The Daily Notes are the flagship resource of MLB Data Warehouse. Every morning, Jon breaks down the current goings on in the fantasy baseball world, and an automated daily report gets you up to date on key stats and trends. Become a paid subscriber at MLB Data Warehouse to get this unlocked in your inbox every morning.
I’m doing a Sunday edition because there are a few things to say.
First, if you don’t want the DFS & Betting emails, you can now opt out. I’ve created a new section of MLB Data Warehouse for DFS & Betting articles. It won’t change anything unless you opt out. To do that, I believe you have to go to a desktop, log in to Substack, and manage your subscriptions.
From there, you can turn off the section.
Wrote about him just last week in “Minor Leaguers to Know.”
We’ve seen a few different versions of the Schlutzinator.
He was elite in 2024, and that got us all hot and bothered about his 2025 debut, which never happened because he was terrible and hurt.
But in 14 innings so far, he’s been awesome. And the White Sox need him, so they’re being pretty aggressive here, and he’ll join the team this week.
The fScores aren’t great, because he had that poor 2025 season.
But he’s been dominating so far this year. A 19:2 K:BB in three outings.
The Prospect Analysis dashboard is currently showing wrong numbers. There’s something wrong with a calculation in there, and it’s throwing everything off. But I will get that fixed and enhanced soon. Sorry about that for those of you who have been in there looking at confusing numbers (like a 90% K% on Schultz so far - that is not correct).
Here’s the Pitch Profiler page:
Just a 101 Stuff+ isn’t what you’d expect. This dude is 6’10’’ and left-handed though, so his stuff is likely to play a lot better than what you’d typically say.
I don’t see Schultz as a lock. He could be really bad. The command wasn’t there last year, and we’ve only seen the good Schultz again for 14 innings. But with the size and the velo he has, the upside is too much to be left on waivers in leagues where you’re still searching for SP help.
I also have to hype up Braxton Ashcraft, one guy I might have actually gotten right as a big breakout SP!
→ 5.0IP 4H 1ER 1R 9K 1BB
They pulled him after just 77 pitches, which was questionable in my opinion. But Ashcraft has arguably been the Pirates best pitcher in the early going. A 30% K%, a sub-8% BB%, a 51% GB%.
The Ball% is a touch higher than the BB% would suggest, and that bloats the JA ERA. But the SIERA is great.
He ranks 14th on FanGraphs in actual SIERA. The slider usage is still lower than we thought at just 18%. It’s a 24% against righties, he goes more FF+CU against lefties. So far, he’s handled lefties better.
The Pirates have been very careful with their SPs early on. The highest pitch count anybody has had on the Pirates is 88. They’re the only team left without a pitcher who has thrown 90+ pitches yet.
Here’s an ugly bar plot to show you:
It’s a young pitching staff, and the Pirates have sights on playing in October, so it makes sense. But it cost me a quality start yesterday, and I really needed it.
Emmet Sheehan also made us feel better after his slow start.
→ 6.0IP 4H 3ER 3R 6K 1BB
And the big news:
The velo was BACK. But he did lose it later on in his outing, again.
He gave up two homers to Brandon Nimmo; other than that, it was a great start and pretty encouraging to see.
I think that’s what you’ll see with a lot of these early-season velo droppers. Most of them will probably recover it, they’re just still getting going. In some cases, and quite possibly with Sheehan, it’s an intentional slow ramp-up.
Here’s an updated look at fantasy league owned SP with fastball velo declines thus far:
It really might be a smart thing to see if you can buy a bit low on those guys. Because if they do recover the velo in short order, they’ll theoretically be pitching better.
Michael Wacha would probably win the Cy Young if the season ended today.
You’re enjoying that if you have him. There’s a very high chance he’ll gravitate back toward his career norms. Last year, it was just an 11.3% K-BB% with a 3.86 ERA and a 4.61 SIERA. This year, it’s a 3.62 SIERA, which is better, but still nowhere near domination territory.
It’s “old man April”. And yeah, it makes loads of logical sense that the old guys would be better at the beginning of the season and then trend downward as time goes on, with younger guys being the reverse.
I’m out of time on this fine Sunday morning, but hey - shout out to James Wood and Oneil Cruz. Two first-round talents who are swinging it well early on.
Still plenty of strikeouts. There will be slumps! But the good is probably going to outweigh the bad this year, and perhaps massively so, since both guys can steal a bunch of bags.
