I noticed that Substack lets me do polls in here now, so that’s cool. The editor has been pretty limited over the years, but they’re adding new stuff. Gotta like that.
The Dodgers are 8-0, and the Braves are 0-7. And I want to speak to you Braves fans. I know there are a lot of you out there. You are one of the quickest fan bases to jump on my tweets about your players. But you all seem like decent people. I mean, probably some of you aren’t, but probably most of you are. I’ll give you all the benefit of the doubt. A lot of country singers that I like are Braves fans, so I’m with you.
And I feel for you. To whatever extent I can feel emotion about meaningless sports stuff, it’s there. The Braves had a tough luck season last year, and I’m sure you guys were geared up all offseason to get back for 2025 with a healthy roster and climb to the top of the division again. You go through that whole winter (although winter probably isn’t that bad in Georgia) waiting for the new season, and it finally comes, and then your team drops seven in a row. There are 155 games left, but 0-7 is still a tough hole to climb out of. Even if they play very good baseball from here on, you’d have to figure it’d take at least a month to get back to where you want to be.
Some good news is that DraftKings still thinks you have something like a 70% chance of making the playoffs. But yeah, it would kinda suck to get a weekend sweep this weekend and then look at your record and still be 3-7. Baseball is tough.
There’s good news on Spencer Strider; he currently sits on top of the Automated Minor League SP Ranks.
That’s enough about the Braves!
Lots of studs at the top of the Yesterdays SP Data sheet.
Good for Sonny Gray. Everybody was slamming his spring training on Twitter. Someone on there told me that Gray is known for really not caring about spring. And if you’re a veteran pitcher like he is, I’m not sure why you would care about the spring.
He did give up five runs by allowing two homers very late in that start, so that was unlucky. If you didn’t watch the game or follow it live and you have Gray, you’re probably a little bit peeeiiioossssed about that outing, but take heart - it was a fantastic outing for the man. Deuce-deuces on the whiff count with a sick 25% SwStr%.
A 15:2 K:BB in 11 innings is elite. The pitch mix so far is something to behold:
Three pitches above 20% usage, that’s rare to see. He’s a unique pitcher, and he’s never really been consistent. But he can earn strikes with a bunch of different pitches and posted that fantastic 24.5% K-BB% last year. I’m riding with Gray this year. I think you might even be able to buy a bit low on him after that 5 ER yesterday.
Landen Roupp pitched yesterday. He is on the “SPs to watch early on” list, which doesn’t exist physically but it’s in my head somewhere:
83 PC, 4 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 8 K, 4 BB, 16.9% SwStr%, 45.8% Strike%, 44.6% Ball%
The whiffs were there, but the command was not. I know we should forgive small samples, especially when they are very early in the season, but four walks and a 44% Ball% is tough for me. I hate those numbers a lot.
Now hold on. I WAS TOLD this guy had a new pitch mix! I criticized him for being way too dependent on the curveball and not having a good fastball! I said that would keep him away from being a useful starting pitcher. But then people told me NO JON HE’S DIFFERENT NOW. HE’S CHANGED.
But no, Roupp didn’t change. 41% curveballs and 39% bad sinkers. That is not going to work; the Giants should give Birdsong a shot.
I am thinking about doing a top 100 SP ranking that I update throughout the season. That would be a marvelous piece of content and would be pretty useful to you guys. Well, I guess it would only be useful if my ranks were good. And my ranks might not be good. So maybe I’ll do that.
If there is one thing I’ve learned in this IndUsTRy, it’s that

Jack Leiter was marvelous.
5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 6 K, 0 BB, 15.7% SwStr%, 51.4% Strike%, 34.3% Ball%
He left an inning early with a blisty, but they’re downplaying that. They said “precautionary”. First of all, “precautionary” is a nonsense word. Just say cautionary. Second of all, I don’t get it. Could they like… see the blister starting to develop? And then they yanked him so that it wouldn’t become a full-blown blister?
Here’s what it looks like in his first two outings.
The 15.1% SwStr% is great, the 38% Ball% is not great. The 56% GB% is good though! The stuff is nasty, and I do imagine that will keep the xwOBA down a bit. And there probably won’t be too much trouble for him to get some strikeouts. He certainly has a strikeout arsenal.
But is the command there? It was yesterday, but it wasn’t last year and it wasn’t there in his first start. The upside should have him owned in 12-team leagues or deeper. His next start is against the Cubs in Chicago, as long as the blister stays away.
