Gotta give it to Noah Cameron today. A complete-game shutout for Cameron against the Angels.
→ 9.0IP 1H 0ER 0R 8K 1BB
The Royals let him throw 115 pitches to get those 27 outs. Cameron racked up 21 whiffs, the most he’s had this year. It comes on the heels of this ridiculous late-summer run that Cameron has been on. Going back to July 24th:
→ 4 GS, 1.19 ERA, 0.56 WHIP, 26% K%, 7% BB%, 0 HR
Seven scoreless against the Tigers, eight scoreless against the Twins, eight one-run innings against the Twins, and now nine scoreless against the Angels. The Dodgers put four runs on his tally in the middle of that in 5.2 innings, but outside of that, Cameron has been dominating this weak schedule.
His season ERA is down to 4.16, and his WHIP stands at 1.22. The pitch mix stuff in the second half:
The changeup has been a difference-maker for him. He’s one of these lefties that doesn’t have velo or great raw stuff, but a changeup that can send him to the moon. A .181 xwOBA on that pitch with a 58% GB%.
And then he has the three fastball variations. This kind of approach can work, but your command has to be really good. So when Cameron is hitting the spots in the zone, he’s very tough. And he’s been a league-changing guy if someone was bold enough to start him beginning in mid-July.
Number two on the day in SwStr% was Christian Scott, who pitched into the seventh inning for the first time this year.
→ 6.33IP 5H 3ER 3R 7K 2BB
He still found a way to give up some runs. We’ve talked about Scott here pretty much every start over the last month. And that’s because he’s looked really, really good in the underlying data without getting great results in the box score. Those are always important buy-low spots, and that came through last night against the Nationals.
For the season, Scott has a 19% K-BB% with a 13.2% SwStr%, 35.1% Ball%, and only eight homers surrendered in 18 starts. His JA SIERA is 2.99 now. That is really, really good. By that mark, he’s a top 30 SP in the league. It’s not materializing, and maybe there’s some reason for that, but I’m buying and holding Scott, and he looks like a guy who will be a really nice sleeper pick for next year and beyond.
He gave up 1.5 HR/9 with just a 20% K% in his first season back in 2024, but he has made some key adjustments this year, and again, he looks legit.
Tarik Skubal - 6.0IP 7H 1ER 2R 7K 2BB
109 pitches for Skubal to get through six innings. Just normal Skubal stuff. 16.5% SwStr%, 29.4% Ball%, fastball velo at 97. That was the best start of his short Dodgers career. He still hasn’t flashed the massive strikeout total in his last four starts. He has just 25 starts in those four. So it’s not the most dominant version of Skubal, but nothing under the hood looks much different.
Sean Burke - 4.33IP 5H 4ER 4R 2K 3BB
Not great for Burke, and it was his second time in the last three failing to get through the fifth inning. He did have the brilliant starts against the Reds to start his two-start week, but this was pretty underwhelming.
I suppose there’s no reason to panic on him. But when you have a pitcher like this who comes out of nowhere and dominates for a couple of months, you’re going to be skeptical about that maintaining.
We saw it with his teammate Davis Martin who looked dominant for the first two months, but then went right back his normal career numbers where he’s a bad pitcher.
Will that happen with Burke? The pitch mix could give us some clues:
We want Strike% on four-seamers, and he has that at 53%. That’s really good. The 40% FB% is bothersome, but his fly balls haven’t been hit at the optimal angles, and we can see that coming with the .265 xwOBA.
There’s no other super dominant pitcher in the bag. The slider has been very good, but the curveball and sinker look pretty bad. I’m pretty hesitant. Burke is a guy I’d be fading outright if he ends up being a top 40 SP next year. But for this year, you’re just riding it out and hoping this stuff is for real.
2.94 JA SIERA this year; that’s excellent. The JA ERA, which uses SwStr% and Ball%, is much higher at 3.83.
I’m not giving you much great advice on him. If we could still trade in fantasy leagues, I’d call him a sell.
Patrick Sandoval - 4.0IP 9H 7ER 7R 6K 3BB
I recommended him for this start against the Pirates, and they crushed him. Nine hits, seven runs. Sandoval does not have a good fastball, and that’s going to limit him big time. I don’t think we need to bother with Sandoval in fantasy leagues, he just doesn’t have the stuff to get through lineups three times, I don’t think.
