to have him on the podcast soon to talk about our shared interests.

Reynolds is now hitting .258/.328/.476 with 15 dingers on the year. He’s struck out a bit more this year with a 24% K% and his contact rate is short of great at 72%. If we arbitrarily chop off the first month of games, Reynolds numbers look like this: .277/.333/.537, 13 HR, 7.8% Brl, 6.4% Blast%, 23.7% K%, 73% Contact%. So not a ton different under the hood but the bad luck he experienced early on has turned around and he’s been quite a useful fantasy hitter - shoutout to anybody who bought low on him in early May.

Trying something new tomorrow - I’ll be going live on YouTube with @MLBMovingAvg at noon eastern, provided that I figure out the technical stuff since this will be the first go at it.

One more reminder that these notes aren’t complete cause we’re missing that Angels/White Sox game - and that means the dashboard stuff isn’t showing that game either. I hope to have that fixed today but it’s not really on me at this point.
