SHARP: JAC CAGLIANONE
You’re outside of the first ten rounds by this time, so it would be time to start embracing a bit more risk. I cover the upside with Cags here. But it’s summarized here:
He could be a top 30 pick next year. I’m looking to buy in now.
FISH: JOSE CABALLERO
I made a case for Chandler Simpson, and I think what’s happening is that people find themselves in desperate need of steals after pick 200, and they look up to see someone else taking Simpson. So they panic and take Caballero, the league-leader in steals last year.
The difference between these two would be that Simpson is clearly a starter. Caballero is a utility guy. If the Yankees come into the regular season healthy, I don’t think this guy will even start on Opening Day. He’s not much of a hitter (.239 average last year), either. The path to him stealing enough bases to matter is basically hoping for an injury or two. Or maybe you think the Yankees will finally bail on Anthony Volpe or something. But is Caballero really a better option?
I just don’t see the playing time for Caballero to justify this price. Get your steals somewhere else - it’s not hard to do!
