Check out yesterday’s box scores here
Lady and gentlemen, Cal Raleigh has homered three times. Raleigh now has a 1.786 OPS… in his last four games. Is he back? Will he hit ten bombs in the final five weeks and give everybody a reason to believe for next year? Time will tell.
How many people in standard redraft leagues benefited from this? CBS data tells me that he’s 95% owned and 73% started. So I guess a lot. There are lot of dead leagues in that, but I suppose it would be fair to say that Raleigh is still being started in more than half of leagues, even the smaller redraft ones.
And suddenly he has 17 homers. A 4.2% HR%, which isn’t all that bad. But he’s hitting .167 with a .282 OBP and just 51 RBI after driving in 124 last year in that unrepeatable season.
My thoughts before this week were that Raleigh would be a catcher target next year. It’s a buy low, sell high game, especially at the catcher position. But if he goes off and ends up around 25 bombs, he’ll probably be a top ten catcher pick again next year.
Check his six year stats table:
This season could end up being in the same area code as 2024 when hit .220 with 34 homers. That’s a stretch to say, but the point is that prior to last year he was viewed as a low average catcher who could at least hit you a bunch of homers. And he’ll probably get back to that next year. He’ll be 30, and he’s played a whole lot of catcher in his days, so the aging curve is never too friendly to these guys, but I guess it’s nice for some of you who have been taking your lumps from him all year to get something here at the end of the season. That assumes your team isn’t already cooked, which it probably is, but there you go!
The other candidate for player of the day was Daylen Lile. He had some steam in drafts this year after a nice rookie debut, but he really sucked for the first couple of months. But he has eight homers and six steals since July and has a pretty decent season line now:
→ .246/.294/.411, 16 HR, 13 SB
In a 15-team league, anybody going 15-15 with a .240+ batting average is valuable, and he’s hitting plenty of the long balls recently. Since July 30th, he has five homers (19.2 PA/HR) and a .250 average with three steals.
Zebby Matthews - 7.0IP 6H 1ER 1R 7K 1BB
He goes into the lion’s den and delivers a banger start. The problem is that there aren’t many lions in the den. It’s like a cubs den, but the cubs with a lowercase “c”, not the actual Chicago Cubs who are good.
The Athletics scored five runs in the 8th-9th to make their game look pretty good. Six runs on 12 hits. But they didn’t do any of that against the Zebbster.
The top three are pretty solid. Nothing great, but Bolte is very talented, Gelof has had a nice season, McNeil is very hot right now, and Butler… I don’t know, mixed bag from him.
The bottom five are a disaster for them though. This is just a lesson that you don’t have to be super afraid to start pitchers in Sacramento with all of the injuries they’ve had.
Is Zebby kinda good again? Or was this just a good start in isolation?
By month:
Still pretty much sucks in every month. Not interested in him even after this one.
Cade Cavalli - 6.0IP 5H 2ER 2R 7K 1BB
Cavalli has been crushing and he continued the role last night against the Rockies (in DC). This guy has nine straight quality starts. Since July 12th:
Extremely good pitcher. He tinkered with his stuff and the pitch mix in the middle of the season, and it’s paid off BIGLY.
He was on my “Perfect Draft” post and the “My Guys” list. I hesitate to do this, but let’s look at “My Guys” for starting pitcher this year:
Starting Pitchers: Tarik Skubal, Hunter Greene, George Kirby, Dylan Cease, Eury Perez, Chase Burns, Emmet Sheehan, Jacob Misiorowski, Ryan Pepiot, Trevor Rogers, Drew Rasmussen, Shota Imanaga, MacKenzie Gore, Shane Smith, Connelly Early, Braxton Ashcraft, Mike Burrows, Reid Detmers, Cade Cavalli, Simeon Woods Richardson, Mick Abel
A mixed bag. Cease, Eury, Burns, Misiorowski, Rogers, Ashcraft, Detmers, and Cavalli were big hits. But there were some mega turbo landmines in there. How do you even evaluate this?
If you’re me, and you give a list of 15 pitchers, it’s inevitable that a significant portion of them will not work out. And you’ll also inevitably get a lot of them right. A random number generator could do something similar to this. Just name a bunch of players, ignore the misses, brag about the hits. Anybody can do this stuff! So let’s just call it a loser. I suck, we’ll try to do better next year.
That full post is here.
Zack Wheeler - 4.0IP 9H 8ER 8R 4K 5BB
Is he busted?
Zack Wheeler
First 23 GS: 3.02 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 24.9% K-BB%
Last 4 GS: 8.38 ERA, 2.02 WHIP, 7.3% K-BB%
He’s given up 18 runs with a 22:15 K:BB in his last four starts. Pretty disastrous stuff.
Maybe the ribs he still has are just now suffering from pitching all of these innings without their old friend now. Maybe he’s breaking down as a 36 year old guy coming back from a major surgery.
I don’t know stuff, guys. Nobody knows stuff. Nothing ever happens. Very few things in life matter. Best I can do is look at some meaningful numbers and try to interpret the right meaning. Here’s the mix from these last four trainwrecks:
Fastball is still seemingly fine, it’s just gotten crushed on contact. So that’s not fine. But what is fine is the 55% Strike% and 12.3% SwStr%.
The splitter was a great pitch for him leading up to August, and that has disappeared here with a 38% Strike% and .422 xwOBA. The SwStr% on that pitch was near 25% prior to this run of things.
Is he tipping? Is it command? Has he lost some nastiness? The Stuff+ hasn’t really moved (this doesn’t have last night’s number yet):
So that’s consolation, but Stuff+ doesn’t really correlate super well with actual results, so it’s not the most feel good consolation.
This will be a post of me admitting that I just don’t know stuff. I don’t know what’s wrong with Wheeler. It could be just four random bad dice rolls in a row.
Like if a pitcher is going to be good in 5/6 starts and you’re rolling that six-sided die every time, sometimes you’ll roll four sixes in a row. Not everything has an explanation; not everything that looks real is real. You can’t trade the guy, you probably can’t bench the guy. Maybe you can, that’s up to you. But we’re guessing. But if we were drafting RIGHT NOW for the rest of the season, Wheeler would probably be off of my list. The list he was never on cause I hated him this year coming back from that surgery. And that was super wrong for 3+ months, but now it’s right.
Chase Burns - 3.67IP 9H 5ER 5R 5K 1BB
Was not a good night to be a right handed, very talented, pitcher wearing a logo with red in it. Burns got hit around by the Giants of all teams, and they don’t even have Willy Adames right now.
So this was pretty shocking. The heater was buns. Big time rotten buns.
Just a 3.4% SwStr% and hitters plastered it. They toasted those buns. Burned them to a crisp.
We saw his fastball suck for a few weeks earlier this summer. He went through a rough spell in early July, and then he bounced back and dominated again.
So I wouldn’t change any opinions about Burns. But the consistently hasn’t been what you’d think it’s been, given his 2.77 ERA and 1.15 WHIP this year. He’s had a lot of starts where he was kinda lucky to do as well as he did.
His command isn’t all that great with a 91 Location+, an 8.5% BB%, and a 37% Ball%. So when the fastball isn’t fastballing, it can go pretty poorly.
I guess this one’s pretty simple to interpret. Burns throws 56% fastballs, 39% sliders, and 5% changeups. That’s a two-pitch mix. So when the fastball sucks, that’s more than half of his pitches sucking.
The man needs a sinker or to fix up that changeup so he can throw it more often. Something. But we’re being harsh, he’s been a stud pitcher this year and even stud pitchers have bad starts.
Braxton Ashcraft - 6.0IP 4H 1ER 1R 2K 1BB
Only two strikeouts and six innings? But a quality start with a good WHIP result in San Diego. Not a surprise that he didn’t give up a homer in this one. He has a 1.22 HR/9 this year, which I think is bloated. He throws sinkers, curveballs, and high-velo sliders. He doesn’t seem like a guy who should give up many homers, but a 20% HR/FB has hurt him.
Most important for Ashcraft this year is that he’s through 155 innings and is still pitching well. He threw 70 MLB innings last year (48 more in the minors). He should get past 170 innings, which is a big win for him, and that will be among the league leaders if they let him finish what he started here.
Maybe they won’t let him finish what they started, because the Pirates are (sadly) out of the playoff race. And Ashcraft might be their best pitcher. He certainly has been their best pitcher this year. So they could pack it in early with him.
They’ve done that with Skenes. Limited him to just a few innings in the final couple of weeks. Fair to be worried about that if you this dude’s one of your aces and you need him in late September.
Parker Messick - 6.0IP 3H 1ER 1R 4K 1BB
Dream spot for Messick. Delivered a quality start and his 10th win. But we thought he’d strike out a lot more than four Angels. You can’t get everything you want, and we’ll take it.
He now has seven starts with fewer than five strikeouts. But he’s still been good in those starts. He’s an excellent pitcher, strikeouts are almost a luxury good for someone with this kind of pitch mix and command.
Sandy Alcantara - 7.0IP 6H 1ER 1R 6K 2BB
Seven more innings for Alcantara against the Red Sox. He furthered his league lead in innings.
Sandy: 183.2
Sanchez: 168.1
Wacha: 162.2
Schlitter: 158
Great season for Sandy as a 30 year old. He’ll turn 31 in two weeks. Plenty of gas left in the tank for the big righty, and he’s fully back to his workhorse ways.
He’s going to sail past 200 innings, and he might be the only one to get there.
George Klassen - 5.33IP 6H 2ER 3R 3K 3BB
Not great for Klassen, but he survived in the ER column. Just eight whiffs, 40% Strike%, three walks. That’s all bad news. It was a tough spot for him against a high-contact Guardians team that loaded up lefties. And the weather was unfavorable as well.