Connor Gillispie has had a nice start to his season. He’s allowed four earned runs in ten innings but has ten strikeouts. He had a very nice 6:0 K:BB against the Mets yesterday. The underlying numbers don’t look good, so I guess I’m just telling you to ignore that positive result.
Two of the guys who most impressed in their first start of the year fell flat yesterday.
MacKenzie Gore gave up nine hits in five innings with a 5:2 K:BB on a poor 12.6% SwStr%. His two starts rank #5 and #95 on my new start grade tool.
Don’t say I didn’t warn you! Here’s the write-up from the first daily notes of the season.
And then Jeffrey Springs. Turns out it’s tougher to pitch in Sacramento than in Seattle, especially when you’re facing the Cubies.
3 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 3 SO, 4 BB
The overall numbers still check the boxes. A 15.2% SwStr% and 36% Ball% will play. He’s not exactly a fly ball guy, and that could certainly hurt him in this ballpark.
The Cubs have looked pretty deadly early on. They’ve hit 14 homers with a .275/.361/.506 slash line in games not played in Japan. And games shouldn’t be played in Japan. I held my tongue about that early on, but that series doesn’t do it for me. Opening Day should be in America. I don’t know why they can’t just have that series over there, but make the games exhibition. You can give the teams some other incentive to play their main guys, that’s fine. Give the winner cash or something. It’s so annoying to see the regular season start nine days before it should at six in the morning and then have both teams go back to spring training after. Knock that off.
I guess I should shout out Zac Gallen. He struck out 13 Yankees.
6.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 13 K, 0 BB, 23.8% SwStr%, 36.6% Ball%
I did not see that coming. In fact, I recommended under 4.5 strikeouts in the props article yesterday! Ah hah!
The curveball was bonkers. A 70% Strike% and a 43% SwStr% - those numbers are pretty unheard of.
Blake Snell sucked again yesterday. I think I’ll be saying this same thing about him for a few more weeks. It’s not a surprise to see him have no command early in the season.
4 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 0 ER, 2 K, 4 BB, 5% SwStr%, 36.2% Strike%, 43.8% Ball%
I mean that’s an awful, awful start. He’s very lucky all of those runs were unearned. The way he pitched certainly deserved a handful of earnies.
But this is what we see from Snell. Here are his K-BB% by month dating back to 2021:
So, what you’re going to do is this. You wait until mid or late April. You wait for Snell to throw another absolute clunker up there. Make sure he has the full look. The bags under his eyes, the look of complete lostness and despair. And then the next morning, you make a juicy trade offer for him. Make it tough to refuse. You don’t throw out total junk for him. That makes it too obvious. Look at your team. Find someone who is performing way better than they were expected to. Maybe a hitter you picked up in the early weeks who has been smashing early on. Offer that player for Snell. Bring him back and win the league.
I did this a couple of years with Nolan Gorman. It was beautiful.
Clay Holmes has not passed the test in his first two starts.
I hate that 7.5 SwStr%. Remember he was throwing that sinker 96-97 as a reliever. We knew that would come down, but 94.1 is pretty low. The good news is that it’s been pounded on the ground early on (73% GB%) and he’s been throwing a ton of strikes with it. That’s fine. You can get by quite nicely with those kinds of numbers on your sinkers.
But if you don’t have a couple of strong pitches behind it, it doesn’t work. And so far the numbers are all pretty awful on those secondaries.
The good news is that there are 4-5 different secondaries he can work on. And this is a short sample. If two of those can improve (especially that changeup), he could be a very useful fantasy starter. But it has not looked good early on, and yesterday was against the Marlins.
It looks like he’ll get the Marlins again in his next start. You can stream him then, but for now, I don’t think I want the guy.
We must shout out Ivan Herrera on the hitting side. He was a trendy late-round catcher pick, and he got himself into a second-place tie in MLB home runs early on with that performance.
That was the second three-homer performance of the young season (Judge on Saturday). That happened 17 times last year.
Home runs are up early on. We’re at 31.4 PA/HR this year, while that was at 33.1 last year. And that’s more surprising since it’s early in the year with colder temperatures.
HR/FB by Year
2021: 16.4%
2022: 12.8%
2023: 13.9%
2024: 13.9%
2025: 16.1%
Are the baseballs different? Impossible to say for now. If they are, though, the players set to benefit, I think, would be the guys who hit a lot of balls in the air but without a ton of authority. It will benefit everybody for homers, obviously, but we would want to zoom in a bit on the guys who had a lot of deep flyouts last year. Guy that didn’t have trouble getting the ball in the yard, but were often just hitting the ball a few ticks below what they’d need to find a fence.
