The last full week before the trade deadline. Let’s see who could possibly make the last starts with their respective teams.
LEGEND
Anchor Arms - General consensus is they are going to dominate the matchup.
Send it Guys - Expect a solid performance. Thanks to either a favorable matchup or just a hot hand.
Danger Zone - Could be an awesome start with a solid amount of upside, but it’s not a comfortable matchup.
Desperation Station - A super unfavorable matchup, but you are desperate for points, so you start them anyway.
Hard Pass - Dudes I don’t have any interest in starting.
DISCLAIMER - Starters subject to change; we use the best information we have available to project who will be starting on a given day.
Monday July 27th
ANCHOR ARMS
Zack Wheeler @ Miami - He’s dominated this matchup his entire career.
Chase Burns vs Cleveland - A chance he doesn’t go past five innings.
SEND IT GUYS
Gerrit Cole @ CWS - If this start goes well, I think he’s going to become a regular in the Anchor Arm tier.
Georgy Kirby @ Texas
Kyle Bradish @ Detroit - Needs to keep the command of his sinker going.
DANGER ZONE
Payton Tolle @ Athletics - Hitters park, A’s offense is bad, but they’ve mashed lefties at home. If you read the Park Predictors by our buddy John Allen here, you would know that.
Tatsuya Imai @ LAA - He was solid in his last start, but man, he’s hard to trust.
Walbert Urena vs Houston - Still a groundball getter. He might even become a Send It Guy with his increased velocity leading to more whiffs.
Kumar Rocker vs Seattle - He’s on a heater right now, good spot at home
DESPERATION STATION
Jack Perkins vs Boston - Too risky of a matchup for me to start in most leagues. Gives up a lot of flyballs, which leads to homers in his home park.
Max Scherzer @ Washington - Personally a hard pass for me.
Bubba Chandler vs Arizona - Ever since the All-Star break, the Snakes have been swinging the bats well. Die-hard DBack fans are also connecting the offense breakout to Pavin Smith being DFA’d just before the break. Bubba is coming off an okay start against the Yankees.
Matthew Liberatore vs CHC
Brandon Sproat @ San Francisco - Solid pitcher's park spot, but this month hasn’t been great to Brandon compared to June.
David Peterson @ St. Louis
Keider Montero vs Baltimore - He’s been fantastic lately but just not giving much length. Groundball machine with his sinker.
Zac Thornton vs Atlanta - Second career start, not sure what to make of him yet.
HARD PASS
Martin Perez @ NYM
Tyler Phillips vs Philadelphia
Merrill Kelly @ Pittsburgh
Noah Schultz vs NYY
Tyler Mahle vs Milwaukee - He hasn’t been terrible, and being he’s at home, this is a spot I could entertain, but I don’t think going against this Milwaukee offense is wise.
Slade Cecconi @ Cincinnati
Andrew Alvarez vs Toronto
Tuesday July 28th
ANCHOR ARMS
Chris Sale @ NYM
Logan Henderson @ San Francisco
Griffin Jax vs Texas
Reid Detmers vs Houston - Detmers has been great, and Houston has a sub .700 OPS against LHP the last month and a half.
SEND IT GUYS
Christian Scott vs Atlanta - I think he’s a must-start, a bright spot for sure on this crappy Mets team. Let’s see if he can get some run support to earn a W.
Gavin Williams @ Cincinnati
Max Fried @ CWS - Had a great start back off the IL.
Justin Wrobleski vs Seattle - Awesome home spot.
Cade Cavalli vs Toronto
Michael King vs Colorado - Road Rockies.
Troy Melton vs Baltimore - Check out his last four starts.
DANGER ZONE
Gage Jump vs Boston - Tough spot at home, hasn’t been efficient lately.
Peter Lambert @ LAA
Aaron Nola @ Miami - Meh, which version of Nola will we get?
Jake Bennett @ Athletics - Similar to Payton Tolle.
Shane Bieber @ Washington - He’s been groundballs at a decent clip (46%).
Sandy Alcantara vs Philadelphia
DESPERATION STATION
Dean Kremer @ Detroit - Splitter guy; when it works, he’s great, but it just hasn’t lately.
Bailey Ober vs Kansas City
Seth Lugo @ Minnesota - Could he be moved at the deadline? Starting to pitch better.
Mitch Keller vs Arizona
Hunter Dobbins vs CHC - He has a wipeout sweeper; good chance for some K’s.
Landen Roupp vs Milwaukee
Brady Singer vs Cleveland - Command has been good, consistently okay.
HARD PASS
Cal Quantrill @ Tampa Bay
Michael Lorenzen @ San Diego
Colin Rea @ St. Louis
Anthony Kay vs NYY - Nothing on his profile makes me want to start him. His projection sucks too.
Brandon Pfaadt @ Pittsburgh
Luis Castillo @ LAD - His projection looks okay, but why would anyone want to start Luis here?
Wednesday July 29th
ANCHOR ARMS
Tarik Skubal vs Baltimore - Could this be his last start in Detroit??? I’m going to call my shot and give a BOLD take. He’s going to be a Dodger next week. They’re hell-bent on this three-peat.
Cam Schlittler @ CWS - He keeps clicking off quality starts.
Jesus Luzardo @ Miami - Sometimes I honestly forget this guy came from Miami. Why in the world would they trade him to someone in their division?
SEND IT GUYS
Ian Seymour vs Texas - Nice bounceback start last time out against Toronto. Solid K upside.
Logan Webb vs Milwaukee
Shane Drohan @ San Francisco - Just awesome swing-and-miss stuff. A 17% SwStr% on his fastball is fantastic.
Jared Jones vs Arizona
MacKenzie Gore @ Tampa Bay - Last four starts owns a 23.1% K-BB%, start 'em.
Sean Manaea vs Atlanta
Trevor Rogers @ Detroit - He’s been pounding the zone, a 29.3% Ball% in July. Last time out against Atlanta, he had 18 whiffs!
DANGER ZONE
Joey Cantillo @ Cincinnati
Jacob Lopez vs Boston - Great strikeout upside, risky park (25.4% K% & 14.4% SwStr%).
Matthew Boyd @ St. Louis
Patrick Sandoval @ Athletics - Similar prognosis as his teammates Payton Tolle & Jake Bennett.
Taj Bradley vs Kansas City
Trey Yesavage @ Washington
DESPERATION STATION
Griffin Canning vs Colorado - Not a fan of it but we’ll trust the projections.
Emerson Hancock @ LAD
Grant Holmes @ NYM
Gabriel Hughes @ San Diego - Same reasoning as Griffin ^.
Eric Lauer vs Seattle - Great spot for Eric.
Davis Martin vs NYY
Ryan Gusto vs Philadelphia
HARD PASS
Zack Littell vs Toronto
Grayson Rodriguez vs Houston - Remember when everyone thought the Orioles were so stupid for trading him? LOLOLOL
Michael McGreevy vs CHC
Rhett Lowder vs Cleveland - Decent start last time out, would like to see him do it again before starting him.
Randy Dobnak @ Minnesota
Eduardo Rodriguez @ Pittsburgh
