SP Luck Analysis - AVG & SLG by Batted Ball Type

Everybody knows about BABIP, but have you ever thought about BABIP and SLGBIP at each batted ball type?

I'm going to discuss this in-depth on a podcast today or tomorrow, but I wanted to send you a quick post to review this data file I developed this morning.

What I have done is taken every pitcher that made at least a dozen starts last year, and then calculated their batting average on balls in play along with their slugging on balls in play by each of the three main batted ball types. Here’s how it breaks down on average

  • Ground Balls: .245 AVG, .256 SLG

  • Line Drives: .624 AVG, .874 SLG

  • Fly Balls: .251 AVG, .778 SLG

For each pitcher, you’ll see their batting average and slugging percentage allowed in these four categories:

  • Overall

  • On Ground Balls

  • On Line Drives

  • On Fly Balls