Lake Bachar - 3.0IP 2H 0ER 0R 4K 1BB
Just a quick note for deep leagues. The Pirates could be thinking about turning Bachar (trade deadline acquisition) into a starter. He threw 52 pitches. It was a weird circumstance where Skenes got pushed back and they needed length from somebody. But still, 53 pitches is a lot, and he got the job done against a tough Red Sox lineup.
He’s thrown three innings in each of his last two. My guess is that’s where he stays, but we’ll see if we hear any rumblings of him being converted for next year.
Eury Perez - 6.0IP 2H 0ER 0R 5K 5BB
Ugly 5:5 K:BB, but the Reds couldn’t hit him and he cruised through six innings of scoreless ball. The Eurinator now has a 1.80 ERA in his last ten starts.
17.5% K-BB% isn’t elite, but the 0.3 HR/9 after ramping up the sinker really helps. I mean that really, really helps. If you have a pitcher with 25%+ K% and elite home run suppression, you have a good pitcher.
He’s #2 in the league in HR/9 since June 15th (10 GS minimum)
Pallante 0.15
Perez 0.3
Bradish 0.3
Baz 0.31
Chandler 0.34
Urena 0.34
Weathers 0.45
Melton 0.46
Luzardo 0.50
Leahy 0.51
The 6% HR/FB has helped Eury. The 47% GB% is way higher than usual for him, so that’s a good sign that he won’t give up a bunch of homers any more with the sinker. But he’s not a 0.3 HR/9 guy, I don’t think anybody is.
But all things considered the sinker was huge for Eury and he’s been an ace since that development occurred. I think he’ll be an SP1 option for next year provided that he finishes this year healthy. And we’ll see plenty of him the rest of the way home as the Marlins are in the playoff race, somehow.
Ryan Weathers is another guy who changed the pitch mix this summer and has refused to give up homers since. Very similar to Eury.
→ 7.33IP 6H 1ER 1R 4K 1BB
His last five starts: 0.85 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 13.4% K-BB%, 0.28 HR/9
K% has come down to 21%, but it’s with the trade of not giving up homers, so you’ll take it.
Most guys have to pick a lane. Either get strikeouts with four-seamers and sliders and risk homers, or give up some strikeouts for ground balls. I think Weathers made the right choice.
And the Yankees have a juiced up rotation. If they could get Judge and Bellinger back for the playoffs, they’d be a real contender with Schlittler, Cole, Fried, and Weathers available to start all of their October games.
Andrew Painter - 5.0IP 6H 5ER 5R 2K 3BB
Gave up a grand slam in the first inning to dump a bucket of cold water on his resurgence since coming back from AAA. But after that he was fine. Just 2:3 K:BB… not good at all. I guess we should just wait and see with Painter. Let’s see how this pitch mix works for the rest of the year and re-evaluate him for next year.
Hunter Brown - 5.0IP 3H 2ER 2R 5K 5BB
BB% is up to 13.7% now. That’s a huge problem for Brown. His 11% K-BB% is scary. Not what we thought. Maybe he’s just not fully healthy.
There are only four pitchers in the league with 10+ GS and a walk rate above 13%.
Imai 14.6%
Brown 13.7%
Avila 13.6%
Arrighetti 13.0%
And three of those guys are (or were) Astros. So the Astros have some command issues, needless to say.
Brown’s a tough one to roster right now. But you’re not going to cut him, right?
But if I was looking at him in a vacuum with no prior biases from the last couple of years, he does not look like a good pitcher at all. The 55% GB% he has helps out. He’s given up just a .304 xwOBA and nine homers. But he has to figure out how to throw some strikes. You can’t have success with this kind of walk problem, so that needs to get fixed before we can feel good about him again.
Dylan Cease - 6.33IP 2H 2ER 2R 10K 3BB
Ten more strikeouts for Cease. He joins Misiorowski in the 200-strikeout club. Here’s the top of that leaderboard:
Williams, Schlittler, Luzardo, and Sanchez will definitely get there pretty soon. And probably a bunch of other dudes too, since a healthy starter would make 6-7 more starts with around 35-40 games left to play for each team.
