TRADE REACTION: Yank's, Cubs, Red Sox New Additions
Reviewing trades and if they have any fantasy implications
Let’s review a few of the larger-impact trades that have taken place this afternoon.
The Yankees obviously have a huge hole in their lineup with Aaron Judge missing. Ramos is going to have the tough task of filling in those huge shoes (literally). He missed some time with a right quad strain this season, and has a bit of an injury history.
One thing I wanted to check out was his spray chart. How will he utilize his new extremely hitter-friendly home park? This season, he has an 8.2% AirPull%. He should have a fantastic last two months offensively just based on his new home park. The only hangup I’ve got is a 54% GB%; can’t hit the ball out of the yard if it’s killing worms.
Going to San Fran, Henry Lalane was New York’s #5 prospect while Kaeden Kent was their #13.
Boy, is Lalane an interesting prospect. The left-handed hurler stands a towering 6 feet 7 inches, weighing 211 lbs. He doesn’t throw a ton of gas, interestingly enough (94 mph average). I really love that he has a 49.4% Strike% and a 36.2% Ball% this season. Solid command is a great foundation. Just need this kid to stay healthy.

Overall, I really like this move for the Yankees and Heliot. He has an opportunity to hit in a much better lineup, especially once they get healthy.
This is an interesting one; this guy's model absolutely hated it.
Not sure how he figures everything, but it certainly does feel like a steep price to pay for a decent lefty bullpen option.
Mayer has always felt like the red-headed stepchild for the Red Sox. I mean, he was a top prospect his entire minor league career, and he just never ever got a runway at the big league level. I mean, he only has a 19% K% this season in the bigs. I think he could certainly be an interesting infield option in dynasty leagues and potentially redrafts next year. I’m really hoping he gets plenty of runway in San Fran.
Going back to Boston is Erik Miller.
Super solid in lefty-lefty matchups. He’s not of any fantasy value. The entire trade isn’t super high impact, but I still think Mayer has a high ceiling and could really blossom in a change of scenery.
The Cubs, man, Jesse Rogers of ESPN swindled us into thinking they were getting Reid Detmers from the Angels. Instead, they don’t and pivot to Clay Holmes. A much lesser option, but the Cubs need any kind of help they can get, so they’ll take it.
Going from the Windy City to the Big Apple is Jefferson Rojas.
He’s a top 100 prospect in baseball and currently tearing it up in AA ball. The small frame isn’t ideal, but he still has pop, 15 home runs in 383 PA. Most common comps are Cole Young, David Hamilton, and Trevor Story. So I’m not really sure how high of a ceiling this kid has. I’m imagining him as a scrappy second baseman for the Mets, maybe a 15-15 guy at the most?
Clay Holmes has been out since the beginning of the season with a fractured fibula.
I believe he was hit by a comebacker, if I'm not mistaken. He’s been rehabbing down in Florida. Clay is a groundball pitcher, so being in Wrigley with the winds blowing out shouldn’t really affect him unless he throws meatballs right down the pipe. I imagine he’s going to take Javier Assad’s spot in the rotation.
For fantasy purposes, I’m not going out of my way to try and roster Clay, but he’s an interesting pickup for sure. Tyrone Taylor is going to be a bench guy/defensive replacement for the Cubbies.
I’m still trying to catch up from all the action today. We just got home from the beach, and mentally preparing for work tomorrow is giving me the Monday Scaries. Today was just not fun for me in the baseball world anyway. I knew the Orioles would sell, but it just hits different when it actually happens. The return for Adley was great; it’s just so frustrating seeing him go to a division rival. I digress; hope everyone had an awesome trade deadline and wins the week!