He’s not going to be consistent, his fastball kinda blows for now. I’d still stream him sometimes and I think he’ll usually get some strikeouts, but this wasn’t the good version of him.
Kevin Gausman - 7.0IP 3H 0ER 0R 6K 1BB
Finally a dominant Gausman start for the Cubs.
It’s been a bad year for Gausdaddy. 4.43 ERA, 1.26 WHIP. But a 17% K-BB% and 1.08 HR/9. Still getting whiffs (13.5% SwStr%) and throwing strikes (34.5% Ball%), but he just hasn’t put together one of those runs he usually does where he’s one of the best in the game. He’s 35; that’s old. He was born just 2.5 months after cha boy.
He’s having a high BABIP year. He was at .280 in 2024, .260 in 2025, and now .314 this year. He’s also given up the higher HR/9 since pre-2021 when the world didn’t even exist.
Do you hold for now? Probably. Do you buy next year? Maybe, depends on the price! The Cubs, in theory, are a good team to be on for his style. But he’s a free agent after this year so we’ll have to see who he plays for to make our final decisions.
Framber Valdez - 6.0IP 8H 3ER 4R 0K 2BB
Another zero-K qualbanger. The eighth of the season!
That’s exactly as many as there were last year. And the same as 2024! It seems like we get exactly eight zero-K qualdaddies a year. So we’re done for the year, it won’t happen again, I promise.
This is a bust season for Framber in year one of a big contract. Career low 17.4% K% (by career I mean since 2021 because the world didn’t exist before 2021 as we’ve already said). A career-high 4.35 ERA, a career-high 1.40 WHIP.
Not what you want at all for a fantasy league of any shape and size.
He’s only 32, but that’s still disgustingly old for a guy that doesn’t throw hard. Either throw hard or be like 26; what are we doing?
Logan Gilbert - 5.0IP 5H 2ER 2R 5K 2BB
Not a very notable start. Not a very notable pitcher in that he’s just very good and he’s obviously owned and started everywhere, so we don’t really need to evaluate him. But look:
Logan Gilbert’s FF velo (50 pitches) UP 1.6mph to 97.5
Big velo from Logey Gilbey. He’s been throwing harder lately, a good sign that he’s healthy and ready to finish the season unlike the rest of his teammates have been able to do.
Overall it was a pretty muted day for pitchers. Just a 19% K% as a group.
More hitters… Jake Burger hit a dinger as a part of an 11-run outburst for the Rangers. They got to see Jose Urquidy and the very bad version of the White Sox bullpen since they were getting beat bad from the jump.
Burger has 22 homers now and 75 RBI. Pretty good season given what he cost this year.
Corey Seager and Wyatt Langford had nice games as well. So this Rangers lineup is together again and seemingly very healthy.
Seager is hitting .355/.424/.553 since getting back from the IL again. Three homers in 85 PAs, 16.5% K%, 9.3% BB%. All is right with him. But this season has been one of the worst for him. Just a .755 OPS in 72 games. He can probably push that to an .800 OPS since his PA denominator is pretty low. Can he stay healthy for another month? Fair to think he can’t. But you’re getting some fruit from Seager.
Langford is hitting .253/.321/.462 this year with 15 homers and ten steals in 80 games. That’s a 30-20 pace with a .782 OPS. Not the MVP candidate we thought he could be, but a very good return nonetheless.
He went 22-22 last year. So with a fully healthy year, if that can ever happen, he might end up with a few 30-30 seasons. He’s still a very good fantasy option when the muscles aren’t exploding.
The Twins came through in Sacramento. Nine runs, 16 hits. But only one homer, and it was from Ryan Kreidler of all people! That’s not how we thought it would go, but it went.
Kaelen Culpepper was feeling back at home in a minor league park. Minor league player in a minor league park! Ahhh hah!! Shots fired at the Culpepper truthers.
He’s halfway to the 100 PA threshold that we’re always waiting for with top prospect hitters. It hasn’t been good, but it hasn’t been a total disaster either.
This is how little I care about batting average, I guess. I just said “it hasn’t been good”, and yet he’s hitting .340/.382/.480. So I take that back.
One way to take something back when you’re writing is to just go back and backspace the wrong thing you said. But I prefer this to just be an open spicket of my dumb theories and make corrections post-hoc.
I even spelled “spigot” wrong. I legitimately thought it was “spicket”. Learn something new every day. I just call it a faucet.
A spigot is an outdoor, single-temperature water valve typically used for hoses, while a faucet is an indoor, decorative fixture over a sink that usually mixes hot and cold water.
So it’s a faucet if it’s inside and has multiple temperature options. Do you want the etymology of the word “faucet”? Because I did.
So it meant the same as spigot for awhile but now we’ve changed it. And that’s good. Being more specific in your words is better than less.
Spigot is a better word in the way I used it. It’s less controlled, free-flowing, out of control. And now I even know how to spell it.
Have a good Tuesday, idiots!