Cody Bradford - 4.0IP 8H 2ER 2R 4K 1BB
Not what we wanted in that good matchup with the Athletics. He’s a pitch-to-contact guy, so this will happen.
Bradford has a 15% K% and 10.6% SwStr% with a 34% GB% in his three outings this year. So I don’t think he’s a fantasy league guy. But it was interesting enough to take a shot on this week against the Angels and Athletics.
He does get the Angels for his next start, so you could hold onto him for one more - there’s always a high chance of him getting deep into the games with how many strikes he throws. But he’s a killer on your team’s strikeout total.
Edward Cabrera - 3.67IP 6H 7ER 7R 2K 3BB
First start since June 23rd, and it was not a happy return. Cabrera has a 10.6% K-BB% this year with a big home run issue (1.8 HR/9). He should be better than that moving forward, but has he ever had like a good run of even five starts without a really bad start or two mixed in? The K% has fallen more than five points this year from last year, and this is his worst HR/9 since 2021.
Bryan Woo - 6.0IP 3H 2ER 2R 5K 1BB
A successful week from Woo with two road starts. They called it quits early with him, though. He had thrown only 75 pitches before the hook. You’ll take it for sure. Now the Mariners get to go back home where we can start these guys confidently again.
I don’t see any other pitchers really worth getting into from yesterday. Pretty much everyone else did about what we’d expect them to.
I guess I could point out that Nick Lodolo sucked again with a 2:2 K:BB on just six whiffs on73 pitches. Five scoreless innings, so I guess he didn’t suck at all in real life, but he just doesn’t seem to have the stuff or the command this year.
The Cardinals have the top two guys here. Jordan Walker homered, drove in four, and scored 32 fantasy points. And Alec Burleson continued his great season with four RBIs of his own.
Rafael Devers hit a homer on a ridiculous pitch to homer on. He has 19 bombs since June, and look at that, his season has turned out to be okay.
The .800 OPS is his worse mark by far of these last six seasons. That’s down 51 points from last year, but a .246 AVG isn’t horrible in today’s environment and he’s on his way to another 30-homer season. That will be an impressive stat in a full season with the Giants.
He will probably be just the third Giant not named Kent or Bonds to clear 30+ homers this century. Here’s everybody with 27+
Shout out to Rich Aurilia, I guess. Devers has six weeks to hit four homers and get into that elusive club. I think he’ll do it.
Alec Bohm has seven hits in his last two games with four runs, a homer, and five RBI. He’s hitting .242/.300/.384 this year with 14 bombs and two steals. Not a good fantasy player and his first time under a .700 OPS going back to 2022, but he did his part this weekend.
Crazy game for the Rockies, scoring 13 runs in AT&T Park.
Dare I say they have a decent offensive core right now? Carrigg has been good, Veen has surged onto the scene, Moniak has been great, and they have that Hunter Goodman guy on days that aren’t Sundays.
We could end up being very interested in a handful of Rockies bats for next year. And I’d say you definitely want to avoid all starters against them in Coors.
Jackson Holliday scored 20 points and deserves a look.
He has a career best .729 OPS now with six homers in 72 games plus six steals. That’s not a great HR/SB pace, but he’s not even 23 yet and might be seeing it a lot better this year. Since July began, he’s slashing .287/.488/.380. Just one homer in there, but a 20% K% and 16% BB% show that the plate discipline is coming around. He could even be considered a dynasty buy target. Don’t forget he was the top prospect in baseball not long ago, and sometimes you just have to be very, very patient with these guys.
Kinda funny that Joshua Baez went 0/5 with three strikeouts in his second game. So three bombs in his first, zero hits and three K in his second.
That’s a pretty good picture of who the guy will be, I think. He’ll have massive games, weeks, and months. But it’s an all-or-nothing approach, so sometimes you get the nothing.

If you want a Monday streamer with some upside, I’ll give you Quinn Mathews, who has been called up for the first game of this doubleheader. He had a decent start after his call-up, but got sent back down afterward. Maybe this is just a doubleheader thing, and he’ll go back down, but the projection loves him. If he has command (a big if), he’ll do well against this weak Reds lineup in game one.
Two big pieces of contact dropped the last two days, in case you missed it. Doc’s Dynasty Hour returned as Tim and Doc talked dynasty stuff for an hour:
