Introduction / Explanations for New Readers
We have Luis Garcia’s all over these notes today. Both pitcher Luis Garcia’s pitched, and the hitter Luis Garcia homered.
The Astros Garcia didn’t pitch particularly well, walking four hitters and giving up a homer, but he did put up 14 whiffs and seven strikeouts. The best outing of the day by CSW% was once again King McClanahan, but Pablo Lopez had his best outing of the year, which is a welcome sign since he’s been struggling a bit.
For the year, Lopez now has a
25.5% K%
7.6% BB%
48.2% GB%
.367 SLG against
35.6 PA/HR
Those are all pretty good numbers. Season arsenal marks here:
The SwStr% marks are good on every pitch. 10.3% for a four-seamer and 13.0% for a sinker are well above the league average for those pitch types, so everything under the hood still looks really encouraging for Lopez. I’m certainly holding on tight to him, and might even try to buy him right now - he’s really good.
Our boy Mike Clevinger turned in a good box score result but the CSW% was putrid at 20.7% K%. He put up just a 10.9% SwStr%. For the year those marks are 28.2% K% and 12.4% - so that’s better, but it was a bit of a discouraging start in the soft matchup with the Tigers, but maybe we shouldn’t argue as much with results.
George Kirby came back and did okay. He threw just 51 pitches but did get four strikeouts while walking one and avoiding the long ball and the barrel. He’s a good pitcher to have for the stretch run, he should be helping everybody’s WHIP.
